Chapter 5 - The Spider’s Web

I fell back against the table, my hand flying to my mouth to stifle a scream.

The air in the subterranean vault turned thin and rancid.

"He knew," I choked out, tears blurring my vision.

"My father knew Derek was hunting me."

Alexander picked up the photograph, inspecting the timestamp in the corner with cold, analytical eyes.

"Derek was an enforcer for the Falcones before they cleaned him up and gave him a corporate disguise," Alexander said, his voice flat with lethal anger.

"Daniel realized the syndicate was closing in on him."

"Then why didn't he take me and run?" I demanded, slamming my palms against the table.

"Why did he leave me alone to be devoured by that monster?"

"Because he thought he was protecting you by dying," Alexander answered quietly.

"He thought if he died, the trail would end with him."

"He was wrong."

"He underestimated how greedy the Falcones were."

Alexander set the picture down and picked up the cassette tape.

He produced a small portable player from inside his coat, slotted the tape in, and pressed play.

A hiss of static filled the cold room, followed by a familiar, beloved cough.

"Emily, my little bird."

Hearing my father's voice after seven years broke something fundamental inside my chest.

I closed my eyes as hot tears tracked down my cheeks.

"If you are listening to this, it means Alexander found you before they did," the recording continued, the voice tired and strained.

"I don't have much time."

"The car behind me has been following me since Gary, Indiana."

My breath hitched.

The car accident wasn't an accident at all.

"The book in this box contains every account number, every bribe, and every shipment manifest of the Falcone syndicate for the past thirty years."

"They think I hid the digital copy in Switzerland."

"They don't know it's encoded into the very foundation of Moretti's corporate network."

"Derek Carter is dangerous, Emily."

"He was sent to marry into our family to locate this ledger."

"Do not trust his smile."

"Do not trust his apologies."

"Trust only Alexander."

"He is a man of violence, yes, but he is a man of honor."

"He will burn this entire city to the ground before he lets them hurt you."

"I love you, Emily."

"Be brave."

The recording clicked off, plunging the vault back into a silence so profound I could hear my own heart hammering against my ribs.

I stood there, trembling, staring at the leather ledger.

Three years of mental torture, three years of gaslighting, of being told I was insane, broken, and worthless.

Derek had made me believe I was a fragile bird with broken wings.

In reality, I was holding the detonator to his entire criminal empire.

"Emily," Alexander spoke, his voice unusually soft.

I opened my eyes.

The tears had stopped.

In their place was an unfamiliar, terrifying clarity.

"They used my father's death to break me," I whispered.

"They used my grief as a leash."

"Yes," Alexander said, watching me closely.

"What is in this book?"

"Enough evidence to send Derek Carter and every boss in the Falcone family to federal prison for the rest of their unnatural lives."

"Or?" I asked, looking up into his pale, predatory eyes.

Alexander’s lips curled into a slow, dangerous smile.

"Or enough leverage to dismantle their organization piece by piece and feed it to the wolves."

I reached out and picked up the ledger, clutching the worn leather against my chest.

"I don't want them in prison, Alexander."

"Prison has guards."

"Prison has visitors."

"Prison allows them to breathe."

Alexander stepped closer, the scent of expensive cedar and tobacco wrapping around me like armor.

"What do you want, little bird?"

"I want Derek to feel the terror he gave me every single day of my life."

May you like

Alexander reached out, his thumb gently wiping away a dry tear from my cheek.

"Then that is exactly what we will give him."
