Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

In the absolute darkness of the warehouse, violence wasn't chaotic; it was surgical.

Green night-vision flares erupted near the south wall. The stuttering, rhythmic bark of suppressed automatic weapons echoed through the cavernous space like muffled thunderclaps.

Thwip-thwip-thwip!

Mave pressed her back against the corrugated steel of the container, her hand instantly reaching behind her waist to draw the heavy combat knife Vincent had given her. She could hear the wet, heavy thuds of bodies hitting the concrete, the terrified shouts of Volkov’s mercenaries screaming in Russian, completely blind and hopelessly outmatched.

“Flank them! Flank them!” a guard shrieked from the catwalks above.

A shadow moved across the darkness with terrifying speed.

It wasn't a soldier. It was an apex predator unleashed in his native environment.

Vincent materialized beneath the catwalk. He fired two rapid shots upward through the steel grating. A scream followed, cut short by the sickening crash of a body plummeting forty feet to the concrete floor.

“Julian!” Mave yelled, scrambling across the damp floor on her hands and knees toward the central pillar.

Through the chaotic strobe of muzzle flashes, she saw Nikolai Volkov staggering toward Julian’s tied form, his left hand drawing a heavy silver revolver from his waistband, his right arm dangling uselessly from his shattered shoulder.

“If I go down,” Volkov snarled through bloody teeth, “the bloodline ends!”

He raised the revolver, aiming directly at the back of Julian’s head.

Mave didn't think. She didn't calculate odds or run risk assessments. The administrative lead who had spent her life behind a mahogany desk vanished, replaced by pure, primal survival instinct.

She launched herself forward, driving the full weight of her body into Volkov’s side.

They crashed to the concrete in a tangle of limbs. The revolver discharged with a deafening roar, the heavy bullet sparking harmlessly off the steel pillar inches above Julian’s hair.

Volkov roared in fury, his good arm swinging around like a club, his fist catching Mave across the jaw.

The blow sent her sprawling onto her back, blood filling her mouth. Volkov scrambled on top of her, pinning her to the floor with his knees, his bloody fingers clawing at her throat once more.

“Die, bitch!” he hissed, raising the silver revolver to press the freezing muzzle directly between her eyes.

Mave’s right hand whipped upward.

She drove the ceramic blade of the combat knife deep into the soft junction of Volkov’s neck and collarbone.

Volkov froze.

His pale eyes widened in shock, blood instantly bubbling over his lips. He looked down at the hilt protruding from his flesh, then into Mave’s eyes, finding no fear, no mercy—only cold, defiant survival.

A heavy boot collided with Volkov’s ribcage with bone-crushing force, sending his dying body flying off her, skidding across the blood-slicked concrete.

Vincent stood over him.

He didn't hesitate. He didn't offer a monologue. Vincent leveled his customized sidearm and fired three hollow-point rounds directly into Volkov’s chest, ending the enforcer’s life before his body stopped twitching.

The warehouse went dead silent.

The only sound was the drip of water from the rusted rafters and the ragged, heaving breaths of the survivors.

Leo’s flashlight beam cut through the smoke, illuminating the carnage. Seven enemy combatants were down; none were breathing. Vincent’s tier-one team was already cutting the zip-ties from Julian’s wrists, lifting the younger brother onto a portable tactical stretcher.

“He’s alive, Boss,” Leo called out, his voice tight. “Head trauma, but his pulse is strong. We’re moving him to the mobile surgical unit now.”

Vincent didn't look at his brother. He didn't acknowledge Leo.

He dropped his smoking weapon onto the concrete and dropped to his knees beside Mave.

His hands were shaking—the ruthless syndicate boss, trembling like a child—as he gathered her into his arms, lifting her off the freezing floor and pulling her tightly against his chest.

“I have you,” Vincent choked out, burying his face into the crook of her neck, his body shuddering with an overwhelming, desperate relief. “I have you. It’s over. You’re safe.”

Mave buried her face into his blood-splattered tactical vest, her fingers clinging to the heavy nylon straps. The adrenaline was draining from her system, leaving her shivering violently in the cold warehouse air, but inside the circle of his arms, she felt an intoxicating, terrifying warmth.

“I killed him, Vincent,” she whispered, tears finally breaking through her shock, hot against his collar. “I killed him.”

Vincent pulled back just enough to frame her bruised face in his large, calloused hands. His dark eyes were burning with an intensity so profound, so reverent, that it stole the breath from her lungs.

“You survived,” Vincent corrected fiercely, his thumbs brushing the tears and blood from her cheeks. “You protected my family. And you proved to every bastard in this city that you are far more dangerous than any soldier I command.”

May you like

He leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers as the sirens of their extraction convoy began to wail in the foggy distance.

“Now,” Vincent murmured, his voice laced with dark, possessive certainty, “we go home and finish what we started.”
