Chapter 7

The Grand Ballroom of the Palmer House was a cathedral of gilded excess.
Crystal chandeliers hung from towering frescoed ceilings, casting a warm, amber glow over five hundred guests dressed in black tie and couture evening gowns.
A twelve-piece orchestra played soft jazz near the stage, while servers in white gloves moved through the crowd with silver trays of vintage champagne.
I stood beside Vincent near the entrance of the ballroom, greeting donors, senators, and corporate executives.
I was wearing an emerald green silk gown with a daring, low back that accentuated my posture, my dark hair swept up into an intricate chignon.
Around my neck hung the diamond necklace Vincent had given me.
To every guest who approached us, we looked like the ultimate golden couple—wealthy, untouchable, and deeply devoted.
"You look breathtaking tonight, Claire," Vincent whispered into my ear, his hand resting possessively at the small of my back.
"Every man in this room is staring at you."
"Are they?" I asked, turning my head to meet his gaze with a radiant smile.
"I hadn't noticed."
"I only have eyes for you, Vincent."
His chest swelled with visible pride.
He loved possessing beautiful things, and tonight, he believed he possessed me completely.
Across the room, standing near the media riser, was Sophia.
She was dressed in a shimmering silver gown that clung to her curves, holding a clipboard and talking animatedly to a group of local journalists.
Every few minutes, her eyes would drift toward Vincent and me.
Whenever our gazes met, she would offer a polite, distant nod, playing the role of the diligent, professional PR coordinator to perfection.
Underneath that composed exterior, however, I could see the feverish excitement in her eyes.
She believed she was standing on the threshold of victory.
She believed that within a year, she would be the one wearing the emerald dresses and standing by Vincent's side at these galas.
"Excuse me for a moment, darling," I murmured, touching Vincent’s arm gently.
"I need to touch up my makeup before the speeches begin."
"Don't take too long, sweetheart," Vincent said, kissing my cheek.
"I go on stage in twenty minutes, and I want you beside me when I announce the new pediatric wing."
"I wouldn't miss it for the world," I replied smoothly.
I walked through the crowd, nodding politely to acquaintances, and slipped through the heavy velvet curtains near the backstage hallway.
The hallway was dimly lit, bustling with event coordinators, sound engineers, and banquet staff.
I walked directly toward the audio-visual booth situated behind the main stage partition.
A young man wearing a black headset and a Palmer House staff badge was sitting in front of a bank of monitors and digital switchboards.
He looked up as I approached.
"Can I help you, ma'am? This area is restricted."
"Nora Sterling sent me, Leo," I said in a low, clear whisper.
The young man froze, his eyes widening slightly.
He looked down at my hands.
Without a word, I opened my evening clutch, pulled out the black thumb drive, and placed it on the console beside his keyboard.
"The keynote presentation," I said.
"File name is *Moretti_Legacy_Final*."
Leo swallowed hard, his throat bobbing nervously.
"Nora told me what's on here."
"Then you know why it matters," I said softly.
"Vincent Moretti is going to step onto that stage in precisely fifteen minutes."
"When he clicks his remote for the first slide, you make sure this video plays on every screen in the ballroom, including the live press feed."
"Can you do that?"
Leo looked at the drive, then up at my face.
"My sister lost her home because of one of Vincent’s predatory development projects three years ago," Leo whispered, his voice trembling with quiet resolve.
"Consider it done, Mrs. Moretti."
"Thank you, Leo," I said.
I turned and walked back toward the ballroom, my heart thumping a steady, warrior's rhythm against my ribs.
As I pushed through the velvet curtains, Sophia stepped into my path.
She blocked the narrow corridor, holding a glass of white wine, her eyes scanning my face with sharp, suspicious curiosity.
"Claire," she said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness.
"What were you doing backstage?"
"Just checking on the flower arrangements near the podium," I lied effortlessly, not breaking stride as I stepped around her.
"Everything has to be perfect for Vincent tonight."
Sophia reached out and caught my elbow, her grip firmer than it should have been.
"You seem tense tonight, Claire."
"Is something wrong between you and Vincent?"
I stopped and looked down at her hand on my arm until she slowly, reluctantly released her grip.
Then I leaned in close, until my lips were inches from her ear.
"Nothing is wrong, Sophia," I whispered, letting a cold, knowing smile curl the edge of my mouth.
"In fact, everything is about to become completely clear."
"Enjoy the presentation."
I stepped past her into the bright light of the ballroom, leaving her standing frozen in the shadows of the corridor, a look of sudden, sickening dread washing over her face.
I walked to the VIP table at the front of the stage where Vincent was already standing, checking his watch.
The master of ceremonies stepped up to the podium, his voice booming over the state-of-the-art sound system.
"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests... please welcome the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Moretti Group, Mr. Vincent Moretti!"
The ballroom erupted into polite, thunderous applause.
Vincent smiled, adjusted the cuffs of his tuxedo, and leaned down to whisper in my ear one last time.
"Watch this, baby," he murmured arrogantly.
"This is how empires are built."
He stepped up the stairs and onto the stage, basking in the blinding glare of the spotlights.
I watched him reach into his pocket and pull out the small wireless presentation clicker.
Behind him, three massive eighty-foot high-definition LED screens flickered to life.
I did not sit down at the table.
I took three quiet steps backward into the crowd, where a tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark suit quietly fell into step behind me.
My security detail.
The exit doors were thirty feet away.
Vincent raised his hands to quiet the applause, flashing his signature charismatic smile.
"Good evening, Chicago," Vincent began, his deep voice commanding the entire room.
"Twenty years ago, my family founded this organization with a single, unbreakable principle: trust."
May you like
He raised his thumb and clicked the remote.
"And tonight, I want to show you exactly what our legacy looks like."
