Chapter 3 - The Broken Ring

|

Vanessa scrambled to maintain her dignity, smoothing down the front of her expensive crimson designer dress.

Her voice wobbled between false sweet indignation and sharp, arrogant panic.

“My father will not tolerate you insulting our family in front of the entire syndicate, Luca.”

“Your father should have taught you not to steal from mine,” Luca answered, his voice devoid of warmth.

A cold draft swept through the grand restaurant doors, carrying the damp chill of a rainy Chicago evening.

None of the thirty dinner guests reached for their wine glasses or dared to clear their throats.

They all knew the history of the Moretti family and the absolute authority Luca commanded.

Luca reached out his right hand, extending his open palm toward Vanessa.

The heavy gold signet ring on his pinky caught the light, bearing the crest of three generations of ruthless rule.

“Give it back,” Luca commanded quietly.

Vanessa stared at his open hand in disbelief.

“What?”

“You heard me, Vanessa.”

Her manicured fingers instinctively curled around the seven-carat emerald-cut diamond resting on her left ring finger.

It was an heirloom that had once belonged to Luca’s beloved grandmother, Sofia Moretti.

“You are embarrassing me over a servant!” Vanessa cried, tears of pure humiliation finally spilling down her powdered cheeks.

“This marriage was arranged to unite the North and South territories!”

“There is no union with a liar,” Luca replied coldly.

“And no woman who dishonors a mother’s sacrifice will ever carry my family name.”

Emma clung tightly to my arm, her body trembling with the sheer magnitude of the drama unfolding before us.

I wanted nothing more than to pull my daughter out of that den of wolves and take her home to our small apartment.

Yet I could not move my feet; Luca’s towering presence held the entire room under an unbreakable spell.

“I will not take it off!” Vanessa hissed, backing toward her brother, who sat pale and motionless at the table.

“Antonio, tell him! Tell him he cannot treat our family this way!”

Antonio Bellini, a man known across the city for his brutal temper, stared down at his plate and did not lift a finger.

He knew better than to cross Luca Moretti when the Don’s blood was boiling.

Luca took two swift strides forward, closing the distance between himself and Vanessa.

He gently took hold of her wrist, his grip unyielding as iron, yet without a single shred of physical violence.

With deliberate, calm precision, Luca slid the sparkling diamond ring off her trembling finger.

Vanessa let out a strangled, pathetic gasp that sounded like a wounded animal.

Luca dropped the ring into the breast pocket of his tailored suit without even glancing down at it.

“The engagement is over,” Luca announced to the thirty frozen dinner guests.

The silence that followed was deafening, punctuated only by the faint ticking of the grandfather clock in the foyer.

Vanessa pointed a shaking, manicured finger at me, her eyes filled with murderous spite.

“This is your fault, you filthy little scrub woman!”

Before she could take another step toward me, two towering security guards in black suits stepped between us like iron walls.

“Escort Miss Bellini to her vehicle,” Luca instructed, his voice as cold as winter frost.

“Ensure she takes only the clothes on her back.”

“You will regret this, Luca Moretti!” Vanessa shrieked as the guards firmly guided her toward the heavy double doors.

“My father will burn your docks to the ground for this disgrace!”

Her shrill screams echoed down the long marble hallway until the heavy mahogany doors slammed shut.

The grand dining room felt instantly lighter, as if a poison had finally been sucked out of the room.

Luca adjusted the cuffs of his dark shirt, smoothing down the fabric with steady hands.

He turned his gaze toward the silent, nervous patrons sitting at the feast.

“Dinner is concluded for the evening,” Luca stated calmly.

“My drivers will see every one of you safely to your estates.”

Within five minutes, the powerful mobsters and their glamorous wives stood up, bowed their heads to Luca, and filed out in absolute silence.

The lavish banquet hall emptied until only Luca, Marco, Emma, and I remained beneath the sparkling chandeliers.
