Chapter 9 - The Extraction

Hazel didn't scream. She didn't hesitate.

She reached behind her, snatched Callum’s heavy brass lighter off the counter, flicked the flame to life, and slammed it directly into the emergency sprinkler sensor built into the kitchen soffit.

The glass bulb shattered.

Instantly, the penthouse’s commercial-grade fire suppression system activated. A torrential deluge of high-pressure water erupted from the ceiling, flooding the room in blinding, deafening sheets of spray.

Simultaneously, the building’s automated emergency protocols engaged: the overhead lights died, plunging the room into darkness broken only by strobing red emergency beacons, and an ear-splitting alarm siren began to wail.

“Cease fire! Secure the suspects!” the lead agent screamed through the chaos, water blinding the tactical team as their weapon lights refracted uselessly against the heavy spray.

Hazel didn't run toward the door. She lunged forward, grabbed Callum’s sleeve, and pulled him toward the private service staircase behind the kitchen pantry—a reinforced escape route she had secretly designed into the building’s architectural permits two years ago.

Callum reacted with the lethal instinct of a seasoned survivor. As Julian tried to block their path, Callum delivered a devastating, straight right punch into the center of Julian’s face. The sickening crunch of breaking cartilage echoed through the alarm bells, and the federal agent collapsed to the wet floor, clutching his shattered nose.

Callum grabbed Hazel’s hand, kicking open the heavy steel fire door, and pulled her into the dark, concrete stairwell.

They sprinted down three flights of stairs, the sound of water and shouting fading above them. Hazel’s emerald dress was soaked, clinging to her skin, her heels long since kicked off on the concrete steps. Callum’s tuxedo was ruined, dripping with black-tinted water from the ceiling pipes.

They reached the sub-basement three—the abandoned subterranean freight rail tunnel that ran beneath the Chicago Loop.

Waiting in the damp, shadowy tunnel was a single, unmarked black Suburban, engine idling quietly in the darkness.

The driver’s door opened. Marco stepped out, a bloodied bandage wrapped around his left bicep, holding a pair of suppressed tactical pistols.

“Boss!” Marco yelled, throwing the rear door open. “The feds have the entire perimeter of the building surrounded! We have three minutes before tactical teams breach the lower tunnels!”

Callum shoved Hazel into the back seat of the vehicle, sliding in directly behind her. “Drive, Marco! Take the freight tunnel south toward Gary!”

Marco slammed the vehicle into gear. The heavy SUV accelerated into the pitch-black railway tunnel, its high-beams cutting through decades of dust and rusted iron, leaving the flashing red sirens of Sullivan Tower behind them.

Inside the rear cabin, Callum and Hazel sat side by side, soaked, bleeding, and gasping for breath.

The silence returned, heavy and electric, broken only by the hum of the tires against the subterranean tracks.

Callum turned his head to look at her.

Water was dripping from the tips of her dark hair, running down her pale collarbone. She looked exhausted, disheveled, and completely ferocious.

“You saved my life,” Callum said, his voice quiet, raw, stripped of all corporate armor and syndicate posturing.

Hazel leaned back against the leather seat, closing her eyes, her chest rising and falling slowly.

“I didn't save your life, Callum,” she whispered, her voice trembling with the delayed shock of what they had just done. “I committed treason against the United States government. I assaulted a federal officer. I destroyed federal evidence.”

She opened her eyes, turning her head to meet his gaze in the dim cabin light.

“I can never go back to Sullivan Enterprise,” she said. “I can never go home to Lincoln Park. I don't have a name anymore. I don't have a life.”

Callum reached out. His large, scarred hand gently took hers, his fingers curling tightly around her cold knuckles.

“You have a life, Hazel,” Callum said, his thumb tracing the back of her hand with an absolute, unshakable reverence. “You have mine.”
