Chapter 8 - THE WHISPERS ON THE TERRACE

|

The rain had stopped, leaving the night air crisp, cold, and carrying the rich scent of pine and wet stone from the gardens.

A blanket of mist rolled off Lake Michigan, swirling across the flagstones of the private second-floor terrace.

Dominic pulled his heavy black wool overcoat around my shoulders, the fabric warm from his body and smelling of sandalwood and cedar.

The coat swallowed my small frame, reaching nearly to my ankles, but it chased away the chill of the midnight breeze.

He stood beside me, leaning both hands against the carved stone balustrade, looking out over the dark, rolling waves of the lake.

“Fourteen months, Nora,” Dominic said quietly, his deep voice carrying over the sound of the water.

I looked up at his sharp, handsome profile against the moonlight.

“Fourteen months, sir?”

“You’ve worked in this house for fourteen months,” he continued, turning his head to look at me.

“I watched you carry laundry baskets that were too heavy for you.”

“I watched you polish the brass on the grand staircase until your knuckles were red and raw.”

“I saw the way you greeted the kitchen staff every morning with a smile, even when you looked exhausted from working double shifts.”

My cheeks flushed with sudden heat, my hands clutching the lapels of his heavy coat.

“I had to pay for my sister’s school, Mr. Moretti,” I said softly.

“Maya is only twenty-one.”

“She deserves a chance to build a good life outside the south side.”

Dominic took half a step closer, closing the distance between us until his shoulder gently brushed against mine.

“And what about your life, Nora?” he asked, his dark eyes searching my face with breathtaking focus.

“What about what you deserve?”

I swallowed hard, looking down at the stone floor.

“I never thought about it that way.”

“I just wanted to make sure my family was safe.”

“You have spent your entire youth protecting other people,” Dominic whispered, his hand reaching out to gently touch my chin.

His thumb lifted my face, forcing me to meet his piercing, vulnerable gaze.

“Tonight, you protected a mother who had no one left in the world.”

“You stood up to my aunt when men twice your size were looking at their shoes.”

His fingers were warm and strong against my skin, sending an electric shiver straight down my spine.

“I spent five years surrounded by capos, politicians, and bloodlines,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a low, intimate rumble.

“Everyone wanted something from me.”

“They wanted contracts, they wanted protection, or they wanted my name.”

“You are the only person who ever walked into my presence asking for nothing except mercy for an old woman.”

“Dominic...” my voice trembled, using his first name without realizing it.

A faint, beautiful smile curved his lips at the sound of his name on my breath.

“I have been alone in this house for a long time, Nora,” he whispered, his other hand coming up to cup the side of my face.

“I thought that was the price of wearing this ring.”

“I thought that power required living with a frozen heart.”

He leaned down slowly, giving me every opportunity to pull away, to step back into the safety of being a servant.

I didn't move.

I leaned into his warm palm, my breath mingling with his in the cold autumn air.

When his lips touched mine, the entire world seemed to stop spinning.

The kiss was gentle, reverent, and filled with a fierce, protective devotion that made my knees weak.

It wasn't the kiss of a ruthless mafia boss claiming property; it was the kiss of a lonely man finding his home in the storm.

He pulled me against his broad chest, his powerful arms wrapping around my waist, holding me as if I were the most precious treasure in the city.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, his chest was heaving with quiet emotion.

“You are not a maid in this house, Nora,” Dominic whispered against my lips.

“You are the light that brought us out of the dark.”

Suddenly, the emergency radio on Dominic’s belt emitted a sharp, frantic burst of static.

Marcus’s breathless voice shattered the quiet of the terrace:

“Boss! We have a critical intercept on the southern expressway!”

“Daniel Whitmore’s transport van was just ambushed by three armored SUVs!”

May you like

“They blew the axles with high-caliber rounds!”

“The Russian syndicate from Bridgeport just extracted Daniel from federal custody!”
