Chapter 3 - The Cold War in Silk

|

The Briarport Yacht Club charity gala was an annual spectacle of old money, heavy diamonds, and polished malice.

Every prominent family in the state occupied a table overlooking the black Atlantic waters.

Clara arrived on Roman’s arm wearing a midnight-blue silk gown that he had ordered from Paris three weeks earlier.

Her blonde hair was swept up into an elegant twist that exposed the delicate line of her neck and her pearl earrings.

Roman wore a custom black tuxedo that accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding presence.

To any outside observer, they looked like the undisputed golden couple of the eastern seaboard.

Roman kept his large, warm hand resting possessively against the small of her back as they navigated the crowded ballroom.

Every time his fingers brushed through the silk of her dress, a sharp tremor shot through Clara’s spine.

Yet whenever someone approached to offer congratulations on their marriage, Clara performed her role with chilling perfection.

She smiled with practiced warmth, laughed at dry corporate jokes, and praised Roman’s relentless dedication to the community.

Roman leaned down beside her ear, his breath warm against her temple.

"You are torturing me," he murmured under his breath while smiling at a local bank president.

"I am delivering the performance you paid for, Mr. Vale," she replied without breaking her radiant smile.

"You know that wasn't what I meant in the library," he said, his grip on her waist tightening slightly.

"Your uncle is watching us from thirty feet away," she said softly, tilting her head to maintain the illusion of an intimate whisper.

"If you drop your facade, you hand him the weapon he needs to break your grandfather's trust."

Roman stiffened, realizing that Clara was playing the game far better than he was.

Before he could respond, Victor Vale approached their table carrying a glass of vintage scotch, flanked by Celeste Arden.

Celeste looked stunning in a backless crimson dress that clung to every curve of her body.

"Roman, darling, you two look positively exhausted," Celeste purred, letting her fingers graze Roman’s sleeve.

"Maintaining appearances must be so utterly draining when you aren't accustomed to the spotlight."

Victor gave Clara an oily, calculating smile that made her skin crawl.

"Clara, my dear, court reporting must feel dreadfully boring compared to hosting high-society galas."

"Not at all, Victor," Clara answered smoothly, meeting his gaze with unblinking confidence.

"In court, I spend forty hours a week recording corrupt men who think their wealth makes them immune to perjury."

Victor’s smile tightened at the edges, and Celeste pulled her hand back from Roman’s jacket as if she had been burned.

"It turns out that liars always use the same predictable patterns," Clara added, taking a sip of sparkling water.

Roman felt an involuntary surge of pride in his chest as he watched his young wife dismantle his uncle in public.

Celeste cleared her throat, clearly irritated by Clara's poise, and gestured toward the powder room corridor.

"Clara, come with me for a moment," Celeste said with honeyed venom.

"We women really ought to refresh our lipstick together."

Clara nodded gracefully, stepped away from Roman’s side, and followed Celeste down the secluded, mirrored hallway.

The moment the heavy restroom door clicked shut behind them, Celeste turned around, her sweet expression vanishing into venomous contempt.

"You think you’re clever, don't you?" Celeste hissed, stepping within inches of Clara's face.

"Roman will never love a girl whose father died covered in engine grease on the Briarport docks."

Clara did not flinch, her voice dropping into the icy, precise cadence she used to read murder indictments.

"Your family's shipping company declared bankruptcy in June, Celeste."

"You are living on borrowed lines of credit, and Roman is the only lifeline keeping your father out of debtor's court."

Celeste’s jaw dropped in absolute shock.

"I transcribe the maritime restructuring dockets, Celeste," Clara whispered calmly, smoothing her silk skirt.

"I know every secret in this city, while you only know how to wear expensive dresses on credit."

Clara turned on her heel and walked out of the room, leaving Celeste trembling in utter humiliation.
