Chapter 12 - THE RING SHE FINALLY RETURNED|

A week after Ethan's science fair, Elena arranged a final meeting concerning the forged correspondence and wedding expenses.

It took place in a private conference room above the Moretti restaurant.

Luca attended with Elena and Mara.

Vanessa arrived with her own attorney.

Patrick had already provided a written account and supporting records through his legal representative.

Grace chose not to attend.

She told Luca that she didn't need to sit across from Vanessa to understand what had happened.

She wanted the documents corrected, the threats addressed, and her son's privacy protected.

Luca respected her decision.

I remained downstairs preparing the dining room for an ordinary evening service.

The same chandeliers that had illuminated Vanessa's engagement dinner hung above me.

The tables were arranged differently now.

The white flowers had been replaced with small candles and simple greenery.

But I could still picture Ethan sitting beneath those lights, trying not to cry as Vanessa held his father's watch.

Around noon, Elena asked me to come upstairs.

She needed to confirm my account of the engagement dinner and the folder I'd delivered to Patrick.

Vanessa watched me enter.

Her expression was almost amused.

"Well, of course Natalie is involved."

I remained standing beside Elena.

"Good afternoon."

Vanessa looked at Luca.

"You're really letting a housemaid participate in business matters?"

Luca answered calmly.

"She's a witness to events that matter."

Elena asked me a few specific questions.

I answered carefully.

I described what I'd personally seen and repeated the words I remembered.

I didn't guess what Vanessa had discussed with Patrick behind closed doors.

I didn't claim to know what was inside the cream-colored folder.

When Elena finished, she thanked me and said I could leave.

But before I reached the door, Vanessa spoke.

"You must be very pleased with yourself."

I stopped.

Then I turned.

"No, Miss Bellini."

Her smile faded.

"I wish none of this had happened to Ethan."

Downstairs, I resumed setting the tables.

Nearly two hours passed before the meeting ended.

I knew little about what had been said until Luca asked me to bring coffee to the conference room afterward.

Vanessa and her attorney had already left.

Elena was gathering documents.

Luca stood beside the window, looking exhausted.

"Is it over?" I asked.

Elena answered carefully.

"The engagement is over."

"And the other matters?"

"They'll take longer."

She explained that the records now supported a clearer account of what had happened.

Vanessa had directed Patrick to prepare and send the letter that misrepresented Luca's wishes.

Patrick had processed the unauthorized suspension of Ethan's education payments.

The false request supposedly signed by Grace had been created using an image of her signature from an earlier document.

Vanessa had also arranged the questionable wedding invoice through her cousin's event company.

The legal review had not yet resolved every financial question.

But the company had confirmed that the purported heritage installation was never delivered.

The vendor had been asked for repayment and a complete accounting.

The messages sent to Ethan were also being examined as part of the report made to the authorities.

I looked at Luca.

"What did Vanessa say?"

He stared toward the window.

"She said she wanted a marriage where I put her first."

I shook my head.

"She could have asked you for that without hurting Ethan."

Luca nodded.

"That's what I told her."

Then he turned toward me.

"She said she felt she was always competing with Daniel."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Daniel died two years ago."

"I know."

Luca's voice tightened.

"She thought every Sunday dinner was a reminder that someone else had a place in my life before she arrived."

"Did she apologize?"

He hesitated.

"She said she was sorry things had become so ugly."

I looked down.

That sounded very different from apologizing for what she'd done.

Luca moved toward the conference table.

A small black jewelry box sat beside his phone.

He opened it.

Inside lay Vanessa's engagement ring.

The diamond caught the afternoon light.

For several seconds, I remembered the way it had sparkled while she demanded Ethan's watch.

Back then, the ring had seemed like proof that she belonged at the center of everything.

Now it looked strangely empty.

"She returned it?" I asked.

Luca nodded.

"She wanted to know whether I would reconsider if she gave us time."

"What did you say?"

"I told her there was nothing to reconsider."

He closed the box.

"Marriage doesn't mean asking someone to abandon every other person they love."

I nodded.

"And it doesn't give anyone permission to frighten a child."

Luca looked toward the dining room below us.

"I keep thinking about Ethan that night."

"Why?"

"Because even after Vanessa took his watch, he apologized for upsetting her."

His voice broke.

"He thought he had to be grateful for being allowed to sit at my table."

Later that evening, we visited Grace to explain the next steps.

Luca brought the corrected education-account records.

Elena had arranged for an independent administrator to oversee future transfers, with Grace receiving regular statements.

Grace read everything carefully.

Then she looked up.

"I appreciate you fixing this."

Luca nodded.

"You shouldn't have had to ask."

She paused.

"But please understand that money wasn't the thing Ethan missed most."

"I know."

Ethan had been listening from the doorway.

He approached slowly, wearing his father's watch.

"Uncle Luca?"

Luca turned.

"Hey, buddy."

The boy looked toward the framed photograph of Daniel.

Then he asked something that made every adult in the room fall silent.

"When you look at me, do you only see my dad?"

Luca stared at him.

Ethan's voice trembled.

"Because sometimes I think everybody just feels sorry for me because he's gone."

I watched Luca slowly kneel beside the boy.

And I understood that even with the forged documents exposed and Vanessa gone, there was still one wound nobody had healed.

Ethan didn't just need to know that Daniel had been loved.

He needed to know that he was loved for the person he was becoming.
