Chapter 7 - Fractured Loyalties

The war room in the basement of the DeLuca estate was thick with the scent of stale espresso, gunpowder solvent, and rising hostility. Maps of the Chicago riverfront, tactical satellite printouts, and wiretap transcripts were pinned against the corkboards.

Enzo sat at the center of the iron table. Harper sat directly to his right, reviewing a stack of shipping manifests with a red highlighter in hand. Her presence in the inner sanctum was an open scandal among the family's senior capos, who stood along the perimeter of the room like thunderclouds waiting to strike.

Salvatore DeLuca, his face bruised and his pride shattered from his public humiliation on Sunday, had returned from the Gary scrap yards without permission. He stood at the far end of the table, flanked by three older capos whose loyalty to Enzo’s deceased father had always outweighed their respect for Enzo.

"This is madness, Enzo," Salvatore snarled, slapping a heavy palm onto the table. "You've got the daughter of the man who killed Nathan sitting in our war room, looking at our dock logistics! Have you lost your damn mind? Or has the little blonde turned your brains to mush?"

Enzo didn't blink. He casually marked a line on a manifest before raising his eyes. "Salvatore, I told you that your presence was restricted to Indiana. You have ten seconds to explain why you are breathing my air before I have Marco put you in a shipping container."

"Because the family is talking!" Salvatore yelled, stepping forward, his eyes wild with ambitious fury. "The Morettis hit the Art Institute! They tried to kill you in broad daylight, and instead of burning down the South Side, you’re spending your time holding hands with Preston Whitcomb’s daughter! Look at her! She’s playing you! How do we know she isn't feeding our routes back to her old man?"

Harper didn't look up from her manifest. "If I were feeding your routes to my father, Mr. DeLuca, I wouldn't have just flagged the fact that your Calumet distribution center has a nine-million-dollar inventory discrepancy that you personally signed off on last Tuesday."

The room went dead silent.

Salvatore froze, his face draining of color. "What did you say?"

Harper calmly slid the red-lined manifest across the table, spinning it so it landed directly in front of the senior capos.

"Section 4, subsection B," Harper said, her tone cool, precise, and lethally corporate. "Three shipments of high-grade copper wire and commercial pharmaceuticals were rerouted from the DeLuca docks to a warehouse on 103rd Street. A warehouse owned by a shell corporation called *Vanguard Logistics*."

She looked directly at Salvatore, her blue eyes narrowing into razor blades. "Vanguard Logistics is registered to your brother-in-law, Salvatore. And the holding company that underwrote the lease is Aegis Harbor Capital. Moretti’s fund."

A collective murmur erupted among the capos. Marco stepped forward, his hand resting conspicuously on his sidearm, his eyes locked onto Salvatore.

Enzo didn't move. He leaned back in his chair, his dark eyes fixed on his cousin with terrifying stillness.

"You were complaining about Nathan's memory on Sunday, Salvatore," Enzo said, his voice dropping into a horrific, low purr. "You claimed you were insulted that I wasn't avenging my brother fast enough. But it turns out you were the one who opened the back door for the Morettis at Calumet."

"It's a lie!" Salvatore shouted, his hand dropping toward the pocket of his heavy leather coat. "She’s framing me! She’s turning the family against each other to save her father!"

Salvatore never cleared leather.

Marco moved with lightning speed, stepping behind Salvatore and driving a heavy, steel-tipped tactical baton directly into the back of his knee. Salvatore roared in pain, collapsing onto the concrete floor. Before he could recover, Marco’s boot was pressed hard against his throat, pinning him to the ground while another soldier disarmed him.

Enzo stood up slowly. He walked around the table until he was standing over his writhing cousin.

"Nathan was naive," Enzo whispered, looking down at the traitor with an expression of pure, frozen contempt. "He thought everyone had a soul. I never suffered from that delusion, Salvatore."

Enzo gestured slightly to Marco. "Take him to the basement in Cicero. Keep him alive until we take the docks tonight. I want Carmine Moretti to see what we do to his business partners."

"Enzo! Enzo, I'm your blood!" Salvatore screamed, his voice scraping against the concrete as Marco and two guards dragged him down the hallway. "You're tearing the family apart for a Whitcomb! It will destroy you!"

The heavy steel door slammed shut, cutting off the echoes of Salvatore’s screams.

The remaining capos stood frozen, their heads bowed, terrified to meet Enzo’s gaze.

Enzo turned his attention back to Harper. She was still sitting at the table, her red highlighter resting quietly on the paper, her breathing controlled.

"Gentlemen, clear the room," Enzo ordered.

The capos hurried out without a word, practically tripping over themselves to leave the presence of their boss.

When the room was empty, Enzo walked over to Harper’s chair. He placed his hands on the armrests, leaning down until his face was inches from hers.

"You found that discrepancy this morning," Enzo noted quietly.

"I found it an hour ago," Harper admitted, meeting his intense gaze. "I knew Salvatore was going to challenge you today. I wanted to make sure you had the blade ready before he swung his."

Enzo looked at her—at the brilliant, calculating mind hidden behind that porcelain facade, at the quiet courage that had just saved his syndicate from an internal mutiny. A fierce, possessive warmth ignited in his chest, consuming the last remnants of the cold vengeance that had defined him.

"You are a dangerous woman, Harper DeLuca," he murmured, using her married name for the first time.

A faint shiver ran through Harper at the sound of the name, but her eyes did not waver. "I had a dangerous teacher, Enzo. But tonight, this ends. Preston knows Salvatore failed. He knows the Morettis will cut their losses. He will run."

"He won't make it to the state line," Enzo promised, his hand gently cupping the back of her neck, his thumb caressing the soft skin of her jawline. "Tonight, we take everything from him. And tomorrow, you will finally be free."

Harper looked into his eyes, her lips parting slightly. "And what if I don't want to be free of you, Enzo?"

Enzo’s breath caught. Before he could answer, his phone buzzed violently against the metal table.

He picked it up, glancing at the encrypted screen. It was an intercepted transmission from the private airfield in Gary, Indiana.

*Target acquired: Preston Whitcomb boarded Gulfstream G550. Destination: Cayman Islands. Departure: sixty minutes.*

Enzo looked at Harper, his expression turning into absolute iron. "Get your coat."
