Chapter 11 - The Shadow of the Past

Inside the whitewashed living room of the cottage, the smell of dried lavender was instantly overpowered by the scent of rain and gunpowder that always seemed to cling to Dante Moretti.

Elena moved with mechanical precision. She packed Leo’s formula, his clothes, and the emergency documents she had kept hidden beneath the floorboards of the pantry. She refused to let Dante help, her pride standing like a fortress between them even as her hands trembled while zipping the duffel bag.

Dante stood by the bay window, his back to the room, scanning the tree line through a pair of compact tactical binoculars.

"How did they track me?" Elena demanded, clicking the buckle of Leo’s car seat into place. "I laundered those server requests through six proxy nodes in Reykjavik. No one in your world has that kind of technical infrastructure."

"My world didn't," Dante replied, lowering the binoculars. He turned to face her, the afternoon light catching the faded scar along his jawline—a souvenir from Pier Seventeen. "Victor Vance did."

The name hit Elena like a physical blow. She froze, her hand hovering over Leo’s blanket.

"Victor died four years ago," she whispered, her voice trembling. "My father buried him. I attended the memorial service myself."

"An empty mahogany casket buried under three feet of concrete in Queens," Dante countered grimly. "Victor faked his death with the help of the federal prosecutor’s office, took thirty million of your family’s dirty money, and vanished into Eastern Europe. When your father died and I took over the territory, Victor assumed the money was lost forever. Until you activated the second-tier offshore ledger three weeks ago to buy this house."

Elena closed her eyes in bitter realization. She had thought she was being clever, using a dormant account that bore no connection to the Moretti empire. But that account had belonged to her father’s inner circle—a circle Victor Vance had built from the shadows.

"He doesn't just want the money, Elena," Dante continued, stepping toward her until she could feel the heat radiating from him. "He wants you. Because as long as you're alive, you're the sole surviving heir to the Vance syndicate's trust. And that trust controls the blackmail files on half the state supreme court."

A low rumble of thunder vibrated the windowpane. Outside, the clear coastal afternoon had darkened into an ominous, bruise-colored sky.

Suddenly, a dull pop echoed from the driveway, followed by the high-pitched chirp of Dante's sedan alarm being triggered.

Dante was moving before the echo faded. In a single fluid motion, he drew a suppressed SIG Sauer from his shoulder holster, pulled Elena behind the thick pine structural pillar of the kitchen, and flattened himself against the wall.

"They aren't three hours away," Dante muttered coldly, checking the chamber. "They're already here."
