Chapter 10 - THE RESTORATION OF THE NAME

|
By three in the afternoon, the storm clouds over Chicago had completely broken apart, leaving the sky a brilliant, washed blue.
A crisp autumn wind swept the golden leaves across the gravel driveway of the Moretti estate.
The heavy iron perimeter gates stood wide open to the sunlight, the armed sentries replaced by discreet, professional security details.
Inside the grand mansion, the suffocating atmosphere of fear that had lingered under Vanessa’s presence had vanished entirely.
The scent of fresh white lilies, lavender wax, and baking sourdough filled the long, vaulted corridors.
Downstairs in the kitchen, Mrs. Higgins and the domestic staff were laughing freely as they prepared a private family dinner.
Every employee on the estate had received an official letter at noon announcing that their wages had been increased by forty percent under a new corporate contract.
I stood in the center of the grand drawing room, looking at the massive oil portrait of Don Roberto Moretti mounted above the marble hearth.
The late patriarch had the same fierce, intelligent gray eyes as Luca, but his smile in the painting was warm and generous.
Footsteps sounded softly against the Persian rug behind me.
Luca walked into the room, holding two steaming mugs of spiced cider, having removed his formal suit jacket and tie.
He wore a soft charcoal cashmere sweater with dark trousers, looking relaxed, powerful, and utterly fulfilled.
“He would have loved you, Emily,” Luca said softly, stepping beside me and handing me a mug.
I took the warm porcelain, looking up into his handsome, rugged face.
“Your father?”
“My father,” Luca nodded, gazing up at the portrait.
“He always said that a man who marries for territory is a fool who invites an enemy into his bedroom.”
“He told me to wait until I found a woman who had the courage to tell me the truth when everyone else was nodding in fear.”
A soft, affectionate smile touched my lips as I leaned my shoulder gently against his arm.
“I was terrified, Luca,” I confessed quietly.
“When Vanessa poured that wine down my uniform... my knees were shaking so hard I thought I was going to collapse.”
Luca turned to face me, setting his mug down on the mantelpiece, and reached out with both hands to take mine.
His large, warm fingers gently traced the pulse point at my wrist, his gray eyes shining with an intensity that took my breath away.
“True courage isn't the absence of fear, Emily,” Luca whispered, his thumb stroking my skin.
“True courage is standing your ground when your knees are shaking because you refuse to let an innocent person be destroyed.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, flat legal envelope, placing it into my hands.
“What is this, Luca?” I asked, looking down at the official blue state seal on the parchment.
“Open it,” he smiled gently.
I broke the seal, pulling out the typed document from the Cook County clerk’s office.
My eyes scanned the legal lines, and my breath caught in my throat in sheer, disbelieving shock.
The document was a commercial property deed transferring forty percent of Don Roberto’s restaurant into my legal name.
The remaining sixty percent was divided equally between Luca and Michael.
“Luca... this is your father’s restaurant!” I stammered, looking up at him with wide, tear-filled eyes.
“I can't take forty percent of your family’s heritage!”
“You didn't take it, Emily,” Luca replied softly, his hands moving up to cup my cheeks with infinite tenderness.
“You saved it.”
“Michael and I signed the transfer this morning.”
“You are our partner, our family, and the guardian of our father’s dream.”
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over my lashes, hot and sweet against his warm palms.
“Luca...” I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
“I have loved you since the night you gave me your sweater in the firelight,” Luca murmured, leaning down until his lips were a breath away from mine.
“And I am never letting you go.”

He kissed me then—a deep, fierce, breathtaking kiss that tasted of sweet cider, autumn rain, and an unbreakable promise.
I wrapped my arms around his broad neck, leaning completely into his strength, knowing with absolute certainty that I was finally home.
