Chapter 12 - THE CONFESSION ELENA WAS AFRAID TO MAKE|

Elena Moretti looked different in the hospital.

The harsh bedroom lighting of the mansion had made her seem almost ghostlike.

Now, sitting beside a window in a private recovery room, she looked more human.

Still pale.

Still painfully thin.

But alive.

A soft blue blanket covered her legs.

Fresh flowers stood beside the bed.

And Isabella sat next to her mother, carefully brushing her hair.

“Does that hurt, Mommy?”

Elena smiled.

“No, Stellina.”

Isabella concentrated.

“Emily says you have to be gentle when brushing tangles.”

“She sounds very wise.”

Isabella nodded seriously.

“She is.”

I stood in the doorway with Luca.

He watched his daughter for a long moment.

Then his wife looked up.

“Luca.”

He entered slowly.

“Hello, Elena.”

She smiled faintly.

“You look terrible.”

He almost laughed.

“I've had a difficult week.”

“So have I.”

Their eyes met.

Something passed between them.

Eighteen months of grief, anger, longing, and unanswered questions.

Nothing could repair all of it in one conversation.

But they were finally in the same room.

That mattered.

Luca knelt beside Isabella.

“Bella, would you like to go downstairs with Emily and choose something from the hospital café?”

Isabella looked toward her mother.

“Will you still be here?”

Elena's face softened.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Isabella studied her carefully.

Then kissed her cheek.

“Okay.”

I took her hand.

As we walked toward the door, Elena called my name.

“Emily?”

I turned.

“Thank you.”

I shook my head.

“You don't have to—”

“Yes,” she interrupted gently.

“I do.”

She looked at Isabella.

“You gave me back the chance to be her mother.”

I couldn't answer.

So I simply nodded.

Downstairs, Isabella chose a chocolate muffin and a carton of milk.

She insisted on buying a second muffin for Elena.

“Mommy used to love chocolate.”

I smiled.

“Then that's a wonderful idea.”

We sat beside a large window overlooking the hospital garden.

For the first time in days, Isabella seemed relaxed.

She told me about school.

About a friend named Hannah.

About her favorite teacher.

Then she became quiet.

“Emily?”

“Yes?”

“Do you think Daddy's going to marry Vanessa?”

I nearly dropped my coffee.

“No, sweetheart.”

“Are you sure?”

“Very sure.”

She seemed relieved.

“Good.”

She picked at her muffin.

“Vanessa said Mommy didn't love us enough to stay.”

My heart tightened.

“That wasn't true.”

“I know now.”

She looked up.

“But for a long time, I thought maybe it was.”

I reached across the table and held her hand.

“Your mother loved you every day she was away.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she kept trying to come home.”

Isabella nodded slowly.

Then she whispered something that stayed with me.

“Sometimes I thought if I was a better girl, Mommy would come back.”

I felt tears rise.

I moved closer.

“Bella, children don't have to earn their parents' love by being perfect.”

She looked at me.

“Really?”

“Really.”

She leaned against my shoulder.

“I wish someone had told me that sooner.”

Upstairs, Luca was finally hearing a truth he'd never expected.

Later, Elena told me what happened during their conversation.

She had gone to meet Dominic eighteen months earlier because he claimed he could provide evidence against Victor Rinaldi.

She suspected Victor was stealing money from the legitimate businesses.

At the time, she didn't know Dominic was involved.

“He told me he'd help expose the corruption,” she explained.

“He said he wanted Isabella to grow up in a safer family.”

She laughed bitterly.

“I believed him.”

Luca asked why she hadn't told him about the meeting.

“Because we were arguing,” Elena admitted.

“You thought I was being reckless by investigating your father's records.”

Luca lowered his eyes.

“I remember.”

“I wanted to prove I was right.”

She paused.

“And I was afraid you'd warn Dominic.”

The words hurt him.

But he didn't deny them.

Because back then, he would have warned his uncle.

He would have believed Dominic.

And Elena knew it.

“What happened at the meeting?” Luca asked.

Elena stared at her hands.

“Dominic took me to a private office.”

“Victor was there.”

“So was Vanessa.”

Luca's face hardened.

“Vanessa?”

Elena nodded.

“She wasn't your fiancée then.”

“I barely knew her.”

“But she knew everything about you.”

Elena explained that Dominic showed her documents and demanded to know where she'd hidden the financial records.

When she refused, Victor took her phone.

She tried to escape.

Then someone administered medication that left her disoriented and unable to resist.

“I remember waking up in a medical room,” she whispered.

“They told me I'd been injured in a car accident.”

“Every time I questioned them, they said I was confused.”

Her eyes filled.

“For months, I didn't know what was real.”

Luca took her hand.

“I'm so sorry.”

Elena looked at him.

“Sorry isn't going to fix what happened.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“I need you to understand something.”

“What?”

“I didn't survive because I believed you'd come for me.”

He winced.

She continued.

“I survived because I believed Isabella needed me.”

Tears filled Luca's eyes.

“I understand.”

Elena shook her head.

“Not yet.”

She moved her hand away.

“You have to become a different man before we can decide what happens to our marriage.”

The words were painful.

But they were honest.

Luca nodded.

“I'll do whatever it takes.”

Elena looked at him.

“Don't do it to win me back.”

“Do it because it's right.”

He remained silent.

Then he said, “I will.”

Their conversation continued for almost an hour.

Elena revealed that Dominic intended to gain control of the Moretti family's legitimate assets through Vanessa's marriage to Luca.

Once married, Vanessa would have been positioned to influence financial decisions and gain access to sensitive documents.

Dominic planned to push Luca out of the organization by exposing selected crimes while presenting himself as the family's responsible successor.

“And what about you?” Luca asked.

Elena looked away.

“I don't think they intended to keep me alive much longer.”

Luca went pale.

“Why?”

“Because I was remembering too much.”

She swallowed.

“Vanessa told me my treatment would change after the wedding.”

“She said I wouldn't have to worry about anything anymore.”

The meaning was unmistakable.

Luca reached for her hand again.

This time, Elena let him hold it.

A knock interrupted them.

Detective Bennett entered.

She had come to ask Elena about Dominic's latest message.

Elena listened carefully.

Then her expression changed.

“He wants you to think I betrayed you.”

Luca frowned.

“What?”

“That's why he's telling you to ask about the meeting.”

“He wants you to blame me for trusting him.”

Bennett nodded.

“Do you have any information that might help locate him?”

Elena thought for a moment.

Then she sat upright.

“Yes.”

Luca leaned closer.

“What?”

“Dominic has a place he visits when he's frightened.”

“A property?” Bennett asked.

Elena nodded.

“It's connected to his childhood.”

“He once told me it was the only place his brother couldn't control.”

Luca stared at her.

“The old lakeside house.”

Elena nodded.

“That's what he called it.”

Luca stood.

“My grandfather owned a house near Lake Geneva.”

“Dominic used to go there after fights with my father.”

Bennett immediately contacted investigators.

But Elena grabbed Luca's arm before he could leave.

“There's something else.”

“What?”

“Dominic isn't alone.”

Luca froze.

“Who is with him?”

Elena swallowed.

“The doctor.”

“Which doctor?”

“The man who supervised my medication.”

She looked toward Detective Bennett.

“His name is Dr. Adrian Keller.”

Bennett wrote it down.

Elena continued.

“He told Vanessa that after the wedding, there would be no reason to keep me conscious.”

Luca's expression turned to stone.

Then Elena whispered:

“And Luca, Keller was your father's physician.”

The room went silent.

“He's the man who signed Giovanni's death certificate.”

For the first time, the entire conspiracy became horrifyingly clear.

May you like

Dominic hadn't simply betrayed his brother and stolen Elena's life.

He had spent years using the same trusted doctor to destroy anyone who stood in his way.
