Chapter 14 - The Place Where Emily's Dream Finally Grew|

The greenhouse reopened the following spring.

For months, workers had repaired the cracked windows, strengthened the frame, and replaced damaged flooring after investigators finished documenting the scene.

The building no longer looked abandoned.

Sunlight poured through clean glass.

Flowers filled the shelves.

And outside, a new wooden sign stood beside the garden path.

EMILY MORETTI RESCUE GARDEN

Beneath it were smaller words.

Every lost soul deserves a way home.

Claire stood beside the entrance, staring at the sign.

Her eyes filled.

Samuel joined her.

“She would have loved this.”

Claire nodded.

“I think so too.”

The greenhouse had become part of a larger project.

A peaceful garden where rescued dogs could recover.

A training space for volunteers.

And a place where families could learn about search-and-rescue work.

The Moretti Foundation provided funding.

Independent professionals managed the programs.

Samuel served as a senior training consultant.

And Claire coordinated volunteers and community events.

For the first time in years, Samuel had work that made him proud.

He woke early.

Prepared training plans.

And returned home with stories about energetic puppies who refused to listen.

Claire loved hearing him laugh again.

Dominic arrived shortly before the opening ceremony.

He wore a dark suit with his sleeves rolled up.

The tattoos across his forearms were visible.

Bruno walked beside him.

Slowly.

Carefully.

But with his tail moving.

Claire smiled.

“Look who's here.”

She crouched.

“Hello, Captain.”

Bruno pressed his silver muzzle into her hand.

Dominic watched them.

“He wouldn't let me leave without him.”

Claire laughed.

“Of course not. This is his garden too.”

Dominic looked toward the sign.

His expression softened.

“She would've loved it.”

Claire stood.

“She would.”

For a moment, they looked at each other.

Then Dominic took her hand.

Their relationship had grown quietly.

They'd spent months learning how to be together without allowing the past to control every conversation.

They took walks.

Cooked dinner badly.

Visited animal shelters.

And laughed more than either had expected.

Claire still found it strange that the intimidating Dominic Moretti could become completely helpless when a puppy climbed into his lap.

He insisted it was because the animals were manipulative.

She insisted he was simply softhearted.

He denied it every time.

But he never stopped smiling.

The ceremony began at noon.

Families gathered beneath the spring sunlight.

Volunteers stood beside rescued dogs.

Samuel addressed the crowd first.

He spoke about the importance of training.

About trust.

About listening to animals instead of punishing them for fear.

Then he looked toward Bruno.

“For a long time, people believed this dog had failed.”

His voice trembled.

“But he hadn't.”

The garden grew quiet.

“He remembered where he'd been. He remembered what he'd learned. And when someone finally listened, he helped bring the truth home.”

Claire wiped her eyes.

Samuel smiled.

“That's what good working dogs do.”

Applause filled the garden.

Then Dominic approached the microphone.

For a moment, he looked toward the greenhouse.

“Emily was twelve years old when she died.”

His voice softened.

“She wanted to become a veterinarian. She loved every animal she met, even the ones that tried to bite her.”

The crowd laughed gently.

“She used to say there were no bad dogs. Only frightened dogs and people who hadn't learned how to understand them.”

Claire smiled through her tears.

Dominic continued.

“For years, I couldn't come into this garden.”

He paused.

“I believed staying away meant I was honoring her memory.”

His eyes filled.

“But I was wrong.”

He looked toward Samuel.

“Emily wouldn't have wanted this place locked.”

Then toward Claire.

“She would've wanted it filled with life.”

He stepped away from the microphone.

The crowd applauded.

And as Bruno slowly walked toward the greenhouse, Dominic knelt beside him.

“Ready, Captain?”

The old dog looked up.

Dominic smiled.

“Let's go home.”

Bruno entered the garden.

Samuel followed.

Claire walked beside Dominic.

And for one beautiful moment, the place that had held their worst memories became a place of healing.

Later that evening, after the guests had left, Dominic asked Claire to meet him beneath the old oak tree.

The setting sun turned the greenhouse windows gold.

Bruno slept nearby.

Claire approached.

“Dominic?”

He smiled.

“There's something I want to ask you.”

She laughed softly.

“That sounds serious.”

“It is.”

He took her hands.

For a moment, he looked nervous.

Then he reached into his jacket.

Claire stopped breathing.

A small velvet box rested in his palm.

Dominic slowly knelt.

“Claire Bennett.”

Her eyes filled.

“You came into my life when I thought the truth had been buried forever.”

His voice trembled.

“You helped me find my sister's story. You helped your father reclaim his name. And you taught me that kindness can be stronger than fear.”

Claire began crying.

Dominic smiled through his own tears.

“I don't want to spend the rest of my life living in the past.”

He opened the box.

Inside was a beautiful diamond ring.

“I want to build a future with you.”

Claire covered her mouth.

“Will you marry me?”

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Then she laughed through her tears.

“Yes.”

Dominic's eyes widened.

“Yes?”

“Yes, Dominic.”

He stood and pulled her into his arms.

Bruno lifted his head.

His tail thumped once against the grass.

Samuel, who had been watching from the greenhouse doorway, began crying.

And as Dominic kissed Claire beneath the oak tree, the old German shepherd closed his eyes again.

As though his work was finally done.
