Chapter 9 - The Other Woman Finally Tells the Truth|

Vanessa Hale had imagined becoming Caleb Mercer's wife more times than she cared to admit.

She had imagined the diamond ring.

The grand wedding.

The newspaper photographs.

The enormous house where servants remembered how she liked her coffee.

What she had never imagined was sitting alone in a doctor's office, staring at an ultrasound photograph while wondering whether her child would grow up knowing she had helped destroy another woman's marriage.

The technician had been kind.

The doctor had assured her that the baby appeared healthy.

Vanessa should have been happy.

Instead, she cried in the parking garage until her hands stopped shaking.

Her phone vibrated.

Miles.

She ignored it.

He called again.

Then a message arrived.

We need to discuss your next statement.

Vanessa stared at the words.

Another appeared.

Don't forget what happens if Grace decides to drag everyone down with her.

She closed her eyes.

For months, Miles had told her that Grace was an obstacle.

A woman who would never willingly divorce Caleb.

A woman who had grown accustomed to the privileges of marriage.

A woman who would use the foundation to make Vanessa look cruel and selfish.

Vanessa had believed him because believing him made her own choices easier to justify.

But now the truth was becoming impossible to ignore.

Grace had walked away without asking for a single expensive possession.

She had warned Caleb about the missing money.

And she had continued protecting families who had been harmed by people connected to the Mercer business.

Vanessa thought about the duplicate wedding ring.

She remembered the day Miles had asked her to help Oliver Shaw obtain photographs of Grace's jewelry.

He had called it insurance.

A way to prove Grace was not as innocent as she appeared.

Vanessa had provided the photographs.

She had even approved an invoice from the jeweler who manufactured the replica.

At the time, she told herself she was protecting her future.

Now she understood she had been manufacturing evidence against a woman whose only crime was refusing to disappear quietly.

Vanessa looked at the ultrasound photograph again.

Then she made a phone call.

Not to Miles.

Not to Caleb.

To an attorney.

By late afternoon, she was sitting inside a conference room with her own lawyer, Olivia Hart, and Assistant United States Attorney Elena Torres.

Olivia had warned her that cooperation would not automatically protect her from legal consequences.

Vanessa understood.

For the first time in months, she was willing to accept that.

"I helped them," she said.

Elena opened her notebook.

"Helped whom?"

"Miles Mercer and Oliver Shaw."

"How?"

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

"I gave them information about Grace's schedule."

She looked down.

"I also arranged the replica of her wedding ring."

Elena remained silent.

Vanessa continued.

"Miles wanted photographs that would make people believe Grace was having an affair."

"Did you know the allegations were false?"

"Yes."

The word seemed to take something out of her.

She began crying.

"I knew."

Elena asked her to explain the purpose of the photographs.

Vanessa described conversations about removing Grace from the foundation's board.

She explained how Miles planned to question Grace's judgment, freeze her financial access, and portray her departure as evidence of wrongdoing.

Then she revealed something the investigators had not yet established.

"Miles wasn't only trying to control the foundation."

Elena looked up.

"What was his larger objective?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"He wanted Caleb removed from the company."

Silence filled the room.

"How?"

"He knew the federal investigation could eventually reach Caleb's legitimate businesses and his other operations."

She hesitated.

"Miles planned to use that investigation to force an emergency transfer of corporate authority."

Elena's expression sharpened.

"Do you have evidence?"

Vanessa opened her purse.

She removed her phone and a printed copy of a proposed board resolution.

"These messages are from Miles."

She pushed them across the table.

"He said that once Grace was discredited, nobody would believe her warnings."

"And then?"

"Then he would release selected information about Caleb's operations and claim the company needed new leadership."

Elena studied the document.

Vanessa's voice broke.

"He was going to destroy both of them."

Across Manhattan, Grace was leaving a meeting with Raina when Elena called.

The prosecutor did not disclose details beyond what she was authorized to share.

But she explained that a new witness had come forward with significant information.

Grace understood who it was when she entered the building's hallway and saw Vanessa sitting beside an attorney.

For a long moment, neither woman moved.

Vanessa stood.

"Grace."

Grace stopped.

She had imagined this confrontation many times.

Sometimes she imagined shouting.

Sometimes she imagined asking how Vanessa could smile across a dinner table while sleeping with her husband.

But now, looking at the pregnant woman before her, Grace felt something colder than anger.

She felt exhausted.

Vanessa approached cautiously.

"I told them everything."

Grace looked at her.

"Why?"

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"Because I don't want my child growing up surrounded by lies."

Grace nodded slowly.

"That's a good reason."

Vanessa looked relieved.

Then Grace continued.

"But it doesn't change what you did."

The relief disappeared.

"I know."

"Do you?"

Grace's voice remained calm.

"You sat in my dining room and asked me to handle my husband's betrayal with dignity."

Vanessa began crying.

"I was wrong."

"You watched him humiliate me."

"I know."

"You helped people manufacture evidence against me."

Vanessa lowered her head.

"Yes."

Grace stepped closer.

"And now you're telling the truth because the consequences have reached you."

Vanessa could not answer.

Grace's eyes filled.

"I hope you become a good mother."

Vanessa looked up.

"I mean that."

Grace paused.

"But you don't get to use your child to ask me to forget what you did."

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Grace walked past her.

Then she stopped and turned.

"One more thing."

Vanessa looked back.

"That baby deserves a life that isn't built on somebody else's suffering."

Grace's voice softened.

"Make sure you give your child that."

She left without waiting for an answer.

Vanessa stood in the hallway for a long time.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message from Miles appeared.

I hear you've been talking to the wrong people.

Another followed.

You always were too sentimental.

Vanessa felt her stomach tighten.

Then a final message appeared.

If I lose everything, don't expect Caleb's child to be protected from the consequences.

She stared at the screen.

For the first time, Vanessa understood that Miles had never considered her a partner.

She had been another piece on the board.

And the only way to protect her unborn child was to help bring down the man who believed he owned everyone.
