Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of a Scandal

The morning after the gala, the news exploded across the country.

HOUSTON CHRONICLE: CARTER EMPIRE SHAKEN BY MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD SCANDAL.

TEXAS MONTHLY: THE FALL OF VICTORIA VANCE.

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: WHO IS EMILY MORALES? THE WAITRESS WHO SAVED THE CARTER FORTUNE.

Reporters and paparazzi swarmed the gates of Monte Vista within hours. Flashbulbs went off whenever a delivery van entered; news helicopters circled the estate’s ridgeline like vultures.

Inside the house, the atmosphere was a whirlwind of emergency board meetings, legal filings, and PR management. Alexander spent sixteen hours a day on encrypted phone calls, stabilizing the company’s stock prices and appointing an independent supervisory board to ensure the riverfront project went forward ethically.

I stayed in the garden suite, feeling increasingly like an intruder.

Every time I looked at the news, my face was splashed across the screen—photos of me carrying trays at Laurel Corner Café juxtaposed with photos of me in the midnight-blue silk gown at the gala. Gossip columns debated whether I was a heroic Cinderella or a calculating social climber who had played the long game to seduce a billionaire.

On Thursday evening, Eleanor found me sitting alone on the stone steps of the rose garden, clutching my canvas backpack.

“You’re thinking of leaving, aren't you, Emily?” Eleanor asked gently, sitting down beside me on the warm stone step, leaning her walking cane against her knee.

I looked down at my hands. “Eleanor, the press is calling me an opportunist. They’re saying Alexander used this scandal to break his engagement with Victoria for a girl off the street. If I stay, it damages his reputation. It damages the company.”

“My son doesn't give a damn about the company’s reputation, child,” Eleanor said firmly, wrapping her arm around my shoulders. “And neither do I. What Alexander cares about is you. Have you seen the way he looks at you when you walk into the room? The boy hasn't smiled like that since his father was alive.”

“I’m from a different world, Eleanor,” I whispered, tears burning the back of my throat. “I don't know how to navigate boardrooms or charity galas. I know how to scrub floors, make soup, and ride a sputtering motorcycle. What happens when the excitement of the rescue fades, and he realizes I’m just an ordinary girl?”

“You are anything but ordinary, Emily Morales,” a deep, commanding voice spoke from the terrace above.

I looked up.

Alexander was standing at the top of the stone stairs, his suit jacket discarded, his shirt sleeves rolled up, looking tired but fiercely resolute.

He descended the stairs slowly, his eyes locked onto mine, until he stood two feet away.

“Eleanor,” Alexander said softly to his mother. “Arthur is waiting in the conservatory with your tea.”

Eleanor smiled knowingly, kissed my cheek, and walked up the stairs with Arthur’s assistance, leaving the two of us alone in the twilight.

Alexander knelt on the stone step before me, bringing his gaze level with mine.

“You’re not running away from me, Emily,” he said, his voice thick with unyielding conviction. “I spent forty-one years looking for something real in this world of plastic smiles and signed contracts. I found it in you. And I am not letting you walk out of my life because of what some tabloid writes.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, flat wooden box, placing it in my lap.

“What is this?” I asked, my voice trembling.

“Open it,” he murmured.
