Chapter 9 - Under Siege

The sub-basement was built like a military bunker.
Hidden behind a false bookshelf in the wine cellar, the steel-reinforced room contained emergency communications, medical supplies, and monitors displaying feeds from every security camera on the property.
Mrs. Gable sat in the corner with Sofia, rocking the little girl back and forth while singing soft lullabies until exhaustion finally claimed the child. Sofia fell asleep on a cot, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
I couldn't sit down.
Every nerve in my body was on fire. I stood in front of the bank of security monitors, watching the nightmare unfold in real time on silent, glowing screens.
On Monitor 3, I saw three black SUVs breaching the secondary service gate near the stables. Men dressed in tactical gear and carrying automatic weapons poured into the courtyard.
On Monitor 1, I saw Luca.
He had stripped off his tuxedo jacket, wearing only his dark trousers and a black tactical vest. He moved through the shadows of the estate with lethal, terrifying grace. Beside him were six of his elite guards, cutting down the intruders with cold, coordinated precision.
It wasn't a battle. It was an execution.
Luca fought like a man possessed, his movements practiced and devoid of hesitation. Every time an armed intruder attempted to breach a side door, Luca was already there, waiting in the blind spots, neutralizing the threat before they could even raise their weapons.
For forty-five minutes, the screens flickered with muzzle flashes and falling bodies.
And then, the feeds on Monitors 2, 4, and 5 suddenly went black.
Static hissed through the display screens.
“What happened?” Mrs. Gable whispered, her eyes wide with terror from the corner of the room. “Why did the lights go out?”
“The power lines to the east wing were severed,” I said, my heart sinking.
A heavy, metallic thud echoed from the ceiling above us.
Footsteps. Heavy, hurried boots moving through the wine cellar directly overhead.
My breath stopped.
Luca was supposed to be clearing the courtyard. If there were footsteps above the bunker, it meant someone had bypassed the main security detail and slipped into the mansion’s lower levels.
I turned toward the heavy steel door of the panic room. The digital lock was glowing green.
*Clank.*
The sound of the outer vault handle turning sent a jolt of ice through my veins.
“Mrs. Gable,” I whispered, my voice trembling with urgency. “Take Sofia into the back storage closet. Lock it from the inside and do not open it for anyone except Luca. Do you hear me?”
“Emma, what are you doing?” the elderly woman cried, gathering the sleeping girl in her arms.
“Go! Now!”
I grabbed an iron tire iron from the emergency tool kit resting near the workbench. My knuckles turned white around the cold metal.
The heavy steel door of the bunker slowly swung open with a hydraulic hiss.
I raised the tire iron, my muscles coiled, ready to strike whatever came through the frame.
A shadow fell across the threshold.
A tall figure stepped into the light, holding a bloody knife in one hand and a revolver in the other.
It wasn't a nameless mercenary.
It was Lorenzo Santoro.
His face was streaked with soot and blood, his expensive clothes shredded, his eyes wild with the manic insanity of a cornered predator.
“Look what we have here,” Lorenzo hissed, his lips curling into a deranged sneer as his gaze locked onto me. “The little maid in her secret hiding hole.”
“Stay back,” I warned, raising the iron higher, though my knees threatened to give out beneath me.
“Where’s the girl?” Lorenzo demanded, taking a heavy step forward, ignoring the weapon in my hands. “Where’s Moretti’s brat? If my family is going down tonight, I’m taking his legacy with me!”
He lunged.
Adrenaline took over. I swung the tire iron with everything I had. The heavy metal struck his forearm with a dull crack, knocking the revolver out of his grip. It skittered across the concrete floor, vanishing beneath a steel shelf.
Lorenzo roared in fury. He dropped the knife and seized me by the throat, his massive hands squeezing the air from my windpipe as he slammed me hard against the brick wall.
Pain—blinding, white-hot pain—exploded across my cracked ribs. I gasped, clawing at his fingers, my vision swimming with black spots.
“You ruined everything!” Lorenzo spat, his face inches from mine, spitting blood as he choked the life out of me. “You’re dying first, you little whore!”
My lungs burned. Darkness closed in at the edges of my sight.
And then, a loud, bone-shattering *CRACK* ripped through the bunker.
Lorenzo’s eyes widened in sudden, unfathomable shock. His grip went slack.
A dark red stain bloomed in the center of his chest. He slowly collapsed forward onto the concrete floor, revealing Luca standing in the doorway.
Luca was covered in dirt and gunpowder, his face bleeding from a cut above his eye, his smoking gun still leveled at Lorenzo’s lifeless body.
He dropped the weapon and crossed the room in two strides, catching me as my legs gave out.
“Emma,” he gasped, pulling me tightly against his chest, his hands trembling as he checked my neck, my face, my ribs. “Emma, look at me. Breathe. You’re safe. I’ve got you.”
I gasped for air, burying my face into the crook of his neck, sobbing uncontrollably as his strong arms wrapped around me, anchoring me to the earth.
“Sofia…” I choked out between ragged breaths.
May you like
“She’s safe,” Luca murmured against my hair, his voice breaking with an emotion I had never heard from him before. “You saved her. You saved us both.”
