Chapter 3 - The Chase in the Shadows

The backstage hallway was dimly lit and smelled of old polished wood and velvet curtains.
My heels clicked rhythmically against the concrete floor as I guided Emily toward the private service exit.
I could hear the chaotic roar of the auditorium fading behind the heavy fire doors.
“Mommy,” Emily whispered softly, looking up at me with steady, inquisitive eyes.
“That man on the stage had my eyes, didn't he?”
My heart squeezed with an ache that was both fierce and tender.
“Yes, sweetheart, he did,” I answered honestly, refusing to lie to her extraordinary mind.
Before Emily could ask another question, the heavy double doors at the end of the corridor slammed open with violent force.
“Claire!”
The sound of his voice sent an involuntary shiver down my spine, but I did not stop walking.
Heavy, hurried footsteps echoed against the bare walls as Vincent closed the distance between us.
Two of his private security guards followed closely behind him, their faces pale with shock and confusion.
“Claire, stop! Look at me!” he commanded, his deep baritone cracking with an emotion I had never heard in him before.
I stopped just before the steel exit door, turned slowly, and shielded Emily behind my dress.
Vincent halted five feet away, breathing heavily as though he had run through miles of freezing Chicago streets.
His dark hair was disheveled, and the composed mask of the ruthless underworld kingpin had completely shattered into jagged pieces.
He dropped his gaze to Emily, who peeked out from behind my skirts, watching him with calm curiosity.
His large hand rose toward her, trembling visibly in the fluorescent glare of the hallway.
“She… she’s mine,” Vincent breathed, his voice barely a rasp.
“She is my daughter.”
“She is Emily Bennett,” I corrected him in a voice as cold as glacial ice.
“She has never carried your name, and she never will.”
“Claire, please,” Vincent pleaded, stepping forward, his eyes burning with frantic desperation.
“I searched for you! When you vanished from the hospital, I tore the city apart looking for you!”
“You searched for me?” I gave a bitter, mocking laugh that cut through the silence like a scalpel.
“You didn't search for a wife you loved, Vincent. You searched for a possession that had dared to slip through your fingers.”
“You had Sophia. You had your precious son. You had everything your mafia council demanded of you.”
Behind him, the emergency doors swung open again, and Sophia came stumbling down the hallway in her designer stilettos.
Her face was flushed red with humiliation, her expensive silk gown swishing violently against her legs.
“Vincent! What are you doing chasing this woman?” Sophia shrieked, her voice echoing off the concrete walls.
“The press is out there! The board members are demanding an explanation! You are humiliating our family!”
Vincent did not even turn to look at her; his eyes remained locked on Emily’s small, composed face.
“Shut up, Sophia,” Vincent growled without turning around, his tone lethal and venomous.
Sophia recoiled as if struck, staring at him in utter disbelief.
“Did you hear what she said on that stage?” Sophia hissed, pointing a manicured finger at me.
“She is a liar who disappeared with another man’s child to extort you seven years later!”
Emily stepped out from behind my dress, looked directly at the screaming woman, and spoke with perfect, calm clarity.
“My mother does not lie, and she has never asked anyone for a single penny.”
Vincent flinched as Emily’s words landed, the profound dignity of the child piercing through his armored heart.
“We are leaving now,” I said, pushing the heavy metal bar of the emergency exit.

“If any of your men follow us to our hotel, Vincent, I will call the federal authorities before your car can turn the corner.”
The heavy door swung open into the cold Chicago night air, and we stepped out into the rain, leaving the shattered don in the shadows.
