Chapter 9 - The Secret Alessandro Buried

For six years, Alessandro Moretti had refused to speak about the night his father died.

Not because he had forgotten.

Because he remembered everything.

The rain against the library windows.

The smell of whiskey.

His father's voice rising during their final argument.

And the terrible silence afterward.

Now a photograph threatened to drag that night into the light.

Elena found him in the mansion's library at midnight.

She had come to collect her phone charger after spending the evening helping Sophie settle into a temporary apartment arranged through Rachel's security firm.

The library door was open.

Alessandro sat alone beneath his father's portrait.

An untouched glass of whiskey rested beside him.

He looked older than thirty-six.

“Mr. Moretti?”

He glanced up.

“Elena.”

“I'm sorry.”

“You say that often.”

She hesitated.

“Do I?”

“Yes.”

He gave a tired smile.

“You don't have to apologize for walking through a house where you work.”

She approached slowly.

“Are you okay?”

Alessandro looked toward the portrait.

“No.”

The answer surprised her.

Ryan had always claimed to be fine even when he was furious.

Alessandro seemed unwilling to pretend.

Elena stood near the doorway.

“You don't have to tell me anything.”

“I know.”

He looked at the photograph on his desk.

“My father died after an argument with me.”

Elena remained silent.

“I was twenty-nine.”

He rubbed a hand across his face.

“He wanted me to approve a shipment through one of our transport companies.”

“What kind of shipment?”

“I didn't ask.”

He looked ashamed.

“That was the problem.”

He explained that his father's empire had grown through a mixture of legitimate businesses and criminal partnerships.

By the time Alessandro was old enough to understand, the family name opened doors and closed mouths.

He had spent years trying to separate the legitimate companies from the dangerous arrangements.

His father resisted.

“On the night he died, I refused to sign the authorization.”

“What happened?”

“He threatened to cut me out of the business.”

“And you argued.”

“Yes.”

Alessandro stared at his hands.

“I told him I'd rather have nothing than inherit what he'd built.”

Elena listened.

“He said I'd regret those words.”

His voice became quiet.

“Twenty minutes later, he collapsed in his office.”

Elena's expression softened.

“Was it a heart attack?”

“That's what the medical report said.”

“Do you believe it?”

“I did.”

He looked toward the window.

“Until Charles Mercer disappeared.”

Elena felt cold.

“Ryan's father?”

“Yes.”

“Did he take the ledger?”

“I suspected it.”

“But you never found proof.”

“No.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“The police investigated my father's death.”

“Were you a suspect?”

“For a while.”

Elena swallowed.

“Because you argued?”

“Because I was the last person known to have seen him alive.”

The silence between them grew heavy.

Finally, Elena asked, “Did you hurt him?”

Alessandro met her gaze.

“No.”

She nodded.

He studied her.

“Do you believe me?”

Elena took a moment.

“I believe you deserve the same chance to prove the truth that I do.”

Something changed in his expression.

It wasn't gratitude exactly.

It was the look of someone who had expected condemnation and found fairness instead.

Alessandro stood.

“I didn't always make good choices.”

“Neither have I.”

“You were trying to survive.”

She looked down.

“Sometimes I think I should have recognized Ryan sooner.”

“People who manipulate others depend on trust.”

He paused.

“Trusting someone isn't the same as approving what they do with it.”

Elena's eyes filled.

She turned toward the shelves to hide them.

Alessandro gave her the space.

After a moment, she said, “My mother used to tell me the truth doesn't always arrive quickly.”

He smiled faintly.

“What happened to the rest of that advice?”

“She said you still had to leave the porch light on for it.”

Alessandro laughed softly.

It was the first genuine laugh she had heard from him.

The sound surprised them both.

Then his phone rang.

Detective Walsh.

He answered.

“Moretti.”

He listened.

His expression changed.

“You found a recording?”

Elena straightened.

Alessandro put the call on speaker with Walsh's permission.

“We recovered an encrypted drive from storage unit 214,” the detective explained.

“Our forensic team has begun examining it.”

“What was on it?”

“A video recorded six years ago.”

Alessandro gripped the phone.

“Of what?”

“Your father's office.”

The room seemed to lose its air.

Walsh continued.

“The footage is incomplete.”

“But it shows someone entering the office after you left.”

Alessandro closed his eyes.

“Who?”

A pause.

Then the detective answered.

“Charles Mercer.”

Elena stared at Alessandro.

His father's death might not have been what everyone believed.

And the man who could explain it had vanished six years earlier.
