Chapter 14 - The Proposal Nobody Saw Coming|

One year after the Bellweather incident, the community training center opened its doors.

It stood inside a renovated brick building in South Philadelphia.

Bright windows overlooked the street.

Fresh mats covered the floors.

And a large sign hung above the entrance.

THE GRACE VALE CENTER FOR COURAGE

Beneath it were smaller words.

Strength begins when someone believes in you.

Evie stood outside the building with tears in her eyes.

She'd helped design the program.

She'd interviewed instructors.

Developed safety procedures.

Coordinated volunteer schedules.

And worked with community organizations to make sure the center served people who actually needed it.

It wasn't a vanity project.

It was real work.

And it mattered.

Tommy, the seventeen-year-old busboy from Bellweather, had become one of the first volunteers.

He'd finished high school.

Started community college.

And now helped organize youth programs.

When Evie saw him carrying chairs into the training room, she smiled.

“Look at you.”

Tommy laughed.

“Still carrying things, apparently.”

She grinned.

“But nobody's grabbing your collar.”

His smile softened.

“No.”

Then he looked at her.

“Because you taught me I don't have to let people treat me like that.”

Evie's eyes filled.

“I'm proud of you.”

He smiled.

“Thanks, Evie.”

The opening ceremony began at noon.

Local families gathered outside.

Students demonstrated basic self-defense movements.

Community leaders spoke about confidence, safety, and mentorship.

Then Roman approached the microphone.

He wore a black suit with his sleeves rolled up.

His tattoos were visible along his forearms.

He looked every bit the intimidating businessman Philadelphia knew.

But when he began speaking, his voice was warm.

“A year ago, I watched a woman half the size of one of my men refuse to be intimidated.”

The crowd laughed.

Evie covered her face.

Roman smiled.

“She didn't know I was watching closely enough to remember every second.”

He looked toward her.

“But I was.”

His expression softened.

“Back then, I thought strength meant making people afraid of me.”

He paused.

“Evie taught me something different.”

The crowd grew quiet.

“Strength means knowing when to stand up for someone who can't stand up for themselves.”

Evie's eyes filled.

“And sometimes it means admitting you were wrong.”

Roman looked toward Tommy.

“Sometimes the bravest person in the room isn't the loudest.”

He smiled.

“Sometimes she's the waitress everyone underestimated.”

Applause filled the street.

Evie wiped her cheeks.

Then Lily rushed toward her.

“Aunt Mercy!”

Evie crouched.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Daddy said you have to come to the garden tonight.”

Evie frowned.

“Why?”

Lily grinned.

“It's a surprise.”

Roman looked away.

Evie narrowed her eyes.

“Roman?”

He smiled innocently.

“What?”

She laughed.

“Nothing.”

That evening, Evie arrived at the Vale estate just before sunset.

The garden had been decorated with tiny white lights.

Fresh flowers lined the path.

And beneath the old oak tree stood Roman.

He wore a black shirt.

His dark hair was neatly styled.

And for the first time since Evie had known him, he looked genuinely nervous.

“Evie.”

She smiled.

“Roman.”

He approached.

“Would you walk with me?”

She nodded.

They followed the path toward Grace's favorite rose garden.

Roman stopped beside a wooden bench.

For a moment, he looked toward the house.

Then turned toward Evie.

“A year ago, you knocked Derek Shaw onto a restaurant floor.”

She laughed.

“Not my finest career move.”

Roman grinned.

“Depends who you ask.”

Then his expression grew serious.

“I thought you were a mystery I needed to solve.”

Evie's smile softened.

“And?”

He took her hands.

“You were.”

Her heart began racing.

“But not the way I expected.”

He looked toward the garden.

“You helped me find the truth about Grace. You helped Lily remember that being brave doesn't mean never being scared.”

His voice trembled.

“And you helped me become a better father.”

Evie's eyes filled.

Roman continued.

“I spent years believing love was something I could lose forever.”

He looked into her eyes.

“Then you showed me that love can grow again.”

He took a breath.

“I don't want to spend the rest of my life hiding from happiness.”

Evie stopped breathing.

Roman reached into his pocket.

A small velvet box rested in his hand.

He slowly knelt.

“Evelyn Mercer.”

Tears streamed down her face.

He opened the box.

Inside was a beautiful diamond ring.

Simple.

Elegant.

Perfect.

“Will you marry me?”

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Then she laughed through her tears.

“Yes.”

Roman's eyes widened.

“Yes?”

“Yes, Roman.”

He stood and pulled her into his arms.

They kissed beneath the oak tree.

Then a small voice shouted from behind the roses.

“I KNEW IT!”

They turned.

Lily stood beside Tommy.

Several close friends and family members were smiling.

Roman laughed.

“Were you spying?”

Lily grinned.

“Only a little.”

Evie knelt and opened her arms.

Lily ran toward her.

“Does this mean you're staying forever?”

Evie smiled through tears.

“If that's what you want.”

Lily hugged her tightly.

“I've wanted that since you came back.”

Evie closed her eyes.

May you like

And for the first time in six years, she no longer felt like the woman who had disappeared.

She felt like someone who had finally found her way home.
