Chapter 7 - The Woman They Wanted Everyone to Hate|

The federal prosecutor's office occupied several floors of an ordinary-looking building in Manhattan.

There were no marble staircases, no private elevators reserved for powerful families, and no staff members waiting to take Grace Mercer's coat.

She found the simplicity strangely comforting.

For once, the room did not seem designed to remind her how important her husband was.

Assistant United States Attorney Elena Torres entered carrying a thick folder.

She was in her forties, with dark hair pulled into a neat bun and a calm expression that did not reveal much.

Raina stood when she entered.

"Ms. Torres."

"Ms. Brooks."

Elena shook Grace's hand.

"Thank you for coming voluntarily."

Grace sat.

"I should have come sooner."

"You're here now."

Elena opened the folder.

"I want to make something clear before we begin."

Grace nodded.

"We are investigating suspected financial fraud, theft of charitable assets, and threats against potential witnesses."

She looked directly at Grace.

"Your name appears on several documents."

"I know."

"That means we have to examine your involvement as carefully as everyone else's."

"I understand."

Raina placed a prepared statement on the table.

"My client has documented her concerns for months and is prepared to provide the supporting records."

Elena accepted it.

Then she turned back to Grace.

"Why didn't you report the missing money immediately?"

Grace considered the question.

"At first, I believed there had been a mistake."

"And later?"

"I believed my husband would help me correct it."

"Did he?"

Grace lowered her eyes.

"No."

Elena waited.

Grace continued.

"Caleb is accustomed to people obeying him."

She paused.

"I spent eleven years mistaking that for strength."

Elena's expression softened slightly.

"Tell me about Benjamin Alvarez."

Grace explained their conversations.

The missing shipments.

The altered signatures.

The night Ben showed her a delivery record bearing the name of a nurse who had not worked at the receiving clinic for years.

She described how frightened he had been.

She also admitted that she had urged him to keep copies of suspicious records.

Elena wrote something down.

"Did you ask him to break into any system or remove anything he wasn't authorized to access?"

"No."

"Did you pay him?"

"No."

"Did you promise him anything?"

Grace hesitated.

"I promised that if he told the truth, I wouldn't abandon him."

Elena looked up.

"That's a difficult promise."

Grace's voice tightened.

"I know that now."

The interview continued for nearly two hours.

They reviewed the six transfers, the property records, and the photograph of Oliver Shaw wearing the replica ring.

Then Elena's assistant entered and whispered something in her ear.

Elena closed the folder.

"There's someone who would like to speak with you."

Grace turned.

The door opened.

A thin man with dark circles beneath his eyes stepped inside.

Grace rose so quickly her chair scraped the floor.

"Ben?"

Benjamin Alvarez stood in the doorway.

He looked exhausted.

There was a bandage above his eyebrow.

But he was alive.

"Oh, thank God."

Grace covered her mouth.

Ben gave her a weak smile.

"Sorry I scared everybody."

Elena explained that Ben had contacted investigators through an attorney after learning that his wife and daughter had reached a secure location.

He had been hiding in a motel outside the city.

His abandoned truck had been found after two men confronted him at a delivery stop and threatened his family.

Ben had escaped, but he feared returning home would put Rosa and Ella in danger.

Grace approached him.

"Your family has been worried sick."

"I know."

His eyes filled.

"I just wanted to make sure they were safe."

Grace reached for his hand.

"They are receiving help."

Ben nodded.

Then his expression changed.

"Mrs. Mercer, there's something I need to tell you."

"Anything."

"That man in the photograph?"

"Oliver Shaw?"

"Yes."

Ben swallowed.

"He wasn't just watching the warehouse."

"What was he doing?"

"He was collecting information about you."

Grace went still.

Ben continued.

"He had photographs of your car, your schedule, the places you visited."

"Why?"

"Because Miles wanted to know how much you had discovered."

Grace looked toward Elena.

Ben's voice dropped.

"And when Miles found out you were going to leave the estate, he said something I'll never forget."

"What?"

"He said you were easier to destroy outside the house than inside it."

A chill traveled down Grace's spine.

Elena asked Ben to explain the circumstances of the conversation.

As he began speaking, Raina's phone vibrated repeatedly.

She glanced at the screen.

Her expression darkened.

"Grace."

Grace turned.

"What?"

"There's a news story about you."

Raina showed her the headline.

MERCER CHARITY SCANDAL: TRUSTEE GRACE MERCER LINKED TO MISSING MILLIONS AND SECRET COMPANION.

Below the headline were two photographs.

One showed Grace leaving the Mercer estate in the rain.

The other showed Oliver Shaw outside the warehouse, wearing the replica ring.

The article claimed that Grace had maintained a secret relationship with an unidentified businessman while overseeing suspicious financial transactions.

It suggested she had fled her marriage to avoid scrutiny.

And it quoted an anonymous source close to the Mercer family.

Grace stared at the screen.

Eleven years of marriage.

Seven years of charitable work.

Thousands of hours spent helping families who had nowhere else to turn.

Reduced to a headline designed to make strangers despise her.

Raina placed a hand on her arm.

"We can respond."

Grace shook her head.

"Not yet."

Elena looked at her.

"You're under no obligation to answer an anonymous accusation immediately."

Grace nodded.

Then she looked at Ben.

"I need you to tell them everything."

He straightened.

"I will."

"Even the parts that might be uncomfortable?"

"Especially those."

Grace looked down at the headline again.

She had spent years protecting the Mercer name because she believed protecting the family meant protecting her marriage.

Now that same name was being used to destroy her.

Her phone began vibrating.

Caleb was calling.

She watched until the screen went dark.

A voicemail notification appeared.

Then a text message arrived.

Grace, I saw the article.

A second message followed.

I know it's a lie.

She stared.

A third message appeared.

I'm going to correct what I can. I don't expect you to come home.

Grace's eyes filled unexpectedly.

Not because she believed everything was fixed.

Not because his words erased the betrayal.

But because it was the first message in years that did not tell her what she had to do.

May you like

She put the phone away.

And for the first time since walking out of the Mercer estate, she began to believe the truth might survive the people trying to bury it.
