Chapter 8 - The Cost of War

By four in the morning, the police cruisers had cleared from the long gravel drive, taking Isabella Rossi away in handcuffs, charged with attempted murder, aggravated burglary, and domestic assault.

The Rossi estate had been raided simultaneously by federal regulators—Luca’s financial strikes had uncovered decades of illegal money laundering through Vincent Rossi’s shipping docks, effectively ending the Rossi dynasty in a single night.

The storm outside had finally passed, leaving behind a crisp, starry sky over the estate grounds.

I sat on the edge of the large leather sofa in Luca’s private study, wrapped in a thick wool blanket Mrs. Gable had brought me. A fresh bandage had been applied to a minor scrape on my temple where plaster dust had cut my skin, but miraculously, the splint on my right hand had survived the ordeal intact.

Across the room, Luca stood by the tall arched windows, staring out into the quiet gardens. He was holding a glass of amber scotch, though he hadn't taken a single sip.

“Sofia is asleep,” I said softly, breaking the long silence. “Dr. Miller gave her a mild sedative. He said she won't remember the worst of it.”

Luca didn't turn around immediately. “She shouldn't have been in that hallway, Emma. Isabella bribed one of the exterior gate contractors to disable the sector four perimeter sensors. She slipped through the woods while Vincent’s men created a diversion at the south entrance.”

He turned around slowly, setting his untouched glass on the heavy mahogany desk. In the warm lamplight of the study, he looked entirely hollowed out by guilt.

“I brought that monster into this house,” Luca whispered, his voice rough and raw. “I invited her into my daughter’s life. I let her walk past my doors, and tonight, she nearly killed you both. If Marco had been one second slower…”

He couldn't finish the sentence. He bowed his head, his broad shoulders tensing as he clenched his fists against the edge of the desk.

I stood up from the sofa, letting the wool blanket slip to the floor. Ignoring the dull ache in my side, I crossed the Persian rug until I stood directly in front of him.

“Look at me, Luca,” I said softly.

He lifted his head reluctantly, his dark eyes brimming with an agony that shattered my heart. The cold, untouchable king of the city was bleeding inside, tearing himself apart for failing to foresee madness.

I reached out with my left hand, gently resting my palm against the rough stubble of his jaw.

His breath hitched at the contact. He didn't pull away. Instead, he leaned into my touch, closing his eyes for a brief, agonizing moment, letting out a ragged sigh that felt like the release of years of unbearable pressure.

“You saved us,” I whispered, stepping closer until my chest brushed his. “You gave Sofia a father who would tear down the world to protect her. And you gave me… you gave me a home when I had nothing.”

Luca opened his eyes, staring down into mine with an intensity that stole the air from my lungs. His hands reached out, moving with deliberate slowness, gently resting on my hips, pulling me firmly against his body.

“You are not a servant here, Emma,” Luca murmured, his voice thick with unmasked passion. “You never were. From the moment I saw you holding Sofia in the kitchen three months ago, I knew. I fought it. I told myself I had duties, alliances, contracts. But tonight, when Isabella pointed that gun at you…”

His hands slid up to my waist, his thumbs pressing into the curve of my ribs, lifting me slightly until we were breathing the same air.

“I realized that if I lost you, I would burn this entire city to the ground,” he whispered.

My heart hammered wildly against my ribs. “Luca… we can’t. The press will tear you apart. They’ll say you destroyed the Rossi family for an affair with your maid. Your board will revolt.”

“Let them talk,” Luca said fiercely, his face dipping lower, his lips hovering mere millimeters above mine. “Let the board scream. I have spent my entire life building an empire of stone and iron, Emma. But without you and Sofia, it is just an empty cage.”

He didn't wait for my reply. He closed the remaining distance between us, capturing my lips in a deep, devastating kiss that erased every shred of doubt, fear, and hesitation I had ever carried.

His mouth was warm, hungry, and demanding, yet his touch remained fiercely protective, mindful of my injured hand cradled against his chest. I wound my left arm around his neck, burying my fingers in his thick dark hair, pulling him closer as the world outside ceased to exist.

There were no boardrooms. There were no social registers. There was only Luca, holding me in the quiet dark of his study, sealing an unspoken promise with the heat of his skin.
