Chapter 14 - THE LAST BETRAYAL OF DOMINIC MORETTI|

The warehouse had once been the heart of Giovanni Moretti's business empire.
It stood beside an old freight railway, surrounded by cracked pavement and rusting metal fences.
Decades earlier, trucks had arrived there day and night.
Now its loading bays were empty.
Its windows were covered with dust.
And inside, Dominic Moretti was preparing to face the nephew he'd spent years manipulating.
But Luca wasn't going to the warehouse alone.
He wasn't going in at all until investigators had assessed the situation.
Detective Bennett coordinated with the appropriate law enforcement teams.
Negotiators established contact.
Officers secured the surrounding area.
And everyone involved understood that Dominic might be desperate enough to hurt himself or someone else.
Luca waited nearby with Bennett.
I remained at the hospital with Margaret, Elena, and Isabella.
That was the arrangement.
At least, it was supposed to be.
Then my phone rang.
An unknown number.
I showed it to the officer assigned to our hospital room.
He immediately contacted Bennett, who instructed us to let the call go to a recorded voicemail.
A message appeared moments later.
Dominic's voice filled the room.
“Emily Carter.”
I felt Margaret grip my arm.
“I knew your grandmother before you were born.”
He paused.
“She was a remarkable woman.”
His tone made my skin crawl.
“Remarkably stubborn.”
Another pause.
“She could have saved Giovanni.”
I stared at the screen.
“But she chose to protect herself.”
The message ended.
I looked at Margaret.
“That's not true.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
But Dominic had planted the question he wanted me to ask.
Why hadn't Rosa gone to the police immediately?
Why had she kept the recording hidden for years?
I thought of the letter.
If Luca has become the man his mother hoped he would be, tell him his father wanted a different future.
Rosa hadn't hidden the truth because she was indifferent.
She had feared that giving the evidence to the wrong person could lead to more deaths.
Still, I wanted answers.
I called Detective Bennett.
She listened carefully.
Then said, “Emily, Dominic may be trying to create conflict between you and Luca.”
“I know.”
“He's running out of control.”
I swallowed.
“Does that mean he's desperate?”
“Possibly.”
“Could that make him more dangerous?”
“Yes.”
Her honesty frightened me.
But I appreciated it.
“Please stay at the hospital,” she continued.
“We'll keep you informed.”
I agreed.
Then I sat beside Margaret.
For a long time, neither of us spoke.
Finally, she took my hand.
“Your grandmother made mistakes.”
I looked at her.
“Do you think she should have told someone sooner?”
Margaret sighed.
“Maybe.”
“She lived with that question until she died.”
I stared at the floor.
“She never told me.”
“Because she didn't want you carrying her guilt.”
I leaned against my mother's shoulder.
“I wish she'd trusted me.”
Margaret kissed my hair.
“She did trust you.”
“She left you the truth.”
The words stayed with me.
An hour later, Luca called.
His voice sounded strained.
“Emily?”
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.”
“What's happening?”
“Negotiators are speaking with Dominic.”
I closed my eyes.
“Did he say anything about Grandma?”
“He tried.”
“What did he say?”
Luca hesitated.
“He claims Rosa could have prevented my father's death.”
I felt a painful tightening in my chest.
“Do you believe him?”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
I swallowed.
“Why not?”
“Because my father made his own decisions.”
Luca's voice grew quiet.
“He chose to confront Dominic.”
“Rosa begged him not to.”
I remembered the letter.
Luca continued.
“Dominic wants us to blame the people who tried to help.”
“That's what he did to Elena.”
“And that's what he's trying to do to you.”
I closed my eyes.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For believing her.”
Luca was silent for a moment.
Then he answered.
“I should have learned to believe people like Rosa a long time ago.”
The call ended.
And for the first time, I felt that Giovanni's final wish might actually come true.
Luca was becoming a different man.
Not through promises.
Through choices.
At the warehouse, negotiators had persuaded Dominic to release a young maintenance worker who had been unexpectedly present when he entered the building.
The worker emerged unharmed.
That was the first victory.
Then Dominic agreed to speak directly with Luca by telephone.
Detective Bennett remained beside him.
The call was recorded under the investigators' established procedures.
“Hello, Uncle.”
Luca's voice was steady.
Dominic laughed.
“Still calling me that?”
“You're my father's brother.”
“Your father was weak.”
Luca remained silent.
“Giovanni wanted to destroy everything our family built.”
“He wanted to surrender to people who hated us.”
“He wanted to throw away generations of power.”
Luca answered quietly.
“He wanted to stop hurting people.”
Dominic scoffed.
“That's what Elena taught you to say?”
“No.”
Luca looked toward the warehouse.
“That's what my daughter taught me.”
There was a pause.
Then Dominic's voice sharpened.
“Your daughter would have been better off with Vanessa.”
Luca's jaw tightened.
“You locked her mother in a room.”
“Vanessa handled the details.”
“You knew.”
Dominic laughed bitterly.
“I knew Elena was a problem.”
“She had evidence that could ruin everything.”
“So you decided she didn't deserve her freedom?”
“I decided the family mattered more.”
Luca closed his eyes.
“That's what you've never understood.”
“What?”
“A family isn't something you own.”
There was silence.
Then Dominic spoke.
“Your father said something similar.”
Luca waited.
“He said he'd rather lose the empire than lose his son.”
Dominic's voice trembled slightly.
“He told me there was still time to become a better man.”
I later learned that Luca lowered his head when he heard those words.
Because they were exactly what Giovanni had said on the recording Rosa preserved.
Dominic continued.
“I told him kindness would get him killed.”
“Then you killed him,” Luca answered.
The line went silent.
For several seconds, only faint background noise could be heard.
Then Dominic whispered.
“You sound just like him.”
Luca swallowed.
“Maybe that's not such a terrible thing.”
Dominic began crying.
It wasn't a dramatic sound.
It was the ragged, exhausted sobbing of a man who had spent his entire life convincing himself that power made him right.
Finally, he spoke.
“I never meant for Isabella to be hurt.”
Luca's expression hardened.
“But she was.”
“I never meant for Elena to suffer so long.”
“But she did.”
“I only wanted the ledger.”
“And you destroyed lives trying to get it.”
Dominic fell silent.
Then Luca said something the older man hadn't expected.
“I'm not coming there to punish you.”
Dominic breathed heavily.
“Then why are you talking to me?”
“Because I want you to surrender.”
“Why would I do that?”
“Because it's over.”
Luca looked at Bennett.
“The evidence is in police custody.”
“Keller is cooperating.”
“Victor has been detained.”
“And Vanessa's story is falling apart.”
Dominic laughed weakly.
“You think you can walk away from everything?”
“No.”
Luca's answer was immediate.
“I'll answer for what I've done too.”
A long silence followed.
Then Dominic whispered:
“Your father would have been proud of you.”
Luca's eyes filled.
“I wish he'd lived long enough to tell me himself.”
Several minutes later, Dominic agreed to come out.
Investigators gave him instructions.
The warehouse door slowly opened.
An old man emerged with his hands visible.
For the first time in decades, Dominic Moretti had no guards, no lawyers standing between him and the truth, and no powerful brother to blame.
He surrendered peacefully.
The nightmare was finally beginning to end.
But one final truth emerged after his arrest.
Investigators recovered the remainder of Giovanni's video recording.
In it, Giovanni spoke directly to Luca.
“My son, I know you're angry with me.”
“I know I taught you things a father should never teach his child.”
He paused.
“I cannot undo my mistakes.”
“But I hope you won't repeat them.”
His voice grew softer.
“Elena sees goodness in you that I was too foolish to encourage.”
“If you love her, listen when she tells you the truth.”
Another pause.
“And if you ever have children, give them the one thing I never gave you.”
Luca watched the screen with tears running down his face.
Giovanni looked directly into the camera.
“Give them a home where nobody has to be afraid.”
The video ended.
And the man who'd once controlled Chicago through fear finally understood what his father had been trying to tell him.
