Chapter 13 - The Bride Who Tried to Steal a Family|

The private event complex stood beside the Chicago River.

Its entrance was decorated with white roses.

Crystal chandeliers glittered through the enormous windows.

And inside, Vanessa Bellini was preparing for a celebration that had nothing to do with love.

As Detective Ruiz's vehicle approached the building, I noticed a black limousine parked beneath the entrance canopy.

Two security guards stood beside the doors.

Luca recognized the vehicle immediately.

"That's Victor Bellini's car."

Detective Ruiz pulled into a parking area.

"Nobody goes inside until my colleagues confirm it's safe."

Luca looked toward the building.

For a moment, I saw the old anger return.

But he didn't argue.

Olivia sat beside me, studying the documents on her tablet.

Then she began signing rapidly.

I watched her carefully.

The authorization number is wrong.

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

She pointed toward the document Vanessa had photographed.

The supposed corporate authorization contained a reference number linked to the family foundation.

But Olivia recognized it.

It belonged to an earlier contract for art supplies.

"Are you certain?" Natalie asked.

Olivia nodded.

She opened her foundation records and located the original document.

The numbers matched.

Richard had apparently reused an existing reference to make the fraudulent authorization look legitimate.

Natalie stared at the screen.

"That's significant."

Olivia immediately typed a message.

Send the original contract to the title company.

Natalie did exactly that.

She attached the original records, evidence of the disputed signatures, and formal notice that the proposed sellers lacked authority to approve the transaction.

Then she called the closing attorney.

"This property is the subject of an active fraud investigation."

"The authorization you've received is being challenged as forged."

"The original owner has not approved this sale."

Inside the building, something changed.

Through the windows, I saw a man in a gray suit suddenly stand.

He began speaking urgently into his phone.

A few seconds later, another man hurried toward the exit.

Detective Ruiz recognized him.

"Richard Hayes."

Two investigators approached the doorway.

Richard stopped.

He looked toward our vehicle.

For one brief moment, our eyes met.

Then he turned and walked back inside.

"He's not leaving," Detective Ruiz said quietly.

A few minutes later, she received confirmation that officers could proceed with their investigation inside the building.

The title company had also placed the transaction on hold pending verification of the disputed authority.

Olivia exhaled.

But Vanessa wasn't finished.

She appeared in the entrance hall wearing her wedding gown.

Her hair was styled in elegant blonde waves.

Diamonds glittered around her neck.

And behind her stood a table covered with legal documents.

When she saw Luca, she smiled.

"Darling."

Her voice was sickeningly sweet.

"I knew you'd come."

Luca stepped forward.

"Where's the original trust amendment?"

Vanessa tilted her head.

"Still giving orders?"

"Answer the question."

She sighed dramatically.

"Richard has everything prepared."

"Once the transaction is completed, we can discuss the family's future."

Olivia stepped forward.

Her hands moved with unmistakable anger.

You have no right to sell my father's building.

I translated.

Vanessa laughed.

"Oh, sweetheart."

"You're still letting Claire speak for you?"

Olivia pulled out her phone.

She typed a message.

Then she held the screen directly in front of Vanessa.

I am telling you myself.

You are stealing from me.

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that Olivia was not the helpless woman she had spent months pretending to protect.

She was an adult who knew exactly what belonged to her.

And she had brought evidence.

Victor Bellini appeared behind Vanessa.

He was an imposing man with silver hair and an expensive charcoal suit.

"Luca, there's no reason for this unpleasantness."

"We're simply completing a business arrangement."

Luca looked at him.

"A business arrangement based on forged documents."

Victor's expression hardened.

"You should be careful making accusations against my family."

Luca gave a humorless smile.

"Your family?"

"You're standing in a room where your daughter tried to steal my sister's inheritance."

Victor stepped closer.

"Don't forget who you are, Luca."

"You have a reputation of your own."

The threat was unmistakable.

Everyone in Chicago knew the Moretti name carried a history of violence and organized crime.

Victor believed that history would make Luca afraid of public scrutiny.

He believed Luca would protect his reputation rather than expose the fraud.

For several seconds, the room was silent.

Then Luca said something that surprised us all.

"You're right."

Victor smiled.

"I thought you'd understand."

Luca shook his head.

"No."

"You're right that my family has a history I'm not proud of."

"I've spent years believing power meant making people afraid."

"But I won't let that fear become another weapon against Olivia."

He looked toward Detective Ruiz.

"I'll cooperate with the investigation, including any examination of my own decisions and business records."

Victor's smile vanished.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Luca, don't be stupid!"

"You could destroy everything your father built!"

Luca turned toward her.

"My father built something you don't understand."

"He built a future for his daughter."

"And you tried to steal it because you thought she couldn't defend herself."

Vanessa's face twisted with anger.

"She wouldn't even know what to do with all that money!"

Olivia moved closer.

Her hands rose.

I didn't translate immediately.

Instead, I looked at Vanessa.

"Would you like to know what she said?"

Vanessa glared at me.

"Fine."

I took a breath.

"She says she knows exactly what she wants to do."

"She wants to restore the theater, create jobs, and open a center where Deaf and hearing people can learn and perform together."

"She wants to use her inheritance for something meaningful."

I looked directly into Vanessa's eyes.

"And she says you will never understand that because you only know how to take."

Vanessa's face turned crimson.

"YOU LITTLE—"

"Enough," Detective Ruiz interrupted.

Investigators were speaking with the closing attorney and preserving the documents on the table.

The disputed sale had been stopped before completion.

Richard attempted to explain away the signatures as routine corporate authorizations.

But the investigators had the original trust records, Marissa's messages, Dominic's evidence, and the suspicious financial transactions.

When Detective Ruiz informed Richard that he was being arrested in connection with the investigation, his confident expression finally collapsed.

He looked toward Vanessa.

"Tell them it was your idea."

Vanessa stared at him.

"What?"

"You told me Luca would sign whatever I put in front of him!"

Victor stepped backward.

"Richard, be quiet."

But Richard was no longer listening.

"She promised I would receive a percentage after the property transfer!"

Vanessa lunged toward him.

"SHUT YOUR MOUTH!"

An officer stepped between them.

I watched the beautiful bride become a furious stranger.

Her expensive dress brushed against the table as she struggled to reach Richard.

Then Detective Ruiz approached her.

"Vanessa Bellini, you're under arrest."

Vanessa froze.

For the first time since I had known her, she had nothing to say.

The officers escorted her away.

Victor Bellini was detained for questioning, and investigators continued examining his role in the proposed sale.

As Vanessa passed Olivia, she stopped.

Her face was streaked with tears and ruined makeup.

"This is your fault."

Olivia looked directly at her.

Then she signed slowly.

No.

I translated.

"This is the result of your choices."

Vanessa stared at her.

Olivia continued signing.

You thought my silence would protect you.

But I was never silent.

You simply refused to listen.

I repeated every word.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

Then the officers led her through the doorway.

Outside, reporters were gathering.

But this time, Olivia wasn't hiding.

She walked toward the windows and looked out over the city.

Luca approached her.

He began signing carefully.

You did this.

Olivia shook her head.

Then she smiled.

We did this.

She turned toward me.

And Claire helped me find the courage to begin.

I felt tears fill my eyes.

But I shook my head.

"No, Olivia."

"You had that courage all along."

As the sun began setting over the Chicago River, I realized something extraordinary.

May you like

The wedding that was supposed to destroy the Moretti family had never happened.

And the woman Vanessa tried to erase had become the person who saved its future.
