Chapter 9 - Unraveling the Empire

The grand foyer of the Moretti estate was bathed in the harsh, flashing red-and-blue strobes of twelve federal law enforcement vehicles idling on the gravel drive.
Special Agent Miller stood in the center of the shattered hall, surrounded by eight armed FBI tactical officers wearing windbreakers with bold yellow lettering. Miller was a sharp-featured man in his late forties, clutching a thick stack of warrants in a leather binder, his eyes scanning the bullet-riddled walls with smug satisfaction.
“Luca Moretti,” Miller announced as Luca descended the grand staircase with deliberate, unhurried steps. “You’re looking remarkably intact for a man whose house just hosted a miniature civil war.”
Luca stopped on the third step from the bottom, looking down at the federal agent with icy detachment. Dante stood behind him, hands clasped behind his back, six loyal guards flanking the upper landing.
“Agent Miller,” Luca said smoothly. “I wasn't aware the Federal Bureau of Investigation had begun moonlight services as Salvatore Romano’s private cleanup crew.”
Miller scoffed, opening his binder. “Save the rhetoric, Luca. Salvatore Romano walked into the Dirksen Federal Building at midnight. He handed over bank records, shipping manifests, and a sworn deposition detailing racketeering, extortion, and the maritime murder of your brother, Julian. He’s singing like a canary, and the Department of Justice just granted him full protective custody.”
“Romano claimed Julian was murdered?” Luca asked, an amused, dangerous smirk touching the corners of his mouth.
“He confessed to orchestrating the boat explosion,” Miller said firmly. “Which makes you an accessory after the fact for the retaliatory hits carried out across the city tonight. We have a federal warrant to seize this property, freeze every domestic account tied to the Moretti foundation, and take you into federal custody pending grand jury indictment.”
Miller signaled to two agents, who unclipped handcuffs from their duty belts and stepped forward.
“Before you put those on me, Miller,” Luca said calmly, holding up a single finger, “you might want to verify whose signature is on that immunity deal.”
Miller frowned, his eyes narrowing. “Deputy Director Vance signed off on the provisional agreement an hour ago.”
“Then Deputy Director Vance just committed treason against the United States government,” a raspy, booming voice echoed from the elevator vestibule.
Every head in the foyer snapped toward the hallway.
Julian Moretti emerged into the light, seated in a high-tech electric wheelchair operated by Liam, my younger brother. Julian’s face was bruised, his arm strapped into a sling, but his posture was completely erect, radiating the undeniable, terrifying charisma of the eldest Moretti heir.
Beside them walked Dr. Vance—who happened to be the twin brother of Deputy Director Vance of the FBI—holding an encrypted digital tablet.
Agent Miller froze, his jaw slackening as he stared at the man whose murder warrant he was currently executing.
“Julian Moretti?” Miller stammered, taking an involuntary step backward. “You’re... you were declared dead four years ago.”
“Reports of my demise were greatly exaggerated,” Julian replied, his gray eyes fixing Miller with lethal focus. “Especially by Salvatore Romano, who held me in a private torture facility for the last three weeks with the active assistance of your office, Agent Miller.”
The color drained from Miller’s face. “That’s an absurd allegation—”
“Is it?” Luca interrupted, stepping down from the final stair and approaching Miller.
Luca held up the tiny quartz cylinder he had extracted from Bruno’s medallion earlier that night.
“My father didn't just record mafia dealings on this cipher, Miller,” Luca explained, his voice echoing with absolute authority. “Antonio Moretti was an informant for the Department of Justice from 1998 until the day he died. He was working directly with the Attorney General to dismantle the Romano syndicate’s human trafficking and fentanyl networks.”
Luca tapped the quartz against Miller’s leather binder.
“Every offshore account Salvatore Romano owns is cataloged on this drive,” Luca continued. “Every wire transfer to your personal accounts in the Cayman Islands is documented with date, time, and routing numbers. And the voice recordings of you discussing the elimination of my father’s dog to ensure the key was never recovered were uploaded to the United States Attorney General’s private terminal ten minutes ago.”
Miller’s hands began to shake. The two tactical agents flanking him glanced at each other, their grips on the handcuffs loosening, instinctively taking a half-step away from their lead agent.
A phone inside Miller’s windbreaker began buzzing frantically.
Miller stared at Luca, his eyes wide with horror. He reached into his pocket with trembling fingers, pulling out his government-issued phone. He answered it, holding it to his ear without speaking.
We could hear the furious, muffled shouting of a woman’s voice through the receiver from three feet away: *“Agent Miller, stand down immediately! Relinquish your weapon to tactical lead Johnson! You are under arrest for federal conspiracy and treason!”*
Miller’s hand dropped. The phone slipped from his fingers, shattering onto the marble floor.
Tactical Lead Johnson stepped forward immediately, his face unreadable, drawing his sidearm and leveling it directly at his supervisor’s chest.
“Weapon on the floor, Miller,” Johnson ordered coldly. “Hands behind your head. Now.”
Miller offered no resistance. He unholstered his weapon, kicked it across the floorboards, and knelt onto the marble, his career and his freedom ending in a matter of seconds.
Johnson looked at Luca, nodding with curt, professional respect. “Mr. Moretti. The Attorney General extends her deepest regrets for this breach of protocol. Federal protection will be withdrawn from Salvatore Romano within the hour.”
“Thank you, Agent Johnson,” Luca said smoothly. “Give the Attorney General my regards. Tell her the Moretti family always honors its agreements.”
As the federal tactical team escorted Miller out into the flashing lights, the grand foyer finally fell quiet.
Julian let out a long, exhausted breath, slumping slightly in his wheelchair. “Well played, little brother. Dad would have been proud.”
Luca walked over to Julian, placing a hand on his brother’s good shoulder, squeezing it with fierce warmth. “Go back to the medical suite, Julian. Rest. Liam, take care of him.”
“You got it, Mr. Moretti,” Liam said, his chest puffing out with pride, navigating the wheelchair back toward the north corridor like a seasoned soldier.
I stood at the top of the grand staircase, holding Bruno’s leather leash as the old dog watched the men below.
Luca turned slowly, looking up at me.
The chaos had cleared. The traitors had been exposed. The syndicate had survived its greatest existential threat.
Yet as Luca climbed the marble steps toward me, his hazel eyes weren't focused on the victory, the power, or the millions he had just secured.
May you like
They were focused entirely on me.
