Chapter 9 - The Spark Between Scars

The ride back to the Tribeca penthouse was enveloped in heavy, suffocating silence.
The adrenaline that had carried me through the gala began to drain away, leaving my limbs shaking with exhaustion and dread.
As soon as the private elevator doors sealed us inside the penthouse, my knees gave out completely.
Dante caught me before I hit the marble floor, his powerful arms scooping me up effortlessly against his chest.
"I've got you, Elena," he murmured, his deep voice soothing the chaos inside my head.
"You were magnificent tonight."
"I was terrified," I admitted, burying my face into the crook of his neck as he carried me toward the living room terrace.
He set me down gently onto the cushioned lounge chair overlooking the sparkling city lights.
Orion immediately jumped up onto the foot of the lounger, resting his warm, heavy body over my trembling legs.
Dante unbuttoned his tuxedo jacket and tossed it onto a side table, loosening his black silk tie.
He walked over to a heated cabinet, retrieved a soft cashmere blanket, and draped it carefully around my shoulders.
"Fear is natural when you confront the devil, Olivia," he said softly, sitting on the marble ledge beside me.
"What matters is that you didn't flinch."
I pulled the blanket tightly around myself, gazing out at the endless sea of Manhattan lights.
"Romano looked at me like he wanted to rip my throat out," I whispered.
"He won't get within ten feet of you as long as I draw breath," Dante replied with absolute certainty.
I turned my head to look at him, noticing the strain around his jaw and the dark shadows under his gray eyes.
"Why did you do all of this, Dante?"
"You risked your entire empire tonight just to announce my name."
"You could have kept me hidden in a safehouse in another state, far away from all of this danger."
Dante went quiet, his gaze dropping to his hands.
Slowly, he began to unbutton the top buttons of his white dress shirt, pulling the fabric aside.
Across his collarbone and running down the entire left side of his muscular chest was a horrific network of silver, jagged burn scars.
I gasped softly, my fingers rising instinctively toward the marks before I stopped myself, not wanting to overstep.
"Go ahead," Dante whispered, his eyes locking onto mine with raw vulnerability.
"Touch it."
My trembling fingertips grazed the hardened, scarred skin over his chest.
His heartbeat beneath my palm was steady, heavy, and intensely alive.
"I was eighteen years old when Romano's men torched the Valenti manor," Dante said, his voice cracking slightly with long-suppressed emotion.
"I ran into the flames to pull Julian out, but a burning beam pinned him to the floor."
"He shoved me back toward the door and begged me to save his daughter."
"I crawled through the smoke into the nursery, but your room was already an inferno."
"I reached into the burning crib and found only charred blankets."
Dante looked up at me, a solitary tear glistening in the corner of his cold gray eyes.
"These scars are the reminder of the night I failed the only father I ever knew."
"I built this syndicate with blood, iron, and ruthless violence for one single reason: to destroy everyone responsible for that night."
"And then you walked into that restaurant, petted my dog, and brought light back into a world I thought was completely dead."
My breath caught in my throat at the sheer intensity of his confession.
"Dante..." I whispered, leaning closer until only inches separated our faces.
His large hand rose gently to cup my cheek, his rough thumb brushing across my cheekbone with breathtaking tenderness.
"You aren't just an obligation to me anymore, Olivia," he breathed, his eyes searching mine.
"You are my entire world."
Before I could reply, his lips met mine in a slow, searing kiss that shattered every fear and uncertainty inside my soul.
The kiss was fierce yet protective, tasting of scotch, danger, and a promise carved in stone.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, Orion let out a soft, contented rumble from the end of the lounger.
In the middle of the darkest underworld war, I knew without a shadow of a doubt that I was home.
