Chapter 10 - The Disciplinary Trial

|

Julian Ashford did not wait for federal investigators to knock on his mansion door before striking with everything he had left.

The very next morning, a courier delivered an emergency summons from the State Board of Nursing directly to my temporary hotel room.

Vivienne and Julian Ashford had formally filed a sworn criminal grievance against my nursing license.

They accused me of stealing eighty vials of surgical fentanyl during the trauma intake of Leo Santoro on Monday afternoon.

If the board found probable cause during the preliminary emergency hearing, my license would be permanently revoked before my career even began.

At two o'clock that afternoon, I sat at the respondent’s table inside the marble-lined hearing chamber of the state licensing board.

I wore a modest black pantsuit, my hair pulled back into a neat, professional bun, with my mother’s silver pin catching the fluorescent light.

Across the aisle sat Vivienne Ashford, looking smug and triumphant beside three high-powered corporate defense attorneys.

Her father sat behind her in the gallery, his arms crossed over his chest with an arrogant smirk plastered on his face.

Three senior board members sat behind the elevated judicial bench, reviewing the thick stack of fraudulent complaints submitted by Ashford’s lawyers.

“We are here to review allegations of gross pharmaceutical misconduct against registered nurse Claire Bennett,” the board president announced.

Vivienne’s lead attorney stood up, smoothing his tailored suit with theatrical self-importance.

“Members of the board, Miss Bennett is an opportunist with a history of domestic service in organized crime households,” the attorney argued loudly.

“During the chaotic admission of Leo Santoro, she utilized unauthorized access to divert controlled narcotics into her personal possession.”

“We demand the immediate emergency suspension of her license to protect public safety,” he concluded dramatically.

The board president turned her stern, bespectacled gaze down toward me.

“Nurse Bennett, do you have legal representation or documentation to present to this panel?” the president inquired.

Before I could open my mouth to answer, the heavy double doors at the back of the chamber swung wide open.

Elaine Porter strode into the hearing room, accompanied by Dr. Robert Vance, the chief attending trauma surgeon of St. Agnes Hospital.

Behind them walked two uniformed federal agents from the Department of Health and Human Services.

“Nurse Bennett does not need private defense attorneys, Madame President,” Elaine Porter announced with ringing authority.

“The hospital administration and the Department of Trauma Surgery are here to present the official institutional record.”

Vivienne’s smug smile vanished instantly as Dr. Vance approached the evidence podium with a thick, sealed binder.

“I am Dr. Robert Vance, lead trauma physician on duty during the intake in question,” the surgeon testified under oath.

“Nurse Claire Bennett’s split-second diagnosis of a tension pneumothorax saved my patient’s life after my resident froze.”

“Furthermore, our electronic Pyxis medication dispensary records show that Nurse Bennett never accessed the controlled narcotics locker once during that shift.”

“Every milligram of medication administered was signed off digitally under my personal biometric fingerprint,” Dr. Vance declared firmly.

Elaine Porter then stepped up to the microphone, her eyes fixing Julian Ashford with complete disdain.

“What our comprehensive internal audit did discover this morning,” Elaine announced, handing documents to the board panel, “is something far worse.”

“We uncovered systemic falsification of pharmaceutical supply manifests dating back five years, totaling over fourteen million dollars.”

“All the missing medications were siphoned through Ashford Distribution Holdings,” Elaine revealed, pointing directly at Julian Ashford.

The two federal agents in the gallery immediately stood up and walked toward Julian Ashford’s bench.

“Julian Ashford, you are under arrest for grand pharmaceutical fraud, interstate smuggling, and witness tampering,” the lead agent announced loudly.

Julian’s face drained of all color as the agents pulled his arms behind his back and clicked heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Vivienne shrieked in horror, jumping to her feet as the entire hearing room dissolved into absolute pandemonium.

The board president slammed her wooden gavel down three times with thunderous finality.

“Order in this chamber!” the president shouted over the uproar.

“The complaint against Nurse Claire Bennett is dismissed with extreme prejudice as a fraudulent and malicious filing.”

“Nurse Bennett, this board commends your clinical heroism, and your license remains in immaculate standing.”

I sat back in my chair, feeling a warm tear of pure vindication spill down my cheek as my mother squeezed my hand from behind.
