Chapter 11 - The Signature That Could Destroy Me|

We returned to Chicago with Eleanor's evidence secured in a locked case.
Luca had arranged for an independent attorney to meet us at the mansion.
Her name was Marisol Vega, and she specialized in elder law and financial exploitation.
She was direct, observant, and completely unimpressed by Luca's reputation.
"I need to make one thing clear," she said when we sat down.
"I'm here to represent Teresa."
"Not you, Mr. Moretti."
Luca nodded.
"That's exactly what I want."
Marisol turned to Teresa.
"Mrs. Moretti, do you understand why your son contacted me?"
Teresa sat straighter.
"Because someone is trying to take control of my property by pretending I no longer understand my own affairs."
Marisol smiled slightly.
"That's a very clear answer."
Teresa returned the smile.
"I've been giving clear answers for seventy-nine years."
"People have simply stopped listening."
I watched Marisol's expression soften.
Then the attorney began reviewing the documents.
She examined Eleanor's trust records, Nora's recordings, Simon's security footage, and the forged authorization containing the Moretti family seal.
She also reviewed the bank communications that Luca's legal team had obtained.
After nearly three hours, she looked up.
"This is potentially a serious case of financial exploitation."
"There's also evidence of document fraud and efforts to interfere with Teresa's independence."
Luca leaned forward.
"What happens next?"
"We preserve the evidence and notify the appropriate authorities."
"We also seek emergency court protection to prevent any unauthorized property transfer."
Teresa spoke before Luca could respond.
"And the guardianship papers?"
Marisol's expression became grave.
"That's what concerns me most."
She removed another document from her folder.
"A petition was filed this morning."
My stomach dropped.
"Already?"
Marisol nodded.
"The petition alleges that Teresa has become incapable of managing her financial affairs."
"It requests temporary authority to safeguard her interests."
Luca's voice hardened.
"Who filed it?"
"Vanessa's attorney, acting for Vanessa."
Teresa's hands tightened around her shawl.
"She has no right to make decisions for me."
"Filing a petition doesn't give her that right," Marisol said gently.
"And allegations aren't proof."
Then she placed another page on the table.
"Unfortunately, the petition includes several supporting statements."
One was supposedly from Luca.
It claimed he was deeply concerned about his mother's confusion.
Another was an unsigned medical summary describing deteriorating cognitive function.
I stared at the third document.
My name appeared at the bottom.
Hannah Brooks — Household Care Assistant.
I picked it up.
The statement claimed that I had observed Teresa forgetting her son's identity, refusing medication, wandering unsupervised, and behaving unpredictably.
I couldn't breathe.
"I never said any of this."
Marisol watched me carefully.
"Is this your signature?"
"No."
I looked at Luca.
"Someone forged my name."
He read the statement.
His jaw tightened.
"Vanessa."
I felt something close to panic.
My employment history was already being used against me.
Now someone had created a false declaration suggesting that I had betrayed the very woman I was trying to protect.
"What if the judge believes it?" I whispered.
Marisol held out her hand.
"Then we demonstrate that it's false."
"Do you have a record of where you were on the date this declaration was supposedly signed?"
I examined the document.
It was dated the evening of the engagement party.
At 8:06 p.m.
I remembered exactly where I had been.
"I was carrying Teresa up the staircase around that time."
Luca looked at me.
"The photographer's recording."
I nodded.
"The security footage shows I was with her."
Marisol made a note.
"Good."
"That gives us independent evidence contradicting the document's account."
She continued examining the declaration.
Then she frowned.
"There's something else."
"What?" I asked.
"The signature appears to be copied from your employment agreement."
I stared at her.
"How can you tell?"
"The unusual loop on the capital B is identical, including a tiny ink break."
"A handwriting expert will need to examine the originals, but the similarity is striking."
I remembered signing my temporary employment contract nine days before the engagement.
Vanessa had supervised the paperwork.
She'd been smiling then.
She'd called me a wonderful addition to the household.
All along, she'd been gathering documents she could use against me.
Later that afternoon, I stood alone in the garden.
The fountain was running again.
The same fountain beside which Vanessa had tried to buy my silence.
Luca found me there.
"Marisol says the court may schedule an urgent hearing."
I nodded.
"Good."
He studied my face.
"You're frightened."
"Of course I'm frightened."
"I've spent my entire adult life trying to do the right thing when other people look away."
"And somehow, every time I do, someone with money decides I'm the problem."
Luca was quiet.
Then he said, "I can't undo what happened at your old job."
"And I can't erase the threats Vanessa made."
"But I can make sure you're not facing this alone."
I looked at him.
"Don't promise things you can't control."
He nodded slowly.
"Fair."
"Then I'll promise something I can control."
"What?"
"I won't ask you to lie to protect my family."
"And I won't hide the truth because it's embarrassing."
Something in his voice made me believe him.
Not because he was powerful.
But because he had finally understood how much damage silence could cause.
That evening, Simon arrived with another discovery.
He had obtained an authenticated copy of the suspicious medical summary attached to Vanessa's petition.
The document carried the name of a physician Teresa had never visited.
But its most disturbing detail wasn't the doctor's name.
It was the date.
The report had been prepared nearly a month before the engagement party.
Before Teresa had supposedly shown the dangerous confusion that Vanessa claimed required emergency intervention.
Marisol studied it.
"Someone planned this long before the staircase incident."
Luca looked at the forged report.
Then he turned to his mother.
"How long has she been trying to convince you that you're losing your mind?"
Teresa lowered her eyes.
For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered something that broke my heart.
"Since the day I told her I would never give her Harbor House."
