Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Solarium

By mid-afternoon, the Moretti estate had transformed into a fortress.

Two dozen heavily armed private security guards in black tactical gear patrolled the perimeter walls. Black SUVs with tinted windows were parked along the sweeping gravel driveway. Inside, a professional cleaning crew worked tirelessly in the breakfast solarium, replacing the shattered glass doors and scrubbing every trace of blood from the pristine hardwood.

Luca had retreated to his study, surrounded by his top legal advisors and finance directors. The muffled sounds of sharp, decisive commands echoed through the heavy oak doors whenever a servant walked past.

Upstairs, I sat on the window seat of the nursery, watching Sofia color a picture of a sailboat on the low table.

She was remarkably resilient. Children often are, when they believe the adults around them are invincible. To her, Luca was a superhero who had vanquished the bad men. She didn't understand the complex web of mafia politics, corporate sabotage, and deadly vendettas that had just been unraveled.

A soft knock came at the door.

Mrs. Gable entered, carrying a silver tray with hot soup, fresh bread, and a small sealed envelope.

“How is she doing, Emma?” the older housekeeper asked gently, setting the tray on the table beside Sofia.

“She’s doing well,” I replied, standing up to stretch my stiff legs. “A little quiet, but she ate an apple earlier.”

Mrs. Gable nodded, her lined face heavy with exhaustion. “You did well today, child. Most girls would have run out the back door and left the little one behind.”

“I couldn’t do that,” I said honestly. “I would never leave her.”

Mrs. Gable smiled softly, reaching into her apron pocket and handing me the sealed envelope. “Mr. Moretti asked me to give this to you personally. He said you should read it before dinner.”

My stomach fluttered with nervous apprehension. “Thank you, Mrs. Gable.”

Once the housekeeper left, I sat back down on the window seat and slid my thumb beneath the gold wax seal bearing the Moretti family crest. Inside was a piece of heavy parchment, covered in Luca’s sharp, elegant handwriting.

*Emma,*

*The city will be loud tonight. News of Vincent Valenti’s arrest for attempted kidnapping and extortion will break on the evening news. The media will descend upon the harbor and the estate.*

*Isabella has fled the state. Her father’s empire is crumbling, and my men are acquiring the remaining shares of the southern terminals as we speak. We are safe, but the storm is far from over.*

*I need you to understand something. What I said this morning wasn't a temporary measure. You protected my world today. In return, I am giving you mine.*

*Join me for dinner at eight. In the formal dining room. Just the two of us.*

*— Luca*

My breath hitched.

*Just the two of us.* In the formal dining room, where less than twenty-four hours ago, I had been standing with a carving knife, bleeding under my uniform cuff while his fiancée humiliated me.

Now, the fiancée was a fugitive, the contracts were torn to shreds, and the master of the house was asking me to dine with him as an equal.

I looked down at the bandaged wrist resting in my lap. The bruise beneath the white gauze still ached, but the invisible chains that had held me captive in my old life—the poverty, the invisibility, the constant terror of powerful people—seemed to have snapped along with Isabella’s hold on this house.

Yet, a deep, gnawing dread lingered in the back of my mind.

Men like Vincent Valenti didn’t go down quietly. In this city, when a titan fell, the ripples tore through everything in their wake. And sitting at Luca Moretti’s right hand meant standing directly in the center of the blast radius.
