Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Ambush

The corporate headquarters of Moretti Enterprises rose fifty-four stories above Manhattan’s financial district, a monolith of black steel and smoked glass overlooking the harbor.
At 9:45 AM, the executive boardroom on the top floor was filled to capacity.
All twelve members of the board of directors were seated around the massive circular mahogany table. At the far end sat Victor Sterling, looking smug and imposing in a charcoal pinstripe suit, his hands folded over a leather briefing folder. Beside him sat two of his top corporate litigators.
Julian Moretti sat two seats away, smirking openly, adjusting his silk tie as if he had already been crowned king.
Isabella was there too.
She had arrived under the pretext of being Victor Sterling’s corporate advisor, wearing an impeccably tailored cream blazer and matching skirt. Her face was a masterclass in performative grief—the wounded, betrayed fiancée who had come to witness justice.
“Where is Luca?” Victor Sterling demanded, glancing at his Rolex. “It’s ten minutes to ten. If he fails to appear, we vote on the morality clause in absentia.”
“I’m sure my cousin is having trouble finding lawyers willing to defend him,” Julian sneered, leaning back in his leather chair. “Assaulting Victor Sterling at a public gala, engaging in improper relations with the household help, and leaking classified harbor manifests… the man has clearly suffered a nervous breakdown since his father’s illness.”
The board members murmured uneasily among themselves. Several older men nodded in grave agreement.
At exactly 9:58 AM, the frosted glass doors of the boardroom swung open.
The room went dead silent.
Luca walked in.
He was dressed in a bespoke midnight-blue suit, his white shirt crisp, his posture radiating effortless, lethal dominance.
And he wasn't alone.
Walking beside him, her hand tucked securely into the crook of his arm, was me.
I wore an elegant charcoal sheath dress that Mrs. Bellini had personally selected for me that morning, my hair swept up in a neat chignon. My right hand was still splinted, but I didn't hide it beneath a wrap today. I let the white medical brace rest openly against the dark fabric of my dress.
Behind us walked Marco, carrying two heavy leather briefcases, flanked by two federal agents in dark suits with brass badges pinned to their lapels.
Gasps rippled around the circular table.
Isabella turned white as a sheet, her knuckles turning bone-white against the table.
Julian sat bolt upright, his smug smirk vanishing in an instant. “What is this? Luca, this is a closed executive session! You can't bring your… your mistress in here! And who are these men?”
Luca didn't look at Julian. He guided me to the head of the table, pulled out the high-backed leather chair designated for the chairman, and gently seated me in it.
Then, Luca remained standing, resting both hands on the back of my chair, looking down the length of the table at Victor Sterling and Julian.
“Good morning, gentlemen,” Luca said, his voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. “And Miss Sterling.”
Victor Sterling slammed his fist onto the table, standing up. “Moretti! You have crossed the line! Bringing the very woman you used to compromise this company into this boardroom is an insult to every shareholder here! We have the documents! We have proof that classified manifests were sent to her personal accounts!”
“Do you?” Luca asked, tilting his head slightly.
Marco stepped forward, placing a thick stack of blue-bound folders in front of each board member.
“What is this garbage?” Julian demanded, flipping open the first page.
His face drained of all color.
“Those,” Luca explained, his voice ringing with absolute authority, “are the server logs from the Southern District of New York’s cybercrimes division.”
The board members immediately began flipping through the pages, their eyes widening in shock.
“At 7:42 last night,” Luca continued, pacing slowly along the edge of the table, “an encrypted packet was routed from the Sterling Tower penthouse through Julian Moretti’s private executive gateway. Its destination was Emma Vance’s email address. The intent was clear: frame an innocent employee for corporate theft to manufacture a pretext for my removal under the trust’s morality clause.”
“Lies!” Isabella shrieked, jumping to her feet. “He’s making it up! He doctored those logs!”
“Agent Miller,” Luca said quietly.
One of the federal agents stepped forward, pulling a signed warrant from his breast pocket.
“Victor Sterling. Julian Moretti. Isabella Sterling,” the agent announced in a flat, clinical tone. “You are all named as primary targets in a grand jury indictment handed down forty-five minutes ago. The charges include federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit corporate espionage, and witness tampering.”
The boardroom erupted into chaos.
Board members were shouting, pushing their chairs back, pointing fingers.
Victor Sterling looked as if he were having a heart attack, his face turning a terrifying shade of purple as he rounded on his daughter. “What did you do? You told me you covered your tracks!”
“Dad, shut up!” Isabella cried, her polished composure completely disintegrating into hysterical panic. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at me. “It was her! She set us up! She’s just a maid! A worthless, pathetic little maid who seduced Luca!”
Luca stopped walking.
He stood directly behind Isabella’s chair.
When he spoke, his voice didn't rise above a conversational tone, but it cut through the screaming and shouting like a razor through silk.
“You broke her fingers, Isabella,” Luca said softly.
The entire room froze again.
Luca tapped a remote control on the console near the wall.
The massive high-definition presentation screens on both sides of the boardroom flickered to life.
The 4K security footage from the west corridor played in crystal-clear clarity.
The entire board of directors watched in horrified silence as Isabella slammed the heavy oak door onto my hand, watching her lean her entire body weight into the wood, watching her sneer down at me as I collapsed in agony.
Gasps of pure revulsion echoed through the room.
Two female board members covered their mouths in horror.
“My God…” an elderly director whispered, looking at Isabella with disgust. “She’s a monster.”
Isabella backed away from the table, shaking violently, her eyes darting between the glowing screens and the federal agents moving toward her.
“No… no, that's not what happened… she provoked me!” Isabella stammered, tears of humiliation and rage ruining her expensive makeup.
“Save it for the magistrate, Miss Sterling,” Agent Miller said, stepping up behind her and clicking a pair of steel handcuffs around her wrists.
“Don't touch me! Do you know who my father is?!” Isabella screamed as the agents gripped her arms.
“Victor Sterling is also under arrest, ma'am,” the second agent said, stepping over to Victor and Julian, who both stood frozen in utter defeat.
Within five minutes, the Sterlings and Julian Moretti were being escorted out of the executive suite in handcuffs, their curses and protests fading down the carpeted hallway until the heavy glass doors clicked shut.
Silence descended upon the boardroom.
The remaining directors looked at Luca, their faces pale, their respect for him elevated to absolute reverence.
Luca walked back to the head of the table. He stood beside my chair, placing a firm, reassuring hand on my shoulder.

“Gentlemen,” Luca said, his voice steady and calm. “Now that the distractions have been removed… let us discuss the harbor expansion.”
