Chapter 6

By Friday morning, Nora Sterling’s forensic team had cracked Vincent’s shell corporation wide open.
I sat in Nora’s private conference room surrounded by stacks of financial binders, bank statements, and certified property records.
Beside Nora sat Marcus Vance, a legendary corporate auditor who had previously spent fifteen years investigating financial crimes for the federal government.
"Your husband is arrogant, Mrs. Moretti," Marcus said, tapping a thick manila folder with his pen.
"He assumed that by layering five different limited liability companies between his Chicago accounts and the Nashville property, no one would ever trace the origin."
"Where did the money come from, Marcus?" I asked.
"Straight from your late father's timber trust," Marcus replied bluntly.
"Vincent exploited his administrative power of attorney to transfer two point four million dollars into an escrow account registered in Delaware."
"From Delaware, the funds were wired to an entity called Horizon Crest LLC."
"And the sole authorized managing member of Horizon Crest LLC?"
Marcus flipped the folder open and pushed a document across the mahogany table.
Sophia Reynolds’ signature was stamped in black ink at the bottom of the operating agreement.
"She didn't just accept the money, Claire," Nora added, her eyes flashing with grim satisfaction.
"She actively signed the tax disclosures claiming the funds were an equity contribution from an offshore partner."
"That is conspiracy to commit grand larceny, bank fraud, and tax evasion."
"What happens when we pull the trigger?" I asked, looking between the two of them.
"We file an emergency petition under seal in Cook County Circuit Court on Monday morning," Nora explained.
"We submit the financial tracing, the audio recording from The Drake, and your affidavit."
"The judge will issue an immediate temporary restraining order freezing Vincent’s domestic accounts and placing a lis pendens lien on the Tennessee estate."
"Vincent will walk into his office on Monday afternoon and find his credit cards declined, his personal accounts locked, and a process server waiting in the lobby."
"And Sophia?"
"Sophia will receive a formal summons naming her as a co-defendant in a civil racketeering and fraud lawsuit," Nora said.
"Her assets will be frozen alongside his."
"The boutique PR agency she built will be placed under court-ordered receivership to preserve whatever funds remain."
I sat back in my chair, feeling the weight of the moment pressing into my chest.
This was the destruction of two people who had spent their lives pretending to love me.
There was no joy in this victory.
There was only a deep, cold sense of survival.
"There is one more thing," Marcus interjected, adjusting his spectacles.
"Vincent has an annual board meeting and charity gala tomorrow night at the Palmer House."
"The Moretti Foundation Gala."
My stomach tightened.
The gala was the premier social event of the autumn season in Chicago.
Over four hundred guests—politicians, judges, business moguls, and journalists—would be in attendance.
Vincent was scheduled to deliver the keynote address celebrating the foundation’s twentieth anniversary.
He had personally insisted weeks ago that I stand beside him on stage during his opening remarks.
"Sophia is attending as the foundation's official media liaison," I said quietly, the realization dawning on me.
"She handled the press releases and the guest list."
Nora’s lips curved into a sharp, lethal smile.
"Tomorrow night is the perfect battlefield, Claire."
"Why wait for a quiet court filing on Monday when you can deliver the blow in front of every single person whose respect Vincent Moretti craves?"
"Public exposure removes his ability to spin the story," Marcus agreed.
"Vincent’s power relies entirely on his reputation."
"If his board of directors discovers he embezzled private trust funds for a mistress before the market opens on Monday, they will force his resignation as CEO before sunrise."
I looked down at my hands.
My wedding band caught the overhead fluorescent light, a circle of platinum that had once felt like a promise of eternal devotion.
Now, it felt like an iron shackle.
"How do we execute it?" I asked, looking up at Nora.
Nora slid a sleek black thumb drive across the table to me.
"The gala uses a digital media projection system for Vincent's keynote address, correct?"
"Yes," I answered.
"He has a slide deck highlighting the foundation’s charitable donations over the past year."
"The AV technician at the Palmer House is a former client of mine," Nora said softly.
"He owes me a very large favor."
"All you have to do is make sure this drive replaces the presentation file fifteen minutes before Vincent takes the microphone."
"What is on the drive?"
"Everything," Nora replied.
"The photos from Miami."
"The Instagram timestamps from Sophia’s private account."
"The wire transfer receipts showing two point four million dollars leaving your father's trust into Sophia’s Tennessee property."
"And the audio recording of Sophia boasting about her secret investor at The Drake."
The sheer audacity of the plan sent adrenaline coursing through my veins.
It was absolute.
It was merciless.
It would strip Vincent of his pride, his empire, and his mistress in a single, devastating stroke.
"He will come after me, Nora," I whispered.
"Not if you vanish the moment the screen goes live," Nora countered.
"I have arranged a private security detail to escort you from the ballroom the second the video plays."
"A car will take you directly to a private airfield in Gary, Indiana."
"By the time Vincent finishes explaining the presentation to four hundred horrified socialites, you will be in a secure residence under a completely separate legal jurisdiction."
I placed my hand gently over my stomach, feeling the steady, silent life growing inside me.
Tomorrow night, Claire Moretti would cease to exist.

"Get the technician ready," I said, picking up the black drive and sliding it into my purse.
"I'll handle the rest."
