Chapter 10 - The Trial That Finally Cleared Evelyn Mercer|

The investigation lasted nearly a year.

By the following autumn, federal prosecutors had assembled a case involving financial fraud, conspiracy, obstruction, and crimes connected to Grace Vale's death.

Bennett and Derek faced serious charges.

Several former Northline Freight managers agreed to cooperate.

The recovered records revealed that money had been diverted through false shipping invoices and insurance claims.

Grace had discovered the scheme.

She'd begun gathering evidence.

And when Bennett realized how much she knew, he attempted to stop her.

The warehouse fire had been deliberately set to destroy records.

But Grace was still inside.

Evie had entered the building to bring Lily out.

Then she'd returned for Grace.

Investigators established that Evie had been attacked while trying to help.

She survived.

But her injuries and the false accusations made her disappear from public life.

For six years, she lived under the weight of a crime she hadn't committed.

Now she stood in a courtroom, waiting to tell the truth.

Roman sat beside his attorney.

Lily was at home with a trusted caregiver, protected from the difficult testimony.

Salvatore attended with medical assistance.

He looked older.

Smaller.

And deeply ashamed.

Evie approached the witness stand.

Her hands trembled.

But her voice remained steady.

She described how Grace hired her.

How the two women became friends.

How Grace grew frightened after discovering unusual warehouse transactions.

Then she described the night of the fire.

“The alarm didn't sound.”

The courtroom became silent.

“I smelled smoke near the service corridor. Grace told me to take Lily outside.”

The prosecutor asked what happened next.

Evie swallowed.

“I carried Lily through the loading entrance.”

Her eyes filled.

“She was crying for her mother.”

Roman lowered his head.

Evie continued.

“I gave her to a security officer and went back inside.”

The prosecutor paused.

“Why?”

Evie's voice broke.

“Because Grace was still there.”

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then she described finding Grace near the office.

The smoke.

The heat.

The attempt to help her toward the exit.

And the blow that knocked Evie unconscious.

When asked whether she'd disabled the security system, she shook her head.

“No.”

“Did you set the fire?”

“No.”

“Did you abandon Grace?”

Evie's eyes filled.

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“I tried to save her.”

The courtroom remained silent.

Then investigators presented the recovered records.

Security-system logs.

Financial documents.

Derek's messages.

And Grace's hidden recording.

One by one, the evidence contradicted the story Bennett had spent six years telling.

When Roman testified, he admitted something difficult.

“I believed Evelyn Mercer was responsible for my wife's death.”

The prosecutor asked why.

“Because I trusted the people who told me.”

His voice tightened.

“I didn't ask enough questions.”

He looked toward Evie.

“And I was wrong.”

The courtroom became painfully quiet.

Roman continued.

“Evelyn saved my daughter.”

His eyes filled.

“She risked her life to help Grace.”

For the first time, Evie allowed herself to cry openly.

The criminal proceedings ended with convictions supported by the financial records, witness statements, and forensic evidence.

Bennett and Derek received prison sentences for their respective roles.

Additional defendants were held accountable for the Northline scheme.

And the official record finally acknowledged that Evelyn Mercer had not caused Grace Vale's death.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Evie.

“Ms. Mercer, how does it feel to have your name cleared?”

She stopped.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then she looked toward Roman.

“My name was never the most important thing I lost.”

The reporters fell silent.

“I lost a friend.”

Her voice trembled.

“Grace was kind. Brave. And she loved her daughter more than anything.”

Evie swallowed.

“I wish I'd been able to bring her home.”

Then Roman approached.

He stood beside her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Finally, he took her hand.

“You brought Lily home.”

Evie's eyes filled.

He continued.

“And Grace knew you tried.”

She began crying.

Roman gently embraced her.

The cameras flashed.

But for the first time, neither cared.

Because the truth had finally been spoken.

And the woman Roman once swore he'd never forgive had become the person he trusted most.
