Chapter 16 - The Serpent's Gala

The annual Massachusetts Heritage Gala was in full swing at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over women in silk gowns and men in tuxedoes sipping vintage champagne. Senator Thomas Cassidy stood near the marble rotunda, the center of attention, flashing his polished political smile while discussing infrastructure bills with high-ranking federal judges.

He had no idea that twenty feet away, blending seamlessly into the elite crowd, stood Dante Moretti.

Dante wore a midnight-blue Tom Ford tuxedo, his arm tucked casually behind his back to conceal the stiff posture caused by his stitched shoulder. His hair was slicked back, his dark eyes observing Cassidy like a hawk locking onto a mouse.

In Dante's earpiece, Elena’s voice was crisp and clear.

"I’m in the server room beneath the library wing," she whispered. "The security console is bypassed. You have four minutes before the guard rotation notices the disabled hallway cameras."

"Copy that," Dante murmured into his lapel microphone.

He waited until Cassidy excused himself to head toward the private VIP lounge behind the impressionist gallery. Dante followed, slipping past the velvet rope with the silent grace of a ghost.

As Cassidy pushed open the heavy mahogany door of the private suite, Dante stepped in right behind him, closed the door, and locked the deadbolt with a soft, decisive click.

Cassidy spun around, a glass of bourbon in his hand. "Excuse me, this is a private—"

The words froze in his throat. The glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the Persian rug.

"D-Dante?" Cassidy stammered, all color draining from his face as he backed away toward the desk. "You're... you were at the cottage. The reports said—"

"Reports can be bought, Thomas," Dante said, stepping into the center of the room, his hands casually resting in his pockets. "Just like you were bought by Victor Vance."

"I don't know what you're talking about!" Cassidy gasped, his hand darting toward the desk drawer where a panic button was hidden.

Before his fingers could touch the wood, Dante moved. With blinding speed, he grabbed Cassidy’s wrist, slammed his hand flat against the mahogany surface, and pinned it there with enough force to make the senator shriek in agony.

"Elena is alive, Thomas," Dante whispered inches from the terrified man's ear. "And right now, she is using your desktop terminal to transfer every stolen dollar back into a public charity in her father's name."

Cassidy’s eyes widened in sheer horror. "No... no, you can't! Victor will kill me!"

"Victor isn't going to get the chance," Dante growled. "Where is he, Cassidy?"
