Chapter 15 - THE NEW BEGINNING

|

Six months later, on a breathtaking Saturday in June, the Moretti estate was alive with music, flowers, and pure joy.

The grand lakeside terrace had been transformed into an open-air cathedral overlooking the azure waters of Lake Michigan.

Thousands of white gardenias, pink peonies, and blue hydrangeas cascaded over the marble balustrades.

Over four hundred guests were seated on white silk chairs beneath the clear, cloudless summer sky.

There were no bodyguards with drawn weapons visible today.

There was no tension, no fear, and no shadows of past wars.

At the front of the altar stood Luca Moretti.

He wore an impeccably tailored black tuxedo with a white rose in his lapel, his dark hair swept back, looking like a king.

Standing beside him as his best man was Marco, smiling proudly.

Sitting in the front row was my mother, Clara, weeping tears of pure joy into a lace handkerchief, walking completely unassisted without her cane.

Beside her sat Caroline, looking radiant and healthy in a pale-lavender silk dress, holding a program with pride.

The wedding march began, played by a full thirty-piece symphony orchestra.

Down the white carpeted aisle walked Lily Moretti, serving as the maid of honor.

Her brown hair had grown past her shoulders, thick, healthy, and styled into a gorgeous, intricate crown of braids tied with baby-blue ribbons.

She carried a basket of white rose petals, grinning from ear to ear as she tossed them toward the smiling guests.

And then, the entire assembly rose to their feet.

I stepped onto the terrace aisle, holding a bouquet of wild lavender and white roses.

I wore a custom-designed ivory lace gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline and a cathedral train that floated like a cloud behind me.

The sapphire ring on my finger sparkled brilliantly in the midday sun.

When Luca looked down the aisle and saw me, a tear slipped unashamedly down his rugged, handsome cheek.

He didn't wait for me to reach the altar.

Luca walked three paces down the steps to meet me halfway, taking both of my hands into his with an awe so profound it silenced the entire crowd.

“You are my miracle, Emma,” Luca whispered, his voice trembling with deep devotion.

“And you are my home, Luca,” I replied softly.

We walked together to the altar, standing hand in hand before the minister.

The vows were simple, honest, and spoken from the depths of our souls.

Promises of loyalty, protection, and unconditional love through every storm life could ever bring.

When the minister pronounced us husband and wife, Luca pulled me into his arms and kissed me with a passion so fierce and tender that thunderous applause erupted across the lake.

Lily bounded forward, throwing her arms around both of us, laughing with pure, radiant joy.

“We did it, Miss Emma!” Lily cheered, her eyes shining like stars.

“Now you’re really my family!”

Luca leaned down, scooping Lily up into his arms while keeping his other arm wrapped securely around my waist.

“She was always our family, baby,” Luca said, pressing a kiss to Lily’s cheek and then to my lips.

We turned to face the cheering crowd as the bells of the estate chimed in triumphant harmony across the city of Chicago.

I looked out over the sea of smiling faces, at my mother laughing, at Caroline applauding, and down at the little girl resting safely in her father’s arms.

Thirteen months ago, I was a frightened housemaid pulling a discarded braid out of a trash can beside an engagement table.

Today, I stood as the beloved Donna of the Moretti empire, surrounded by the people I had fought to protect.

The waiting was over.

The wounds were healed.

And our story had finally found its forever home.
