Chapter 14 - The Last Stand at Harbor House|

The sun had barely risen when Sadi arrived outside Harbor House.

Cold mist drifted across the waterfront.

Two enormous construction vehicles stood behind temporary metal fencing.

Several workers were unloading equipment.

A security guard blocked the sidewalk.

"Ma'am, this is a restricted area."

Sadi looked past him.

The faded brick building stood exactly where it always had.

Its windows were dark.

Its front steps were empty.

But in her mind, she could still hear children's laughter drifting from the kitchen.

She could still smell Gloria's vegetable soup.

She could still remember the first night she had arrived with nowhere to sleep.

"You can't demolish this building."

The guard crossed his arms.

"Take it up with the owner."

"I intend to."

Sadi lifted her phone and called Elena.

Her attorney had already contacted the court and the city authorities.

The injunction remained in effect.

No demolition was permitted.

But Gerald Vale had apparently instructed the contractors to proceed under a questionable emergency authorization.

Sadi walked toward the fence.

A foreman approached her.

"Lady, you need to move."

She held up a copy of the court order.

"Have you seen this?"

He glanced at it.

"That's not my problem."

"It becomes your problem if you knowingly violate it."

The foreman hesitated.

Behind Sadi, several cars began arriving.

Gloria stepped out of the first one.

Hannah Mercer emerged from the next.

Then came Nina, Chloe, Miguel, and dozens of volunteers.

They carried copies of the court order and signs calling for Harbor House to be protected.

Local reporters had also been notified.

Within minutes, cameras surrounded the entrance.

Sadi had not asked anyone to threaten the workers.

She had not called Roman's private security force to settle the dispute.

She had called witnesses.

And she had brought the law with her.

Gerald Vale arrived shortly afterward.

He stepped from his luxury sedan wearing an expensive black overcoat.

Trevor followed several steps behind.

Both men stopped when they saw the crowd.

Gerald's face hardened.

"What is this circus?"

Sadi stepped forward.

"A building you don't have permission to demolish."

Gerald glanced toward the cameras.

"Mrs. Voss, you're interfering with an emergency safety operation."

"Then show everyone the valid authorization."

He smiled coldly.

"My attorneys have handled the necessary paperwork."

Elena arrived at that moment.

She walked directly toward Gerald.

"Then your attorneys can explain why the city has no record of approving demolition."

Gerald's smile faltered.

Trevor leaned toward him.

"We should leave."

Gerald ignored him.

"This building is dangerous."

Sadi looked at the workers.

"Then nobody should enter until the city determines what's safe."

She raised her voice.

"But that doesn't give a private developer permission to destroy evidence while a court order protects the property."

Several workers stepped away from the equipment.

The foreman began making a phone call.

Gerald's face turned red.

"Do you have any idea how much money is at stake?"

Sadi met his eyes.

"That's the only question you've cared about from the beginning."

He stepped closer.

"You think you're better than me because you married Roman Voss?"

Sadi shook her head.

"No."

She glanced toward the shelter.

"I think people matter more than property."

Gerald laughed bitterly.

"That's what poor people tell themselves."

Sadi felt the old familiar sting.

The contempt.

The certainty that money made some people more human than others.

She remembered Trevor saying almost the same thing inside the boutique.

But this time, she was not alone on a marble floor.

She was standing in front of dozens of people who believed in something beyond wealth.

"Maybe that's why you never understood this place," she said.

Gerald's expression darkened.

"You've made a very serious mistake."

A familiar voice answered from behind the crowd.

"No, Gerald."

Roman Voss stepped onto the sidewalk.

He wore a dark navy suit and a charcoal coat.

Arthur walked beside him.

Roman stopped next to Sadi.

"She hasn't."

Gerald stared at him.

"You should be worrying about your own investigation."

"I am."

Roman looked toward the construction equipment.

"That's why every legitimate record my companies possess has been made available to investigators."

Gerald's face tightened.

Roman continued.

"And every employee involved in unlawful conduct will have to answer for it."

Trevor looked suddenly ill.

Gerald took a step backward.

"You're bluffing."

Roman shook his head.

"Not this time."

Moments later, police vehicles arrived.

Detective Reynolds stepped out with several officers and a city building official.

The official examined the worksite documents.

Then she instructed the foreman to halt all activity.

The emergency authorization was not valid for demolition.

And the court's injunction remained enforceable.

The machines fell silent.

An extraordinary quiet settled over the street.

Gerald began shouting at his attorneys over the phone.

But this time, nobody seemed frightened of his voice.

Detective Reynolds approached him.

"Mr. Vale, we have a warrant for your arrest."

Gerald froze.

The detective continued.

He was facing allegations involving conspiracy, fraudulent property transactions, witness intimidation, and obstruction of the investigation.

Further charges would depend on the evidence and the decisions of prosecutors.

Gerald looked toward Roman.

"You did this."

Roman's expression remained calm.

"No."

He glanced toward Sadi.

"The people you tried to silence did."

As officers escorted Gerald toward a waiting vehicle, Trevor began edging away from the crowd.

Chloe noticed him.

"Trevor."

He stopped.

She looked at him with quiet sadness.

"You could have told the truth."

His face twisted.

"Don't act innocent."

"I'm not."

She raised her chin.

"I helped spread a lie."

Then she glanced toward Sadi.

"And I finally admitted it."

Trevor looked away.

"You'll regret turning against me."

But before he could leave, an investigator approached and handed him a legal notice requiring his appearance for questioning about the falsified records.

Trevor's shoulders sagged.

He had once threatened to ruin Sadi's life with the power of his law firm.

Now he was being investigated for abusing that very power.

The crowd outside Harbor House began applauding when the construction vehicles were ordered to leave.

Gloria cried openly.

Hannah hugged her.

Nina wrapped her arms around Miguel.

And Sadi stood staring at the building she had nearly lost.

Roman gently touched her shoulder.

"You did it."

She shook her head.

"Not alone."

He smiled.

"No."

Sadi turned toward the crowd.

"Neither should anyone else have to."

Later that afternoon, the city announced an independent review of the redevelopment project and its disputed inspection procedures.

Authorities also began examining whether officials had improperly assisted Vale Development.

The civil case remained active.

The criminal investigations continued.

But Harbor House was safe from demolition.

For now, that was enough.

That evening, Roman took Sadi back to the old waterfront.

They stood across the street from the shelter, watching the last of the reporters leave.

Roman looked unusually thoughtful.

"There's something I need to ask you."

Sadi turned.

"What?"

He took a slow breath.

"My past will never disappear completely."

"I know."

"Even if I leave everything behind, some people will always associate my name with what I used to be."

She waited.

Roman looked down at his wedding ring.

"You deserve a life that isn't shadowed by my reputation."

Sadi's heart began beating faster.

"Roman, what are you saying?"

He struggled with the next words.

"If walking away from me would give you peace, I won't stand in your way."

Sadi stared at him.

The man who once seemed capable of controlling anything was standing before her, offering to give up the thing he loved most.

Not because he wanted to leave.

But because he finally understood that love could not be built on possession.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Are you asking me for a divorce?"

Roman's expression broke.

"No."

He took her hand.

"I'm telling you that you have a choice."

Sadi looked at him for a long moment.

Then she answered.

"I know."

May you like

She stepped closer.

"And now I want to tell you what I choose."
