Chapter 13 - THE CLEANSING OF BELLAVITA

|

Forty-eight hours after the bloodshed in the Pilsen catacombs, a strange, miraculous peace settled over the city of Chicago.

The federal authorities, armed with Dr. Vance’s confessions and the financial ledgers recovered from Dario’s penthouses, dismantled his rogue network within twenty-four hours.

Don Falcone officially ratified the transfer of all De Luca holdings to Matteo, naming Elena Rossi De Luca as the recognized sole heir of the family estate.

Yet, on Tuesday evening, there were no celebratory parties at the Gold Coast mansions.

The heavy brass locks of Bellavita were turned from the inside.

The grand dining room was empty of customers, but every crystal chandelier was blazing with warm, golden light.

The tables were stripped of their formal white linens, replaced with checkered cloths and baskets of fresh crusty bread.

In the commercial kitchen, the massive copper stoves roared with blue flames.

Elena stood behind the main line, wearing a clean white chef’s apron over a simple black cotton shirt.

Her hair was tied back with a simple ribbon, and a smudge of fresh flour dusted her left cheek.

Beside her stood Rosa, chopping fresh parsley and lemons with practiced speed.

Luca Ferraro stood by the prep station, laughing as he struggled to peel garlic cloves under the stern supervision of the head chef.

Matteo walked into the kitchen, having removed his suit jacket and rolled his crisp white shirt sleeves up to his elbows.

He didn't look like the dreaded mob boss who had executed traitors two nights ago.

He looked like a man who had finally put down a burden he had carried through hell for twenty-five years.

“Table Twelve is waiting, Chef,” Matteo said with a rare, genuine smile.

Elena wiped her hands on a cloth and looked over at him.

“Are you sure you’re ready for it?” she teased gently.

“The last time you ate my cooking, we had to blow up a bank.”

The kitchen staff erupted into warm, easy laughter.

Elena turned back to the copper pan on the flame.

She added the butter, watching it foam and turn golden brown.

She poured in the dry white wine, letting the steam carry the rich aroma of garlic, lemon, and sea salt into the air.

And then, she reached for the small porcelain jar on the top shelf.

Inside were the dried roots her mother had taught her to harvest and cure—the sacred, restorative herb of the De Luca bloodline.

She added a pinch to the bubbling sauce, watching it dissolve into the broth like gold turning into water.

Never change the recipe.

Elena finally understood what her mother had truly meant.

It wasn't about guarding a secret from the world.

It was about holding onto your identity, your courage, and your truth, no matter how many monsters tried to force you to bend.

She plated the delicate handmade pasta, spooning the glistening sauce over the top, and garnished it with fresh parsley.

She carried the white porcelain plate out into the dining room herself.

Matteo sat at Table Twelve, the very spot where this nightmare had begun five days earlier.

Elena placed the plate before him, setting down a silver fork beside it.

Three tiny scratches were visible beneath the handle: M.D.L.

Matteo picked up the fork, his hand steady and calm.

He took a bite.

He closed his eyes, chewing slowly as the flavors washed over him.

A tear slipped down his weathered cheek, landing on the linen napkin in his lap.

“It tastes like home,” Matteo whispered, looking up at his daughter with eyes full of light.

“It tastes exactly like your mother.”

Elena sat down across from him, reaching across the table to cover his hand with hers.

“It’s our recipe now,” Elena said softly.

And for the first time in her life, she felt completely, beautifully safe.
