Chapter 9 - The Audio Tape

|
Dinner concluded around ten o'clock, and Daniel helped an exhausted but deeply content Helen back up to her suite.
I offered to clear the dining table, but Marco caught my wrist, shaking his head with a gentle, firm smile.
“The staff will handle the dishes, Olivia,” he said softly.
“Come with me.
There is something Daniel and I need you to hear.”
I followed Marco down the carpeted stairs into the basement, where a heavy reinforced steel door led into the estate's private security vault.
Daniel was already inside, standing beside a small desk beneath a single fluorescent light.
On the table sat an old, scuffed cassette recorder, the kind that had been popular in the late 1990s.
Beside it lay a small black tape labeled simply: Salvatore - Final Record.
“Where did you find this?” Marco asked, his voice hushed with reverence as he stared at his father’s handwriting on the plastic casing.
“Inside the false bottom of father’s safe deposit box at Mellon Bank,” Daniel answered quietly.
“He left instructions with his lawyer to give it to me only if he died under suspicious circumstances.
The lawyer was bribed by Moretti to keep it hidden, but we recovered it from his office this afternoon.”
Marco reached out, his hand hovering over the tape before he finally pressed it into the player.
He pressed PLAY.
A soft hiss of static filled the cold, concrete room.
Then, a deep, raspy voice echoed through the speakers—a voice that sounded like gravel and smoke, carrying an authority that made the hair on my arms stand up.
“Marco. Daniel. If you are listening to this, I am already dead.”
Marco’s breath hitched in his throat.
He closed his eyes, his head bowing slightly under the weight of his father’s voice.
“For thirty years, I have built this empire to protect our family,” the recording continued.
“But I let a serpent into our garden. Thomas Warren—or rather, Thomas Moretti—has been plotting to seize our shipping lanes for over a decade. I discovered yesterday that his daughter, Susie, has been placed in our path to seduce one of you. I do not know which of you she will target, but I know her purpose is to pit brother against brother.”
Daniel let out a ragged breath, turning his face away toward the wall.
“Daniel, my hot-headed boy,” Salvatore’s voice softened, filled with an aching paternal tenderness that brought tears to my eyes.
“You have your mother’s heart. You trust too easily, and you love too deeply. Do not let them use your goodness as a weapon against your brother.”
“And Marco,” the voice grew stern, steady as an anchor in a hurricane.
“You are the pillar. You carry the weight of this empire on your back. When the storm comes, do not let your cold mind blind you to the truth of blood. Daniel would die for you. Never doubt his loyalty. If they kill me, do not seek revenge in anger. Seek justice with precision. Protect each other. You are all that remains of me.”
A sharp click sounded as the tape ended, followed by the steady, rhythmic whirr of the plastic reels spinning in silence.
No one spoke.
The silence in the vault was heavier than stone.
Marco stood perfectly still, his knuckles pressed against the table, his broad shoulders trembling with the violent effort of containing his grief.
For two years, he had believed his father died in a random street dispute.
For two years, he had believed his brother was a greedy embezzler.
The sheer magnitude of the deception crashed down on him all at once.
Suddenly, Marco turned and pulled Daniel into another fierce, desperate embrace.
“I failed him,” Marco choked out, his voice breaking entirely.
“I failed him, Danny.
I brought her into this house.
I let her sit in his chair.”
“No, Marco,” Daniel said firmly, gripping his brother’s back.
“You didn't fail him.
We survived.
Both of us are here, standing on our feet.
And tonight, we finish what he started.”
Marco slowly pulled away, wiping the moisture from his eyes, his expression hardening into pure, unyielding granite.
He turned his gaze toward me.
I was standing near the doorway, tears streaming silently down my cheeks, completely moved by the raw humanity of these two men who the world viewed as ruthless monsters.
Marco walked across the concrete floor and stopped directly in front of me.
He reached up and gently dried my cheeks with the tips of his fingers.
“You gave us our brother back, Olivia,” he whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion so deep it made my knees weak.
“Without you, that tape would have stayed buried forever.”
“Your father loved you both very much, Marco,” I whispered back, looking into his dark, tortured eyes.
“Now show him that his legacy is unbreakable.”
Marco nodded once, a dark, dangerous fire igniting in his eyes.

“Load the weapons, Daniel,” Marco commanded, turning back toward the vault door.
“We leave for the docks in twenty minutes.”
