Chapter 4 - THE TRANSLATION OF BETRAYAL

|

Vanessa’s piercing wails echoed down the grand marble hallway until the heavy iron cellar doors slammed shut.

The two hired hitmen were dragged out through the rear terrace, their boots leaving streaks of muddy water across the floorboards.

The fifty wealthy guests did not wait for dessert or an apology.

They gathered their fur coats and leather bags in complete, terrified silence, fleeing toward the circular driveway where their drivers waited.

Within fifteen minutes, the vast, glittering ballroom of the Moretti mansion had emptied entirely.

Only five people remained in the cavernous, echoing hall: Luca, Michael, Carlo Vitale, Marco, and me.

I stood near the buffet table, my hands still clasped over my wine-stained apron, my body trembling from the sudden drop in adrenaline.

Luca walked back to the head table, where Carlo Vitale was packing his leather briefcase with deliberate, respectful care.

“Mr. Vitale,” Luca said, his tone returning to a formal, diplomatic calm.

Carlo stopped, looking up at the young mafia Don with deep, genuine remorse in his dark Italian eyes.

“Mr. Moretti, I must swear to you on the grave of my grandfather,” Carlo said in Italian.

I immediately translated his words softly for Michael:

“He says he had no knowledge of any violence planned against your family.”

Carlo continued, gesturing with his hands as he spoke rapid, expressive Roman Italian.

“I believed this was an honorable purchase to settle an old partnership debt,” Carlo explained through my translation.

“Miss Bellini provided me with three additional folders yesterday evening.”

“She told me that if anything went wrong at dinner tonight, I was to deliver these files directly to the federal prosecutor on Dearborn Street.”

Luca’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently along his cheek.

Carlo opened his briefcase and pulled out a thick red folder, handing it directly across the linen tablecloth.

Luca took the file, opening it under the chandelier light, his brow furrowing as he scanned the Italian legal text.

He looked up from the pages, his eyes finding mine across the room.

“Emily,” Luca commanded softly.

“Come here.”

I stepped forward, my worn black shoes making no sound against the Persian rug, and stopped beside his chair.

Luca held the papers out toward me, his large, tattooed fingers steady and warm as they brushed against mine.

“Translate the bold clauses on page two, Emily,” he said, his voice dropping into a gentle, focused register.

I took the heavy parchment, my eyes quickly skimming the formal, ornate Italian legalese my grandmother had taught me to read as a child.

My breath caught in my throat as the true scale of the conspiracy became clear.

“It’s a commercial lease agreement, sir,” I whispered, looking up into Luca’s dark gray eyes.

“Between the Bellini family and the Volkov syndicate out of Detroit.”

Michael gasped from across the table.

“The Russians? Vanessa was dealing with the Russians?!”

“Keep reading, Emily,” Luca instructed quietly.

“The contract stipulates that upon Don Roberto’s restaurant being transferred to Mr. Vitale’s front company, the land behind the building would be rezoned,” I continued.

“The parking lots and the private alleyways were to be converted into an uninspected cargo transit hub for maritime freight.”

“The Bellinis were using your father’s beloved restaurant as a blind corridor to smuggle unregulated weapons directly into the city.”

Luca’s chest rose and fell in a slow, terrifying rhythm of suppressed fury.

Their father had spent forty years building that restaurant with honest sweat and traditional recipes to keep his sons’ names clean of federal indictments.

And Vanessa had planned to turn that sacred ground into a dirty pipeline for foreign warlords.

Carlo Vitale shook his head in profound disgust, resting his hand against his heart.

“I am withdrawing my offer immediately, Mr. Moretti,” Carlo said in Italian, which I translated for the room.

“I will return to Rome on the morning flight.”

“And my banks will freeze all Bellini lines of credit across Europe before noon tomorrow.”

Luca looked at the Italian businessman, bowing his head with solemn, dignified respect.

“Thank you, Mr. Vitale,” Luca replied in measured, respectful English.

“Marco will escort you to O’Hare in my private armored transport.”

“You are a friend to this house.”

Carlo shook Luca’s hand, nodded respectfully to Michael and me, and walked out into the stormy night.

The heavy front doors clicked shut, leaving only the three of us beneath the vast, silent chandeliers.
