Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

Dawn broke over Manhattan not with golden sunlight, but with a bruised, slate-gray gloom that mirrored the exhaustion settling over the top floor of the Costa Tower.
Julian was resting in the penthouse’s private medical suite, heavily sedated but stabilized, with two private trauma surgeons monitoring his vitals around the clock. The threat from the Black Sea Cartel had been severed at the root; Nikolai Volkov’s body was currently being processed through an industrial incinerator in an undisclosed facility in New Jersey, leaving no trace of the night’s violence.
Yet inside Vincent’s private quarters, the air was suffocating with a different kind of tension.
Mave stood in the master bathroom, staring at her reflection in the gilded mirror under the harsh vanity lights.
A dark purple contusion wrapped around the left side of her neck where Volkov’s fingers had crushed her throat. Her split lip had crusted over, and a deep bruise stained her jaw. She had scrubbed the blood from her skin beneath a scalding shower until her flesh was raw, yet she could still feel the phantom weight of the knife sinking into Volkov’s collarbone.
She had crossed an invisible threshold. The quiet, orderly life of spreadsheets and balance sheets was gone forever. She was no longer just an observer of the Costa Syndicate; she was baptized in its blood.
The bathroom door creaked open.
Vincent stood in the doorway, wearing clean dark sweatpants and a black henley shirt. He looked hollowed out, dark circles bruising the skin beneath his eyes, yet his gaze remained locked on her with predatory focus.
He walked over to where she stood, stopping behind her. His reflection towered over hers in the glass.
Slowly, carefully, Vincent reached out. His hands rested on her bare shoulders, his touch radiating heat through the light silk robe she wore.
“You’re shaking,” he murmured.
“I took a man’s life, Vincent.”
“You took the life of a monster who was about to execute a paralyzed boy,” Vincent countered softly, his hands sliding down her arms to cover her trembling hands. “You did what was necessary to survive. Never apologize for surviving.”
Mave turned within the circle of his arms, looking up into his dark, brooding face. “And what happens now? When the sun comes up, do I go back to managing your freight schedules? Do we pretend last night was just another business dispute?”
Vincent’s jaw tightened. He reached up, his fingers gently tracing the dark bruise encircling her throat, his eyes darkening with a mixture of raw pain and possessive hunger.
“There is no going back, Mave,” he said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, intimate register. “You know too much. You’ve seen too much. But more than that... I cannot let you walk away from me. Not anymore.”
“Are you keeping me prisoner, Vincent?” she challenged, her voice catching as his body pressed closer, pinning her against the marble edge of the vanity.
“I am keeping you alive,” he whispered, his lips brushing against the sensitive skin just below her ear, sending a jolt of pure electricity spiraling straight down to her core. “And I am keeping you where you belong. By my side.”
Mave gasped as his hands gripped her waist, lifting her effortlessly onto the marble counter. His mouth found hers with an intensity that eclipsed the trauma of the night, replacing fear with an all-consuming, desperate passion. She wrapped her legs around his hips, pulling him flush against her, surrendering completely to the dark gravity that had pulled them toward this moment for three long years.
Every touch was a claim; every kiss was a vow forged in blood and survival. For hours, the world outside ceased to exist, replaced only by the heat of their skin and the whispered promises exchanged in the shadows of the bedroom.
It was mid-afternoon when reality shattered the sanctuary.
The private elevator chime echoed through the penthouse, followed by the urgent, hurried footsteps of Leo approaching the master suite.
Vincent pulled back, his eyes clearing from the haze of passion as a heavy knock sounded on the bedroom door.
“Boss,” Leo called out, his voice laced with an anxiety that immediately set Mave’s nerves on fire. “We have a catastrophic breach.”
Vincent pulled on his pants and stepped to the door, opening it just enough to reveal his profile. “What is it?”
“The Federal Bureau of Investigation,” Leo said, holding up an encrypted tablet displaying a live news broadcast. “Director Vance just announced a federal grand jury indictment against the Costa Syndicate. Rico charges. Wire fraud. Maritime smuggling.”
Leo swallowed hard, his eyes flicking toward the bed where Mave was pulling the sheets over her chest.
“And Boss... they didn't name you as the primary target.”
May you like
Vincent’s voice turned deadly. “Who did they name?”
“Mave,” Leo whispered. “Her signature is on every single bill of lading from the Newark terminal for the past eighteen months. The Feds are calling her the syndicate’s master financier. There is an active federal warrant out for her arrest. Every port, airport, and bridge in the Tri-State area is crawling with federal marshals.”
