Chapter 11 - THE SHADOW OF REVENGE

|
The peace we had built over the winter was shattered on a gray Thursday in early April.
Spring had begun to thaw the icy borders of Lake Michigan, bringing blooming crocuses and warmer winds.
Sophie was thriving, her ballet slippers now gliding across the studio floor with effortless grace.
She was preparing for her solo in the Nutcracker Spring Gala, the very performance that would honor her mother’s memory.
I had just finished helping her pack her recital bag when Marco appeared at the studio door.
His expression was grim, his jaw set in a hard, rigid line that I hadn't seen since the night of the airstrip.
“Claire,” Marco said, keeping his voice carefully neutral so as not to alarm Sophie.
“The boss needs you in the executive office downstairs.”
I felt a cold knot tighten in my stomach.
“Is everything all right, Marco?”
“Just come down, please,” he replied.
I patted Sophie’s shoulder, telling her to practice her floor stretches, and followed Marco down the carpeted hallway.
Luca’s executive office on the ground floor was heavily guarded by two armed men at the door.
When I stepped inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Luca stood behind his massive mahogany desk, staring at a series of color photographs spread across the green blotter.
Beside him stood a tall, sharply dressed man with silver hair and a scarred temple.
“Luca?” I asked, stepping into the room.
Luca looked up, and the warmth that usually filled his eyes when he saw me was instantly replaced by an icy, protective fury.
“Claire, come here,” he said gently, extending his hand.
I walked over, placing my hand in his, and looked down at the desk.
The photographs showed the exterior of Sophie’s dance academy downtown.
In three of the images, a man in a gray mechanic’s jacket was standing near the stage door, holding a long telephoto camera.
In the last image, the man was handing a thick white envelope to a woman sitting inside an idling black sedan.
I recognized the woman’s profile instantly.
It was Elena Bellini, Vanessa’s estranged older sister who lived in Montreal.
“Elena arrived in Chicago two days ago,” Luca said, his voice flat and deadly.
“She hired a private mercenary cell out of Detroit.”
“Why?” I whispered, feeling the blood drain from my face.
“Vanessa and Antonio are locked away in federal prison for the rest of their lives!”
“Vanessa’s legal defense fund was drained,” the silver-haired man beside Luca explained.
Luca nodded toward him.
“Claire, this is Don Falcone, the head of the Allied Council.”
Falcone bowed his head respectfully toward me.
“Elena blames your testimony and Luca’s cooperation with the feds for the destruction of her family name,” Falcone said.
“She doesn't care about the money anymore.”
“She wants blood before the spring gala on Saturday.”
“She plans to strike at the theater,” Luca said, his grip on my hand tightening slightly.
“They know the Auditorium Theatre has strict municipal security that prevents us from carrying heavy firepower inside.”
“They intend to create a panic during the recital and take both Sophie and you as leverage.”
Panic surged through my chest, cold and suffocating.
“Then we cancel the recital,” I said immediately.
“Sophie’s safety comes first! We can keep her inside the estate!”
“No,” Luca said firmly, turning to face me completely.
“Sophie has worked four months for this day.”
“She has overcome broken bones, cruel lies, and the fear of being abandoned.”
“I will not allow the Bellini scum to steal another single second of my daughter’s joy.”
“Luca, they are mercenaries!” I pleaded, tears of fear springing to my eyes.
“If they attack a crowded theater, innocent people will die!”
Luca stepped closer, wrapping both of his arms around my waist, pulling me firmly against his broad chest.
He looked down into my eyes with an absolute, terrifying confidence that calmed the storm in my soul.
“They won't reach the theater, Claire,” Luca said softly.
“Don Falcone and I have already rewritten their plans.”
“Elena thinks she bought the stage door security guards.”
“Those guards work for me.”
“She thinks she has an escape route through the subway tunnel beneath Congress Parkway.”
“Marco’s teams have already welded the northern gates shut.”
Luca leaned down, pressing his forehead gently against mine.
“Trust me, my love.”

“On Saturday afternoon, Sophie will dance for her mother.”
“And the Bellini bloodline will finally be extinguished from this earth.”
