Chapter 8 - THE SPEECH THEY TRIED TO STEAL|

At eight-thirty, the ballroom lights dimmed.

A spotlight illuminated the stage.

The orchestra fell silent.

And Lorenzo Moretti stepped toward the microphone with the confidence of a man who believed the evening had already been won.

"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining us."

Applause rolled across the room.

I stood beside Dante near the front, close enough to see Lorenzo's smile.

He looked every inch the generous philanthropist.

Nobody watching him would have guessed that his name appeared in records describing suspicious transfers worth millions.

Nobody would have imagined him discussing the sabotage of his brother's car.

And nobody knew that Agent Pierce had positioned investigators throughout the hotel.

Not even Lorenzo.

"For more than a decade," he continued, "the Moretti Foundation has helped families facing extraordinary challenges."

A large screen behind him displayed photographs of medical research centers, rehabilitation facilities, and smiling patients.

Dante watched without moving.

I could feel the tension radiating from him.

Lorenzo gestured toward the screen.

"Tonight, we celebrate resilience."

I looked down at Dante.

His jaw tightened.

"He's using your story," I whispered.

"He's been using it for years."

Then Lorenzo's expression shifted into practiced sadness.

"As many of you know, my younger brother has faced a difficult recovery."

Several guests turned toward Dante.

Lorenzo continued.

"His courage has inspired us all."

Dante's face remained unreadable.

"But courage also means recognizing when we need others to carry our responsibilities."

My stomach dropped.

The audience listened attentively.

"After careful consultation, our executive committee has developed a new leadership structure designed to protect the foundation's long-term future."

Victoria stood near the stage in her red gown.

She smiled.

Lorenzo raised a folder.

"Tonight, the trustees will consider a resolution appointing an interim executive chair with expanded authority over foundation operations."

Several board members began applauding.

Then Dante spoke.

"No."

It wasn't loud.

But the people nearest us heard.

Heads turned.

Lorenzo hesitated.

Dante moved his wheelchair into the center aisle.

"No, Lorenzo."

The ballroom grew quiet.

Lorenzo smiled nervously.

"Dante, brother, we're delighted you could join us."

"I'm sure you are."

A ripple of uncertain laughter moved through the room.

Lorenzo gripped the microphone.

"Perhaps we can discuss this privately."

"That's what you've been telling me for six years."

Silence fell.

Dante continued toward the stage.

Marcus walked nearby, but he didn't touch the chair.

A technician moved a small cable out of the aisle.

I followed at a respectful distance.

Lorenzo stepped away from the microphone.

"Dante, please."

Dante stopped in front of the stage.

"I have a question."

Lorenzo swallowed.

"Of course."

"Who authorized you to speak on my behalf?"

The entire ballroom seemed to stop breathing.

Lorenzo forced a laugh.

"I'm speaking for the foundation."

"Then answer the question."

A woman near the front whispered to her husband.

A photographer raised his camera.

Lorenzo's smile disappeared.

"As chairman of the executive committee, I have certain responsibilities."

"Responsibilities I delegated while recovering from a serious injury."

"Yes."

"Responsibilities I never surrendered permanently."

Lorenzo's eyes hardened.

"Dante, this isn't appropriate."

"Neither is using my medical history to remove me from an organization I founded."

A collective murmur moved through the crowd.

Victoria hurried toward the stage.

"Dante, you're upset."

He looked at her.

"I'm remarkably calm."

"You're under enormous pressure."

"Then stop adding to it."

Someone near the back of the ballroom applauded.

The sound stopped almost immediately.

Dante turned toward the audience.

"Six years ago, I was injured in a car crash."

The room fell completely silent.

"Afterward, many people helped me."

He paused.

"Some helped because they cared."

His eyes moved toward Evelyn.

She stood near the front table.

"Others helped because they believed I would never be strong enough to question them."

Lorenzo stepped forward.

"That's enough."

Dante looked at him.

"No."

He turned back toward the crowd.

"I want to make something clear."

His voice carried through the ballroom.

"I use a wheelchair."

He paused.

"That fact does not make me less intelligent, less capable of choosing my future, or less entitled to manage my own affairs."

Applause began at one table.

Then another.

But Dante raised his hand.

"I'm not finished."

The room quieted again.

"For six years, I accepted help that sometimes became control."

He glanced at me.

"And recently, someone reminded me that asking for assistance is different from having your choices taken away."

I felt my throat tighten.

He looked back toward Lorenzo.

"Tonight, I am exercising one of those choices."

Lorenzo folded his arms.

"And what choice is that?"

"To reject this proposed resolution."

The audience murmured.

Lorenzo's face reddened.

"The trustees have legal authority to consider it."

"Yes," Dante replied.

"And they have a legal obligation to act in the foundation's best interests."

He looked toward the trustees' table.

"So before anyone votes, I suggest you ask your attorneys whether the financial records you've received are complete."

Victoria went still.

Lorenzo's expression changed.

"What are you implying?"

Dante held his gaze.

"That transparency should begin with the people demanding it from others."

At that moment, Claire Bennett stepped forward.

She carried a thick binder.

Several trustees recognized her.

Claire spoke calmly.

"My name is Claire Bennett, and I represent Dante Moretti."

Lorenzo looked furious.

"This is a private foundation event."

"Yes," Claire replied.

"And my client is an authorized director and founder."

She turned toward the trustees.

"Formal notice has been delivered regarding disputed transactions and potential conflicts of interest."

A board member stood.

"What transactions?"

Claire answered carefully.

"Records indicating that restricted charitable funds may have been transferred to entities with undisclosed relationships to foundation executives."

The room erupted.

Guests whispered.

Reporters began typing.

Lorenzo stepped toward the microphone.

"These are outrageous allegations."

Claire didn't flinch.

"They require investigation, and a preservation notice has been issued."

Victoria whispered something to him.

He ignored her.

Then he pointed toward me.

"This is her doing."

Every face turned.

I felt my heart slam against my ribs.

Lorenzo's voice rose.

"This woman infiltrated my brother's medical care and manipulated him into believing malicious lies."

Dante's expression turned deadly calm.

"Careful."

But Lorenzo continued.

"Anna Foster has a direct connection to a known financial fraud investigation."

I heard someone gasp.

My cheeks burned.

Noah's name was about to become public again.

Lorenzo raised his voice.

"Her brother was investigated for misconduct at HarborPoint Medical."

I stepped forward.

"My brother was never charged."

Lorenzo sneered.

"That doesn't make him innocent."

"No," I replied.

"And an accusation doesn't make him guilty."

The room quieted.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

For two years, I had allowed people to whisper about my family without answering.

I had lost jobs.

Lost friends.

Lost the confidence to defend myself.

But I was finished feeling ashamed of a crime neither Noah nor I had committed.

I stepped closer.

"My credentials were used to release Dante's medical records."

Lorenzo smiled.

"So you admit it."

"I admit someone used my name."

I held up the evidence Sophie had given me.

"And the authentication trail shows that an old account was reactivated through HarborPoint's archive system."

Victoria's face drained of color.

I continued.

"The same system connected to the investigation involving my brother."

Lorenzo's smile disappeared.

"You're making a very serious accusation."

"Yes."

I looked directly at him.

"One that investigators should examine."

Several people raised their phones.

Dante moved beside me.

"Anna doesn't need me to speak for her."

My chest tightened.

"But I will say this."

He looked at the audience.

"I trust her."

The words felt louder than any shout.

Lorenzo stared at him.

"You barely know her."

Dante's expression softened.

"Six weeks."

He paused.

"That's how long she's worked with me."

Lorenzo shook his head.

"And you're willing to risk everything for her?"

Dante looked toward me.

"She never asked me to risk anything."

Then he turned back.

"She asked me to make my own decisions."

For a moment, the ballroom was silent.

Then applause broke out.

Louder this time.

Dante waited until it faded.

"The foundation's work belongs to the patients, researchers, and families who depend on it."

He looked toward the trustees.

"Not to my pride."

He turned toward Lorenzo.

"And certainly not to anyone's private bank account."

Lorenzo looked ready to explode.

But Claire stepped forward before he could speak.

"The proposed vote should be postponed pending independent legal review."

Several trustees began consulting one another.

One elderly board member stood.

"I move that we suspend consideration of the resolution."

Another raised her hand.

"I second."

The chair of the trustees' meeting requested a formal vote.

The motion passed.

The resolution was suspended.

Victoria turned away.

Lorenzo's face became rigid.

But Dante didn't smile.

He simply watched his brother with an expression I couldn't read.

When the orchestra resumed, Marcus approached.

"Boss, Agent Pierce wants to speak with you."

Dante nodded.

"Where?"

"Private conference room."

I followed them through the side doors.

Pierce waited inside with two investigators.

Her expression was grave.

"We've confirmed several of the transactions."

Dante straightened.

"And?"

"The evidence suggests the foundation was used as a conduit for significant financial misconduct."

Noah stood beside her.

His face was pale.

But there was something different about him.

Hope.

Pierce continued.

"There's another development."

"What?" Dante asked.

"The company that received the largest transfer was connected to a contractor involved in your vehicle's maintenance."

Dante went completely still.

I felt my stomach turn.

"Do you have his name?" I asked.

Pierce nodded.

"Yes."

She opened a folder.

The photograph inside showed an older man standing beside a luxury vehicle.

Dante leaned forward.

His expression shattered.

I looked at him.

"Dante?"

He stared at the photograph.

Then whispered, "I know him."

Pierce waited.

Dante's voice trembled.

"That's the man who inspected my car the morning of the crash."

He looked up.

"And Lorenzo told me he'd died three years ago."

Pierce closed the folder.

"He's alive."

The room went silent.

Then she delivered the words that changed everything.

"And he's agreed to testify."
