Chapter 11 - The Aunt Who Knew Everything

Isabella Moretti had lived in the same lakeside mansion for thirty-two years.

She was sixty-eight, elegant, and famous within the family for remembering every birthday and forgetting every insult she had ever delivered.

Elena had met her only twice.

Both times, Isabella had been polite.

Now Alessandro stood outside her home with Detective Walsh and an attorney.

He had asked Elena not to accompany him.

She agreed.

There were truths he needed to confront without turning her into another witness to his pain.

Inside the mansion, Isabella greeted the visitors in a cream silk blouse.

“Alessandro.”

She kissed his cheek.

“You look tired.”

He didn't return the affection.

“We need to talk about my father.”

Isabella's smile faded.

“What about Vittorio?”

Detective Walsh introduced herself.

Isabella's posture stiffened.

“Is this official?”

“Yes, ma'am.”

They moved into the sitting room.

Family portraits lined the walls.

In one, Alessandro stood beside his father at twenty years old.

His smile was stiff.

Vittorio's hand rested heavily on his shoulder.

Walsh placed a still image from the recovered recording on the table.

“Do you recognize this woman?”

Isabella glanced at it.

“No.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“Aunt Isabella.”

She raised her chin.

“It's a terrible photograph.”

He pointed toward the bracelet.

“Mother gave you that.”

Isabella's fingers instinctively moved toward her wrist.

The bracelet was still there.

Walsh waited.

Finally, Isabella sat down.

“I was there.”

Alessandro closed his eyes.

“Why?”

“Your father called me.”

“For what?”

“He wanted help.”

Isabella's voice began to shake.

“He said Charles Mercer was demanding money.”

Alessandro stared.

“Why?”

“Because Mercer had copied the ledger.”

The detective leaned forward.

“Did Mercer threaten to release it?”

“Yes.”

Isabella pressed a hand against her chest.

“He said he would expose everyone.”

“Who was everyone?” Walsh asked.

Isabella looked toward Alessandro.

“Your father.”

A pause.

“Several business associates.”

Another pause.

“And me.”

Alessandro went still.

“You?”

Isabella nodded.

“I managed charitable accounts for the family.”

“You used the foundation?”

Her eyes filled.

“I moved money when Vittorio told me to.”

Alessandro looked away.

The Moretti Foundation funded clinics, scholarships, and housing programs.

For years, he had believed its early accounts were clean.

Now he understood why his father had fought so fiercely against an independent audit.

“What happened that night?” Walsh asked.

Isabella stared at the photograph.

“Charles came to collect money.”

“Did Vittorio pay him?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“He said he was finished being blackmailed.”

Alessandro leaned forward.

“And then?”

“They argued.”

Isabella's voice dropped.

“Charles threatened to tell Alessandro everything.”

She looked at her nephew.

“Your father became furious.”

Walsh waited.

“Did they fight physically?”

“No.”

“Did you see Vittorio collapse?”

Isabella shook her head.

“I left when the shouting began.”

“Where did you go?”

“To my car.”

“Did you return?”

Isabella hesitated.

“Yes.”

Alessandro's voice sharpened.

“Why?”

“I had forgotten my purse.”

He looked at her.

“And?”

She began crying.

“Vittorio was on the floor.”

Silence filled the room.

“Was he breathing?” Walsh asked.

“I don't know.”

“Did you call for help?”

Isabella covered her face.

“No.”

Alessandro stared.

“Why not?”

“I panicked.”

His voice broke.

“He was your brother.”

“I know.”

“You left him there?”

She sobbed.

“I was afraid the police would find the ledger.”

Alessandro stood.

He walked to the window.

For six years, he had blamed himself for leaving his father's office after an argument.

His aunt had returned afterward.

She had found Vittorio collapsed.

And she had walked away.

Walsh continued questioning her.

Eventually, Isabella admitted she had removed a leather folder from the desk.

Inside were several bank statements and a handwritten note.

She had hidden them in a safe at another property.

The actual Harbor Ledger remained missing.

When the interview ended, Alessandro stood near the doorway.

Isabella approached him.

“I never wanted you to suffer.”

He looked at her.

“You let me believe I might have caused his death.”

She cried.

“I was trying to protect the family.”

Alessandro's expression hardened.

“That's what everyone says when they want someone else to carry the consequences.”

He walked away.

That night, Elena found him standing on the mansion's terrace.

The lake wind moved through the trees.

He looked toward the dark water.

“My aunt found him.”

Elena approached.

“Your father?”

“Yes.”

“She didn't call for help?”

“No.”

Elena stood beside him.

She did not touch him.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Finally, Alessandro said, “I spent six years thinking my last words killed him.”

Elena's heart ached.

“What were they?”

He looked down.

“I told him I was ashamed to be his son.”

A long silence followed.

Then Elena said, “You were allowed to be angry.”

Alessandro closed his eyes.

“You don't understand what it means to say something like that to your father.”

“No.”

She looked toward the lake.

“But I understand what it means to lose someone and replay the last conversation until it feels like a punishment.”

He turned toward her.

Elena's eyes shone.

“The last time I spoke to my mother, I complained because she wouldn't eat.”

Her voice trembled.

“I told her she was making everything harder.”

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“She died the next morning.”

Alessandro stared.

“I spent months wishing I'd said something kinder.”

He spoke softly.

“Did she know you loved her?”

Elena nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then maybe my father knew I loved him too.”

She looked at him.

“Maybe he did.”

The wind grew colder.

Alessandro took off his jacket.

He paused before offering it.

“Would you like this?”

Elena smiled faintly.

“Yes.”

He draped it over her shoulders.

For the first time, the silence between them felt safe.

Then Alessandro's phone vibrated.

A message from Detective Walsh appeared.
