Chapter 9 - THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK|

For six years, I had imagined what I would say if Ryan Walker ever appeared at my door.

Sometimes I imagined screaming at him.

Sometimes I imagined calmly telling him everything he'd missed.

And sometimes, when Lily was sick or I couldn't pay the electricity bill, I imagined asking him why loving his daughter had been so easy to abandon.

But when I finally saw him standing in the hallway, I felt something unexpected.

Fear.

"Emily," he said softly.

I kept the security chain fastened.

"How did you find me?"

He glanced at the flowers.

"I heard you were having a hard time."

"Who told you where I was staying?"

He hesitated.

"Someone reached out."

I stared at him.

"What someone?"

Ryan shifted his weight.

"Can we talk inside?"

"No."

His expression changed.

"Em, come on."

"Don't call me that."

He looked down.

I took a slow breath.

"Lily is asleep, and you aren't going to wake her."

Ryan nodded reluctantly.

"Okay."

"Then tell me why you're here."

He held out the carnations.

"I thought maybe we could start over."

I almost laughed.

"Start over?"

His face tightened.

"I know I made mistakes."

"Ryan, you left when she was two."

"I was young."

"So was I."

He looked away.

"You don't understand what I was going through."

I stared at him.

"I understand that I had a two-year-old daughter who cried at the window because she thought her daddy was coming home."

His expression faltered.

"I sent money when I could."

"You sent money twice in six years."

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

I continued.

"You missed every birthday, every school play, and every time she was sick."

My voice shook.

"She lost her first tooth without you."

Ryan looked toward the floor.

"Does she remember me?"

I swallowed.

"She remembers that someone who used to live with us went away."

He flinched.

I wasn't trying to hurt him.

I was telling the truth.

Then he reached into his jacket and pulled out an envelope.

"I heard you were investigated for neglect."

My stomach dropped.

"Who told you that?"

"Emily, I'm her father."

He straightened.

"If she's not safe, I have a right to be concerned."

I stared at him.

"Where were those concerns for the last six years?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he handed me the envelope.

Inside was a letter from an attorney indicating that Ryan intended to seek custody or parenting-time orders.

My hands began shaking.

"You can't be serious."

Ryan's voice grew defensive.

"I was told you left her outside in freezing weather."

I felt sick.

"I didn't."

"That's not what I heard."

"From whom?"

He hesitated again.

And suddenly I understood.

"Vanessa Bellini."

Ryan went completely still.

I stared at him.

"She's the person who contacted you, isn't she?"

He looked away.

I felt a terrible coldness settle inside me.

"How much did she offer you?"

"Emily—"

"How much?"

His face reddened.

"She said she would help cover the legal expenses."

"That's not what I asked."

Ryan exhaled sharply.

"Fifteen thousand dollars."

I gripped the doorframe.

He rushed to explain.

"I lost my job in Ohio, and I was behind on rent."

I looked at the flowers in his hand.

"Did she buy those too?"

Ryan lowered them.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked the question that mattered most.

"Did you come here because you wanted to see Lily, or because someone paid you to make me afraid?"

His eyes filled with something that might have been shame.

"I thought maybe I could do both."

I shook my head.

"That's not how fatherhood works."

He looked toward the apartment.

"Please, Emily, I just want to see her."

"You can speak to my attorney."

I stepped back.

"Any decisions about contact will be made with Lily's safety and well-being first."

Ryan swallowed.

Then he said something that made me stop.

"Vanessa told me you were already planning to live at the mansion."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"She said Lily would need somewhere else to stay once you moved in."

My pulse quickened.

"Did she tell you when?"

"After the wedding."

He looked confused.

"She said you'd signed papers."

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

The forged agreement.

The lie about separating us.

The assumption that my daughter could be moved around like a piece of furniture.

"Ryan, those papers were forged."

He stared at me.

"What?"

"I never agreed to live away from Lily."

His face slowly changed.

For the first time, he seemed genuinely frightened.

I looked directly at him.

"If you have any messages, payments, or documents from Vanessa, preserve them."

He swallowed.

"Why?"

"Because she's using you to continue hurting our daughter."

Ryan glanced at the carnations.

Then he whispered, "I didn't know about the part where they left her outside."

I stared at him.

"I hope that's true."

He left without seeing Lily.

I called Rachel immediately and explained everything.

She assured me that receiving a threatened legal claim did not mean Lily could be taken from my care without a proper legal process.

She also told me to preserve every detail of Ryan's visit.

The following morning, I learned that Ryan had contacted his attorney again.

For a moment, I hoped he had decided to withdraw.

Then a process server arrived with formal court documents.

Ryan had filed a petition requesting a change in custody arrangements and emergency temporary relief.

I sat on the edge of the bed staring at the papers.

Lily was humming in the bathroom while brushing her teeth.

She sounded happy.

She sounded safe.

And I was terrified of what the next few weeks might bring.

Then I noticed the date on the supporting statement attached to Ryan's petition.

It had been prepared before the engagement dinner.

Before Lily had been left outside.

Before Luca had ended his engagement.

I immediately called Rachel.

"Vanessa was planning to use Lily's father against me before any of this happened."
