Chapter 9 - The Siege of Gold Coast

The peace lasted less than forty-eight hours.

At three o'clock on Thursday morning, the silence of the DeLuca estate was shattered by a massive concussive explosion that ripped the wrought-iron security gates off their hinges.

The blast shook the master suite, sending plaster dust raining down from the ceiling. Alarms wailed like banshees across the estate, red emergency spotlights strobing through the fractured windows.

Enzo bolted upright, instantly rolling out of bed and grabbing his Benelli M4 shotgun from the secure rack behind the headboard. Harper was already awake, throwing on a tactical fleece and reaching for the handgun Enzo had taught her to strip and clean just the night before.

"Marco!" Enzo barked into his encrypted comms unit. "Report!"

Static crackled, followed by the deafening roar of automatic gunfire. *"Boss! It’s not Moretti! It’s a mercenary strike team—at least thirty men! Heavy armor, military-grade gear! They breached the south perimeter and hit the generator shed!"*

"Who hired them?" Enzo demanded, racking a shell into the chamber.

*"We don't know! They aren't local—they’re speaking Russian and Eastern European dialects! They're moving toward the main house!"*

The comms cut out with a burst of static.

Enzo looked at Harper. The fear was there in her eyes, but beneath it lay that same unyielding steel.

"The panic room in the sub-basement," Enzo said, grabbing her arm. "You go down through the service dumbwaiter. The walls are six-inch reinforced titanium. Even RPGs won't crack it."

"No," Harper said firmly, checking the magazine of her pistol with practiced efficiency. "If they breach the main floor, they’ll cut the oxygen scrubbers to the vault. I know how corporate extract teams work, Enzo—this isn't a hit squad. This is a retrieval operation."

Enzo froze. "Retrieval?"

"Preston’s offshore accounts," Harper realized with sudden, horrific clarity. "I bypassed three international security firewalls when I decrypted Aegis Harbor Capital. The Morettis weren't the top of the food chain, Enzo. My father was laundering money for the *Bratva*—the Russian syndicate operating out of New York. They aren't here for Preston. They’re here for the encryption keys, and they're here for the only person who knows the master password."

She looked at him, her blue eyes wide. "They’re here for me."

Before Enzo could respond, a burst of heavy-caliber rifle fire shredded the heavy mahogany bedroom door. Wood splinters flew like shrapnel.

Enzo threw Harper behind the solid stone fireplace, dropping to one knee and firing two deafening blasts from his shotgun through the shattered doorway. A scream echoed from the hallway as a heavily armored mercenary collapsed backward.

"Move!" Enzo roared, pulling Harper toward the private terrace corridor.

The mansion had become a war zone. Downstairs, the DeLuca guards were engaging in brutal, close-quarters combat. The smell of cordite, burning upholstery, and blood choked the air.

As they reached the top of the grand staircase, two masked operators in gray winter camouflage turned the corner, their rifles snapping toward Enzo.

Harper didn't hesitate. Stepping out from behind Enzo’s flank, she raised her pistol with both hands, squeezing the trigger three times in rapid, disciplined succession.

Two rounds hit the lead operator's tactical vest, staggering him; the third struck him clean beneath the chin. He dropped instantly.

Enzo eliminated the second man with a devastating point-blank shotgun blast, clearing the landing.

He looked at Harper, an adrenaline-fueled grin cutting across his rugged face. "Remind me never to make you angry."

"Keep moving," she breathed, her hands steady as she reloaded.

They fought their way down the grand marble staircase, step by blood-soaked step. The DeLuca family soldiers rallied around their don, forming a protective wedge as they pushed the remaining mercenaries toward the shattered foyer.

Outside, the pre-dawn sky was illuminated by the flashing red-and-blue lights of dozens of law enforcement vehicles screaming down the private shoreline drive, accompanied by the thundering beat of tactical police helicopters overhead.

The surviving mercenaries, realizing their window of extraction had slammed shut, scattered into the snowy woods, leaving behind twelve dead and a ruined estate.

Enzo stood in the center of the grand foyer, surrounded by shattered marble, broken glass, and the bodies of his enemies. His tuxedo shirt was torn, soaked in blood and sweat, his breathing heavy.

Harper stood beside him, lowering her weapon, looking around at the destruction of the fortress she had once thought would be her tomb.

Gianna DeLuca emerged from the lower shelter, surrounded by three guards. The matriarch looked at the carnage, then looked at Harper, taking in the empty shell casings at Harper’s feet, the blood on her hands, and the resolute, unbroken stance of the woman she had despised.

Gianna walked slowly across the ruined foyer. She stopped in front of Harper, looking into her eyes for a long, silent moment.

Slowly, without a word, Gianna reached out and gently rested her frail, jeweled hand over Harper’s blood-stained fingers, giving them a single, firm squeeze. It was an acknowledgment that words could never capture: Harper was no longer an enemy. She was a DeLuca.
