Chapter 13 - THE CONFESSION THAT BROKE VANESSA BELLINI|

Vanessa Bellini returned to Chicago forty-eight hours later.

She wasn't wearing her red silk gown.

She wasn't smiling.

And she no longer looked like the woman who had once commanded an entire mansion with a snap of her fingers.

She arrived at her attorney's office wearing dark trousers, a plain blouse, and oversized sunglasses.

Her hair was tied tightly behind her head.

Two investigators waited nearby.

Detective Sullivan entered the interview room with a recording specialist.

Vanessa's attorney sat beside her.

Then the questioning began.

At first, Vanessa repeated the same explanations she'd offered for months.

She said Olivia was overwhelmed.

She said she'd been trying to help.

She claimed the documents had been handled by Adrian's accountants.

And she insisted she'd never intended to hurt Emma.

Detective Sullivan listened.

Then she placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Olivia standing at Luca's engagement dinner.

My cream-colored cardigan covered her shoulders.

Emma was crying.

And Vanessa stood nearby in her red gown.

The detective waited.

Vanessa stared at the picture.

“What is this supposed to prove?”

“Nothing by itself.”

Sullivan's voice remained calm.

“But I'd like you to explain why Olivia wasn't allowed to use the family sitting room to feed her child.”

Vanessa looked away.

“I was managing an important event.”

“Did Olivia ask for somewhere private?”

“Yes.”

“Did you refuse?”

“I suggested alternatives.”

“Which alternatives?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“I don't remember.”

The detective placed another photograph on the table.

It showed the engagement seating chart.

Olivia's name had been removed from the main dining table.

A handwritten note beside the chart read:

Move Olivia upstairs after introductions.

Vanessa stared at it.

Sullivan continued.

“Did you write this?”

A long silence followed.

Then Vanessa whispered, “Yes.”

“Why?”

“She was making everything difficult.”

The detective waited.

Vanessa's composure began cracking.

“She cried constantly.”

“She wouldn't stop talking about Matthew.”

“She kept asking Luca for help.”

Sullivan leaned forward.

“And you wanted her to leave?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Because Adrian needed her out of the apartment.”

For several seconds, the room went silent.

Sullivan didn't react dramatically.

She simply asked another question.

“Why did Adrian need her out?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because Matthew had hidden documents.”

“What documents?”

“Financial records.”

“And you knew?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.”

The detective continued.

“Did you know about the disputed transfer of Matthew's ownership interest?”

Vanessa began crying.

“Yes.”

“Did Olivia authorize it?”

“No.”

The word was barely audible.

Sullivan waited.

Then Vanessa whispered, “Adrian told me it would only be temporary.”

“What would?”

“The transfer.”

“He said the company needed protection until the expansion was complete.”

The detective looked at her.

“Who signed Olivia's name?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Her attorney leaned toward her.

They spoke quietly for several moments.

Then Vanessa looked up.

“I did.”

The confession seemed to drain the air from the room.

She continued.

“I copied her signature from documents she'd signed during the pregnancy.”

“Did Olivia know?”

“No.”

“Did you tell Luca?”

“No.”

Vanessa began crying harder.

“I thought Adrian would fix it.”

Sullivan remained calm.

“What happened when Matthew discovered the financial irregularities?”

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“He confronted Adrian.”

“Were you present?”

“Yes.”

“At the restaurant?”

“Yes.”

“The night he died?”

Vanessa hesitated.

Then nodded.

The detective leaned forward.

“What happened?”

Vanessa stared at the photograph.

“Matthew was furious.”

“He said Adrian had stolen from him.”

“He threatened to go to the police.”

She swallowed.

“Adrian begged him to reconsider.”

“Did Matthew agree?”

“No.”

“Then what happened?”

Vanessa began shaking.

“Adrian told him he'd regret it.”

The room fell silent.

Sullivan continued.

“Did Adrian threaten Matthew physically?”

Vanessa looked toward her attorney.

Then whispered, “He said Matthew wasn't going to destroy everything they'd built.”

“Did he explain what he meant?”

“No.”

“Did you believe he intended to hurt Matthew?”

Vanessa covered her face.

“I didn't know.”

The detective waited.

Then asked the question that mattered most.

“Why did you contact the mechanic after the accident?”

Vanessa stopped crying.

For several seconds, she didn't speak.

Finally, she whispered, “Because Adrian told me to.”

“Why?”

“He wanted the work order removed.”

“Did you ask why?”

Vanessa nodded.

“What did he say?”

Her face crumpled.

“He said the police would misunderstand.”

Sullivan leaned closer.

“Did you know what work had been performed on Matthew's vehicle?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not until later.”

“What did you learn?”

The room went silent.

Vanessa looked down at her hands.

Then she whispered:

“Adrian said he wanted to frighten Matthew.”

The detective waited.

Vanessa continued.

“He said if Matthew missed an important meeting because of car trouble, he'd understand how vulnerable he was.”

She began crying again.

“But something went wrong.”

Sullivan's expression remained controlled.

“Are you saying Adrian arranged interference with the vehicle?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.”

“Did he tell you that directly?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The night after the crash.”

The detective asked for details about the conversation.

Vanessa described Adrian arriving at her apartment, pale and shaking.

He told her the situation had gotten out of control.

He said Matthew wasn't supposed to die.

He begged Vanessa not to tell Luca.

And he claimed that if Luca discovered the truth, both their lives would be ruined.

Vanessa agreed to help conceal the suspicious records.

Then she gradually became more deeply involved.

She helped manage the disputed ownership transfer.

She discouraged Olivia from asking questions.

She interfered with communication between Olivia and Eleanor.

And when Luca began planning their wedding, Vanessa saw an opportunity to remove Olivia from the mansion.

Sullivan listened carefully.

Then asked another question.

“Why did you tell Eleanor that Olivia wanted Emma to live with her?”

Vanessa began crying harder.

“Adrian wanted Olivia distracted.”

“Distracted from what?”

“The apartment.”

“He believed Matthew had hidden evidence there.”

“And you thought taking a newborn away from her mother would accomplish that?”

Vanessa couldn't answer.

The detective waited.

Finally, Vanessa whispered, “I thought if Olivia went somewhere else, Eleanor could care for Emma.”

“Did Olivia agree?”

“No.”

“Did you ask?”

“No.”

For the first time, Vanessa seemed to understand the cruelty of what she'd done.

But understanding it didn't erase the damage.

Sullivan continued documenting her account.

She asked about the threats against me.

Vanessa admitted she had offered me money to stay away from Olivia.

She also acknowledged contacting a private security employee after the engagement dinner.

But she denied ordering anyone to harm my mother.

Investigators would have to determine what the evidence supported.

By the time the interview ended, Vanessa had provided information requiring further investigation of Adrian's role in Matthew's death.

She had also admitted conduct that could expose her to serious legal consequences.

Her attorney requested a break.

Vanessa sat alone with her hands folded.

Then she whispered something the detective's recorder captured clearly.

“I hated her because Luca always looked at his sister like she mattered.”

Sullivan looked up.

“Who?”

“Olivia.”

Vanessa began crying.

“She had everything I wanted.”

“A brother who protected her.”

“A husband who adored her.”

“A baby everyone loved.”

Her voice broke.

“And even after Matthew died, people still cared about her.”

The detective didn't respond.

Vanessa stared at the table.

“I thought if I made her smaller, I'd finally feel important.”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Sullivan answered quietly.

“Hurting Olivia didn't make you important.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“No.”

“It just made me cruel.”

That evening, Luca received an update about Vanessa's statement.

He listened without speaking.

Then went upstairs to Olivia's room.

She was sitting in the rocking chair with Emma asleep against her chest.

“Olivia?”

She looked up.

“Did Vanessa tell them?”

He nodded.

Tears filled her eyes.

“About Matthew?”

“She gave investigators information about Adrian.”

Olivia swallowed.

“Does that mean we know everything?”

“Not yet.”

He sat beside her.

“But we're closer.”

Olivia looked down at Emma.

For several minutes, she said nothing.

Then she whispered, “I used to think Vanessa hated me because I was weak.”

Luca frowned.

“Why?”

“Because she always made me feel that way.”

He looked devastated.

Olivia continued.

“But Matthew loved me because I was strong.”

Her eyes filled.

“And somewhere along the way, I forgot that.”

Luca took her hand.

“You're still strong.”

She smiled faintly.

“I know.”

It was the first time she'd said those words without hesitation.

Later that night, Detective Sullivan contacted Luca again.

Investigators had located additional evidence supporting parts of Vanessa's account.

The mechanic had provided a statement.

Financial records linked Adrian to payments surrounding the vehicle work.

And newly recovered communications established that Adrian knew Matthew intended to report the fraud.

The investigation was moving quickly.

Then Sullivan told Luca something unexpected.

Adrian had been stopped while attempting to leave the state.

He was now being questioned.

Luca closed his eyes.

“Is he under arrest?”

“Investigators have detained him in connection with the developing case.”

“What about Matthew?”

The detective paused.

Then answered.

“We've obtained evidence that supports seeking homicide charges.”

Luca gripped the phone.

Sullivan continued.

“And Adrian has requested to speak with you.”

Luca went still.

“Why?”

May you like

The detective's voice remained steady.

“He says there's something you should know about the night Matthew died.”
