Chapter 6 - The Heat of the Dark

The darkness of the wine cellar was thick, smelling of aged oak, dark grapes, and the crisp, masculine scent of Alexander’s cedarwood cologne.

He stood so close his chest was pressed against mine, his towering frame completely obscuring me in the shadowed corner. His hand remained over my lips, his thumb calloused and warm against my skin. Outside the arched wooden doorway, the sound of Julian’s footsteps paused, lingering in the kitchen for three agonizing seconds before retreating down the main corridor.

When the footsteps faded completely, Alexander slowly lowered his hand.

Neither of us moved.

His breathing was slow, deep, and measured, but up close, I could feel the tension vibrating through his broad shoulders like coiled steel. In the faint amber light filtering through the decorative iron grating of the door, his gray eyes were burning with an intensity that stole the oxygen from my lungs.

“Did you hear them?” I whispered, my voice trembling, my back pressed flat against the cool stone wall.

“I heard,” Alexander replied, his voice barely a low rumble against my ear.

“Alexander, they’re trying to destroy your mother,” I said, looking up into his face, desperate to make him understand. “Victoria and Julian... they’re manipulating her medical panel. They want to declare her incompetent to take her voting shares!”

“I know,” he said quietly.

I blinked, confused. “You know? And you haven't stopped them?”

Alexander stepped closer, closing the last fraction of an inch between us until his hand came up to rest against the stone wall beside my head. The raw, magnetic presence of the man was overwhelming.

“Julian has been funneling municipal bonds through shell companies in Belize for eighteen months,” Alexander murmured, his gaze dropping to my lips before rising back to my eyes. “I’ve had forensic accountants tracking every dollar. But to prove criminal fraud before the Securities and Exchange Commission, I needed them to commit the final overt act—the attempt to alter the family trust documents.”

“You’re using your mother as bait?” I whispered, a sudden spike of anger flashing through my chest.

“Never,” Alexander said fiercely, his hand moving to gently cup the side of my neck, his thumb tracing the soft curve of my jawline. The touch was so tender, so completely uncharacteristic of the ruthless billionaire the media described, that my knees went weak. “I brought you here to protect her, Emily. Because I knew that as long as you were beside her, no one could touch her. You have a fire in you that terrifies people like Victoria.”

My breath hitched. The space between our faces seemed to evaporate.

“Alexander...” I breathed.

“You don't belong in this world of snakes, Emily,” he murmured, his thumb caressing my lower lip with an agonizing, breathless hesitation. “You’re honest. You’re brave. And every day I see you with my mother... all I can think about is how empty this house was before you walked into it.”

He leaned down.

For one heart-stopping second, his lips brushed against mine—soft, warm, questioning, filled with a deep, suppressed hunger that sent a tidal wave of heat crashing through my veins. I leaned into him, my fingers instinctively curling into the soft cotton of his shirt.

The kiss deepened, possessive and desperate, stripping away the boundaries of employer and employee, billionaire and waitress, leaving only the raw, undeniable gravity pulling us together.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, his breathing was ragged.

“Tomorrow night is the Founders’ Gala at the Riverwalk Hotel,” Alexander whispered against my skin. “The entire Texas business council will be there. Julian and Victoria plan to make their move tomorrow evening.”

May you like

He looked into my eyes, his gray gaze unyielding.

“I need you by my side, Emily. Not as a companion. As my equal.”
