Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Falcone

The courtroom scandal detonated across Chicago like a tactical warhead.

By noon, the Department of Justice had launched a federal inquiry into Judge Robert Harris.

By two o'clock, Derek Carter had been arrested for witness tampering, bribery, and financial fraud.

He was currently being held in a federal holding cell without bail.

We sat in the private study of Alexander’s penthouse, watching the coverage roll across the television screens.

The victory felt immense, yet the heavy knot in my chest refused to untangle.

"It was too easy," I said, turning to Alexander, who was pouring two glasses of amber scotch.

"Taking down Derek was easy," he agreed, handing me a glass.

"Derek was an errand boy who thought he was a king."

"The Falcones haven't moved yet."

"They won't move in the daylight," Alexander said grimly.

"They move when they realize their assets are being liquidated."

"What will they do?"

"They will try to cut the head off the snake."

"You?"

"Me."

Alexander sat across from me, studying my face with an intensity that made the hair on my arms stand up.

"You surprised me today, Emily."

"Why? Because I didn't hide under the table?"

"Because you didn't just survive," he said softly.

"You destroyed him."

"Your father would have been proud."

I looked down at the amber liquid in my glass.

"My father is dead, Alexander."

"And Derek said he died in the dirt."

Alexander fell silent for a long moment, staring into the flickering fireplace.

"Daniel Whitcomb didn't die in the dirt," he said finally, his voice thick with uncharacteristic grief.

"He died in my arms."

I froze, the glass halfway to my lips.

"What?"

"Seven years ago, on the night he gave me that key," Alexander whispered.

"The Falcones ambushed us on Route 41."

"Daniel took two bullets meant for my chest."

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes, but I forced myself to hold them back.

"Why did you let me believe it was a car accident?"

"Because your father begged me to lie to you," Alexander said, his blue eyes gleaming with raw torment.

"He made me promise that I would never drag you into this darkness unless there was no other choice."

"He wanted you to have a normal, beautiful life."

"A normal life?" I let out a broken, humorless laugh.

"I married the devil incarnate, Alexander!"

"I spent three years being starved, beaten down, and locked in rooms!"

Alexander stood abruptly, setting his glass on the mantle with enough force to crack the crystal.

"I didn't know!" he roared, his voice echoing violently through the high-ceilinged room.

"I didn't know Derek had found you until last month!"

"And the moment I discovered who he was, I spent every night looking for a way to pull you out without getting you killed!"

I stood up to face him, our chests nearly touching, the heat radiating between us like an open furnace.

"Then why didn't you come for me sooner?"

"Because I am a monster, Emily!" Alexander growled, grabbing my shoulders with trembling hands.

"Look at me!"

"I kill people for a living!"

"I rule the filthiest streets of this city!"

"Your father died so I could live, and I couldn't bear the thought of tainting his daughter with my blood-soaked hands!"

I looked into his pale blue eyes, seeing the unbearable weight of a debt he had carried alone for seven long years.

He wasn't a monster.

He was a man chained to his own survival, burning with a ferocious, protective fire.

Before my mind could talk me out of it, I raised my hands and pressed my palms against his jaw.

His stubble was rough against my soft skin.

He stopped breathing, his entire body freezing beneath my touch.

"You didn't taint me, Alexander," I whispered, stepping closer until our breath mingled.

"You saved me."

For a split second, the world narrowed down to the sound of our racing hearts.

Alexander leaned down, his eyes dark with an emotion that terrified me more than any gun.

Then, the sudden shriek of the building's emergency alarms shattered the silence.

Red lights began pulsing violently across the ceiling.

Marco’s voice crackled through the wall intercom, sounding breathless and urgent.

"Boss! We have a breach on the lower levels!"

May you like

"It’s not Derek’s men!"

"The Falcones sent their heavy hitters!"
