Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Finally Told the Truth|

Chloe Vale had never needed to worry about money.

She grew up in a mansion overlooking the river, attended private schools, and spent summers traveling through Europe.

Her father told her their family had earned everything through hard work.

She had believed him.

Until she started noticing the people who disappeared from his life.

Employees who resigned without explanation.

Business partners who suddenly moved away.

Tenants who complained about redevelopment deals and then stopped returning calls.

Whenever she asked questions, Gerald Vale had the same answer.

"Successful people attract jealous enemies."

Chloe repeated those words for years.

Now, sitting across from Sadi in a quiet private room at a downtown restaurant, she could barely look her in the eye.

Roman had arranged security outside, but he had respected Sadi's request to conduct the conversation herself.

Chloe twisted the engagement ring on her finger.

"I owe you an apology."

Sadi waited.

"Trevor told me you were obsessed with him."

"He told you a lot of things."

"He said you followed him to restaurants."

"I didn't."

"He said you kept asking him for money."

Sadi's expression remained calm.

"I paid his bills."

Chloe looked down.

"I know that now."

She swallowed hard.

"I saw him kick you."

Sadi's posture stiffened.

"You were standing beside him."

"I know."

"And you posted that video anyway."

Tears filled Chloe's eyes.

"My father told me to."

Sadi said nothing.

Chloe wiped her face with a tissue.

"He said Roman Voss would destroy Trevor unless we controlled the story first."

"Did you believe that?"

"Yes."

"Did you believe I deserved what happened?"

Chloe looked up.

"No."

The answer came quickly.

"And that's what I can't live with."

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Then Chloe reached into her handbag and removed a thin folder.

Inside were copies of financial records, property agreements, and correspondence between Gerald Vale and Trevor's firm.

Chloe pushed them across the table.

"My father uses the Vale Foundation to make certain redevelopment projects look charitable."

Sadi opened the folder.

There were donation records connected to organizations she had never heard of.

Several payments had been routed through consulting companies.

One of those companies was listed as receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars for work on Harbor House.

"What is this?"

"An administrative services company."

"Who owns it?"

Chloe hesitated.

"Trevor."

Sadi stared at her.

"Trevor has his own consulting company?"

"On paper, his cousin owns it."

"But he receives the money."

Chloe nodded.

Sadi examined the records.

The payments seemed to begin shortly before the forged property transfer.

"Why are you giving me this?"

Chloe twisted her engagement ring again.

"Because Trevor lied to me."

Her voice broke.

"And because I found something worse."

She removed one final document.

It was a copy of a witness certification attached to the Harbor House transaction.

Sadi's old name appeared at the bottom.

Chloe pointed toward it.

"Trevor told my father he could guarantee this signature."

"Because he forged it?"

"I don't know who actually wrote it."

Chloe shook her head.

"But I heard him say you would never fight back."

The words struck Sadi harder than she expected.

You would never fight back.

Trevor had mistaken her kindness for weakness.

He had mistaken her patience for obedience.

And for years, she had allowed his opinion to define her.

Not anymore.

"Will you testify about what you heard?" Sadi asked.

Chloe went pale.

"My father will cut me off."

"That might happen."

"Trevor will destroy my reputation."

"He might try."

Chloe stared at her.

"You're not making this sound very comforting."

Sadi leaned forward.

"Because I'm not going to lie to you."

She softened her voice.

"Doing the right thing can cost something."

Chloe looked at the folder.

"And what if I lose everything?"

Sadi thought about the six hundred dollars Trevor had stolen.

She thought about sleeping in her car.

She thought about the strangers who had offered kindness when she had almost nothing.

"Then you'll find out what you still have when the money is gone."

Chloe began crying.

For the first time, Sadi saw past the expensive dress and polished appearance.

She saw a frightened young woman who had been raised to confuse wealth with safety.

"I don't know if I'm brave enough," Chloe whispered.

"Neither did I."

Sadi stood.

"But bravery isn't something you have to feel before you act."

Chloe looked up.

"You're really going to the gala?"

"Yes."

"My father knows you're coming."

"I assumed he would."

Chloe reached for her handbag.

"Then there's something you should know."

She lowered her voice.

"The gala isn't just about the waterfront."

Sadi sat back down.

Chloe continued.

"My father plans to announce that Roman Voss secretly supported the Harbor House redevelopment."

Sadi's heart sank.

"That's a lie."

"Maybe."

Chloe looked frightened.

"But he has documents with Roman's signature."

A cold silence settled between them.

Sadi thought about Roman's admission that he once held an interest in the waterfront project.

She thought about the things he had told her.

And the things he had not.

When Sadi returned home, Roman was waiting near the fireplace.

He rose as soon as he saw her expression.

"What happened?"

She placed the folder on the table.

"Tell me about your old business with Gerald Vale."

Roman looked at the documents.

For the first time since she had known him, he seemed genuinely uncertain what to say.

Sadi felt her chest tighten.

"Roman."

She stepped closer.

"Please don't make me discover the truth from somebody who wants to hurt us."

He closed his eyes briefly.

May you like

Then he said the words she had been afraid to hear.

"There is something I should have told you before we got married."
