Chapter 2 - The Mask Falls

|

The chandelier above the twenty-four guests seemed to hum in the suffocating silence.

Nobody dared to reach for their wine glasses or adjust their silverware.

Elaine Porter stood perfectly still, her sharp clinical gaze fixed squarely on Vivienne Ashford’s draining face.

Vivienne’s polished hand hovered in mid-air over her crystal goblet before she slowly pulled it back toward her lap.

A fragile, brittle chuckle escaped Vivienne’s red lips as she tried to brush off the mounting tension.

“Elaine, you are entirely misinterpreting a very casual private inquiry,” Vivienne stammered, smoothing the silk folds of her designer dress.

“I am not misinterpreting anything,” Elaine countered, her voice carrying the unmistakable weight of a hospital administrator who took her ethics seriously.

“You explicitly asked me if our network’s board could place a permanent administrative flag on Claire’s file across every regional facility,” Elaine stated clearly.

Several guests near the center of the table exchanged uneasy, stunned glances at the brazen accusation.

Marco Santoro remained standing at the head of the banquet table, his tall silhouette casting a dark shadow over the white tablecloth.

The tattoos curling beneath the cuffs of his bespoke black suit seemed to tighten as his broad shoulders stiffened.

His dark eyes did not waver from the woman who wore his multi-carat diamond ring.

“Is that true, Vivienne?” Marco asked, his voice deathly low and devoid of any warmth.

“Marco, please, you know how difficult it is to find dependable domestic help in a home of this size,” Vivienne pleaded, her voice rising in pitch.

“She signed an employment contract with this household, and running off to play nurse leaves us completely understaffed right before our wedding,” she argued desperately.

“She is not playing nurse,” Marco interrupted, his tone cutting through her words like a surgeon’s scalpel.

“She spent five years studying while working sixty hours a week under this roof,” he continued, turning his gaze toward the silver pin gleaming on my uniform.

“You knew about her ambitions, you knew about her offer, and you tried to destroy her future behind my back,” Marco said with chilling precision.

Vivienne’s father, sitting halfway down the table, cleared his throat loudly in an attempt to protect his daughter’s dignity.

“Marco, this is a private family matter that should hardly be aired during a formal celebration,” Julian Ashford spoke up smoothly.

“It became a public matter the moment your daughter stripped a working woman of her dignity in front of my guests,” Marco answered coldly.

He did not even look at Julian Ashford as he delivered the rebuke.

Marco stepped away from his chair and walked slowly around the mahogany table until he stopped beside me.

He stood close enough that I could catch the scent of cedarwood, expensive tobacco, and rain on his jacket.

“Claire,” Marco said, speaking gently enough that the entire room had to strain to hear him.

I forced myself to look up into his striking, intense eyes without letting my chin drop.

“You will not pour another cup of coffee tonight,” Marco told me with absolute certainty.

“You will clock out immediately, your full severance will be transferred to your account by midnight, and your resignation is accepted with my deepest gratitude,” he declared.

Elaine Porter gave me a reassuring, confident nod from across the white linen.

“And on Monday morning at seven sharp, Claire, your locker and your badge will be waiting in our telemetry unit,” Elaine added with a warm smile.

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes, but I refused to let them fall onto my apron.

“Thank you, Ms. Porter,” I whispered, my voice finally finding its footing.

“Thank you, Mr. Santoro.”

I untied my white apron, folded it neatly, and placed it squarely on the serving sideboard.

With my mother’s silver pin resting safely against my heart, I turned around and walked out of the banquet hall without looking back once.
