Chapter 5 - The Legal Fortress

|
The morning sun broke through the gray Chicago clouds, casting sharp beams of light across the office of Madison Parker.
Located on the forty-fifth floor of a gleaming skyscraper overlooking the lake, Madison’s firm was an impenetrable legal fortress.
Madison was not only my dearest friend from our college days; she was the most ruthless divorce and family attorney in the state.
She sat behind her minimalist glass desk, reviewing a thick stack of blue-bound legal files with a satisfied smirk.
“Claire, honey, you didn't just drop a bombshell last night,” Madison said, looking up over her tortoiseshell reading glasses.
“You detonated a tactical nuclear warhead across the entire Chicago high-society register.”
I sat opposite her in a tailored beige coat, sipping a cup of black coffee while Emily worked on a puzzle in the adjacent lounge.
“I didn't do it for revenge, Madison,” I said quietly, watching the steam rise from my porcelain cup.
“I did it because Emily deserved her moment of truth without hiding in the shadows of his guilt.”
“Well, whatever your motive was, Vincent Moretti’s legal team has already called my office six times this morning,” Madison noted, tapping a pen on her desk.
“They are demanding an emergency custody hearing, parental visitation rights, and an immediate court-ordered paternity test.”
I felt a cold panic flare in my chest, setting my coffee cup down with a sharp clink against the glass.
“Can he take her from me, Madison?” I asked, my voice tightening with maternal dread.
“He has billions of dollars and half the city’s judges in his pocket.”
Madison leaned forward, her sharp eyes gleaming with fierce, unshakable confidence.
“Let him try, Claire,” Madison smiled coldly.
“Seven years ago, when we finalized your quiet separation, we filed a legally binding abandonment affidavit that Vincent himself signed without reading.”
I remembered that dark time, when Vincent had been so consumed with Sophia and his newborn son that he signed whatever Madison’s runners brought to his desk.
“He signed a total surrender of parental rights,” Madison explained, holding up a certified copy with Vincent’s bold, arrogant signature at the bottom.
“In exchange for your refusal to take a single dollar of alimony, child support, or marital property, he relinquished all claims.”
“On paper, Vincent Moretti is a complete legal stranger to Emily Bennett.”
A deep breath of immense relief escaped my chest, soothing the panic that had clawed at my heart since last night.
Suddenly, Madison’s private desk phone buzzed with an urgent tone, and her executive assistant spoke through the intercom.
“Ms. Parker, Mr. Moretti is in the reception lobby with his chief counsel and four armed bodyguards.”
Madison didn't blink; she simply pressed the button and spoke clearly.
“Tell the building security to inform Mr. Moretti that if his armed thugs take one step past the metal detectors, the Chicago Police SWAT team will be here in three minutes.”
“And tell Vincent he may enter my conference room alone, without a weapon, and on his best behavior.”
Two minutes later, the heavy frosted-glass doors of the conference room swung open, and Vincent walked in.
He had dark circles under his eyes, and his tailored charcoal suit looked slightly wrinkled, as though he hadn't slept a single wink.
He walked into the room, saw me sitting by the desk, and stopped moving, his eyes filled with a desperate, agonizing hunger.
“Claire,” he said, his voice raw and broken.
“Please, we need to talk.”
Madison stood up, resting both hands on her desk like an empress defending her kingdom.

“Sit down, Mr. Moretti,” Madison ordered with icy professionalism.
“You are about to learn what the word ‘consequences’ actually means.”
