Chapter 2 - The Shattered Glass

|

The crystal chandeliers hummed faintly above thirty stunned guests who dared not make a sound.

A heavy, suffocating silence pressed down upon the dining room of Chicago’s most powerful family.

Vanessa Bellini’s diamond necklace caught the light, sparkling mockingly against her pale, frozen throat.

She tried to swallow, but her throat had gone completely dry.

My daughter’s fingers dug deeper into the fabric of my black uniform, seeking shelter from the cruel eyes around us.

I wrapped my arm around Emma’s trembling shoulders, pulling her against my chest.

Her navy graduation cap tilted further, but neither of us cared.

Luca Moretti took one measured, deliberate step toward his fiancée.

His polished leather shoes made a crisp, echoing crack against the Italian marble floor.

Every man seated at the mahogany table sat straight, terrified of drawing his deadly attention.

Luca did not raise his voice, which only made his quiet tone infinitely more terrifying.

“Answer my question, Vanessa.”

Vanessa forced an uneasy chuckle and waved her manicured hand as if brushing away dust.

“Luca, please, you’re making a scene in front of our investors and your cousins.”

“I asked you a question,” Luca repeated, his dark eyes fixing upon her like a predatory hawk.

“Whose money did you use to buy this girl’s silence?”

Vanessa backed up until her hips pressed against the ornate dining table.

Her knuckles turned white as she gripped the edge of the linen tablecloth.

“The foundation has discretionary funds, Luca, you know that!”

“Discretionary funds are meant to heal sick children and house displaced families,” Luca said coldly.

“They are not meant to finance theatrical productions where you play the benevolent saint at the expense of a child’s pride.”

A low murmur rippled through the older mob capos sitting at the far end of the room.

Vanessa’s cheeks flared with sudden, desperate anger.

“She is a maid’s daughter, Luca!”

The words tore through the elegant room like a jagged blade.

Several women at the table gasped softly into their napkins.

“She should be grateful!” Vanessa shrieked, losing her aristocratic composure completely.

“I gave her fifty thousand dollars for tuition that her mother could never earn in ten lifetimes!”

Emma flinched against my side, a fresh sob catching in her throat.

My heart broke into a thousand pieces hearing my child spoken of like a stray dog begging for scraps.

“My daughter earned her grades with sleepless nights,” I said, my voice shaking but undeniably clear.

The entire room snapped their attention to me, astonished that a housemaid dared to speak.

Vanessa glared at me with pure venom.

“Shut your mouth, Caroline, you don’t speak unless you’re pouring wine!”

“She speaks whenever she wants in my house,” Luca snapped, his voice slicing through Vanessa’s fury like steel.

Luca turned his back on Vanessa, completely dismissing her presence.

He walked toward Emma and knelt down on one knee so he was looking directly into her tear-streaked eyes.

The ruthless boss of the Chicago syndicate lowered himself onto the cold floor before an eighteen-year-old girl.

“Emma,” Luca said gently, his gravelly voice softening into something fatherly and protective.

Emma sniffled, looking down at the intimidating man covered in dark tattoos and tailored wool.

“Did she make you sign any paperwork this afternoon before the ceremony?” Luca asked.

Emma nodded slowly, pulling a folded, crumpled document from inside her graduation gown.

“She made me sign this non-disclosure agreement,” Emma whispered.

“She told me that if my mother ever showed her face at the foundation gala, the money would vanish.”

Luca took the paper from Emma’s trembling fingers and unfolded it beneath the golden light.

His jaw tightened until the tendons in his neck looked like taut cables.

He stood up slowly, the paper crumpled tightly inside his massive fist.

He turned back toward Vanessa, his eyes burning with an icy, unforgiving wrath.

“Marco,” Luca commanded without looking away from his fiancée.

The restaurant manager hurried forward, bowing his head respectfully.

“Yes, Don Moretti?”

“Call my personal forensic accountants and have them seal every ledger belonging to the Moretti Children’s Foundation immediately.”

Vanessa’s face lost every remaining trace of color.

“Luca, you can’t do that!”

May you like

“I just did,” Luca whispered, stepping directly into her personal space.

“And while they look through your books, you and I are going to have a very different conversation.”
